Amy Adams Appreciation

By s. Monday, August 20, 2012
Amy Lou Adams
in Vicenza, Veneto, Italy)

Today is 38th {!) birthday of incredibly lovable, very talented and enchantingly cute Amy Adams. She is quite possibly the cutest actress out there (Well, her and Emma Stone). I cannot believe how young she looks - she is 15 years my senior and she probably looks younger than I do.

Amy always holds her own - even in Doubt - where two acting geniuses heavy weights Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman clashed - Amy wasn't overshadowed and managed to be very memorable - instead of using what they had in their disposal - yelling, screaming and being intimidating - Amy used her charming smile, shivering chin and innocent eyes to portray her character and proved that one may use delicate approach and play naive and easily likable people and be just as impressive as charismatic characters. That role brought her much deserved Academy Award nomination. There is not enough love for her performance there, though, and I simply adore it - Frosty the Snowman moment is just incredible as are her horrified eyes and humble and saddened expression when she shares her suspicions about the new priest.

Amy also played Disney's princess turned into real life one in Enchanted singing, dancing and being all around adorable. I rarely enjoy cutesy films like this one but Adams really made it work. There is also her finest acting achievement in Junebug in which she played lovely and charming pregnant girl and her intricate work in The Fighter where she played simple but strong willed woman and frequently stole the show from those more accomplished - as with "I like my life" scene.
Amy on the set of Man of Steel

She is having a really good year - with On the Road, Trouble with the Curve and what appears to be a sure front runner in Oscar race The Master, but the performance I really can't wait for is next year's Man of Steel where Amy will be Lois Lane to delicious Henry Cavill's Superman. So far the title of best romance and chemistry in comic book based movie goes to Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman in Thor, but I have a feeling Amy and Henry may top that. Also - as good as trailer is - I cannot wait to see a glimpse of Amy in the role, so far all we have are pictures from the set.

Another thing I love about her is her fashion sense - year by year she is the queen of the Oscar season with all the beautiful gowns she chooses:
5 favorite performances:

5 fun facts:
  • Her father was in the military and was also an amateur actor
  • She was born in Italy and raised in Castle Rock, Colorado
  •  Raised in a Mormon family of seven children
  • Was one month pregnant with her daughter Aviana Olea Le Gallo when she completed filming on The Fighter.
  • Has a lot of hot sauce in her kitchen. Loves raw onions, garlic and garlic press.

  1. I like Amy a lot! She's so talented, I first saw her in Junebug and immediately I was impressed. She used to perform in a dinner theater near the church I used to attend, in fact before my church got its own building, they used to have its services at that dinner theater, ahah. Not sure if she was still performing there or not. Glad to see Amy's so successful now.

  2. She's 38?! I would've guessed 32 at the most.
She was fantastic in your 5 favorite performances picks, and I loved her work in Catch Me If You Can.
"Well I like Frosty the Snowman!" Great scene. :)

  3. Another great actress and stunning woman. Talk about queen of the Oscar season reminded me of one of the most awkward interviews of her on the Oscar red carpet :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwUOpXnYmIo
The only defence I can think of for the interviewer was she was in awe of Amy's presence!

    1. Those interviewers really look starstruck year by year, I cringe so much when I watch red carpet because they behave like schoolgirls having gigantic crush :)

  6. I've not yet been blown away by Amy Adams. Though, I've only seen her in a handful of films. Thought she was great in The Fighter. Probably my favourite of her roles. Can't believe she's 38!

    1. She was so great in the Fighter, really not usual role for her and she did great. I heard amazing things about her work in both the Master and On the Road, so maybe the time to be blown away is coming! :)

  7. Quite possibly my favorite actress right now (Or Emma Stone. You got that right) No doubt she is extremely talented, anyone who can go from Enchanted to Doubt and The Fighter to Miss Pettigrew has to be. I saw her first in Enchanted and have since everything she did since them and much more. Now it has come to that I have to see everything she is in - even Man of Steel though I generally do not care about Superhero movies(Well, her and Nolan).

    Great Pictures BTW !!

    1. I'm a bit worried about Man of Steel because I didn't like any of Snyder's films and Sucker Punch was just painful to watch. I hope Nolan will make this one into at least good film.

      Thank you!

  8. I love the collages! And wow, I really didn't know she was that "old"! The first time I really noticed her was in Enchanted, I loved her in that one. And then The Fighter was something totally different but she was just as great.

    1. Thanks! Yes, she is amazing - people say she has limited range but those performances really prove she can play very different types of characters.

  9. I agree with your picks for favorite performances, though I haven't seen The Fighter yet. I felt, as you did, that it was wonderful to see her shine in Doubt, working with two very experienced, excellent actors (Hoffman and Streep). I didn't remember that she was in Catch Me If You Can. Of course, I saw that movie ages ago. Amy Adams must've been quite young then.

    1. Oh, definetly see The Fighter - Bale, Leo and Amy were amazing in the film, it was also quite funny at times, not a pitch black drama. Yeah, I forgot she was in it too but then I had quick flashes of her work there, I really need to rewatch the film sometime it was really good.

  10. Nice picks! I love Amy Adams - don't think I've seen a poor performance from her yet. I haven't liked all of the movies she's been in, but she is usually on point.

The Master. I cannot fuckin' wait to see her in The Master.

  11. THIRTY-EIGHT?! WHAT?! I cannot BELIEVE that.

Love her so much too; she's adorable in Enchanted but such a hardass in The Fighter. "Touch me again, I'll rip ya nasty ^*$&ing hair outcha head!" I had to rewind that 3 times.

  12. Your flair never ceases to amaze me. I love the collages. My favorite movies of her would be The Muppets and The Fighter. I know she wasn't amazing in The Muppets, but it was a cute role.

I never knew she was in Catch me if You Can until I re-saw the picture this year. It was quite surprising seeing her that young.

  14. Love Amy Adams in pretty much every movie she shows up in. Always so bubbly and lovely but she did well branching out into more dramatic material as of late. My favorite of hers would be Junebug and Enchanted.

  15. LOVE Amy! Thanks for all the pics! Enchanted and Junebug are my fave of her performances! She's so sweeeeet!

Also is there still a way to follow Cinematic Corner by email or is that option gone?

    1. I deleted that option because I myself don't use it - it just creates chaos in inbox. I may bring it back someday, but that would require writing new codes and I don't even know where I'd place it. I'll think about it, though.

  17. I actually first saw her, and remembered her, in the mockumentary Drop Dead Gorgeous. She played a contestant in a local beauty pageant who was, let's just say, a little dim and not at all shy. When another contestant's outfit gets ruined and someone says she has to go out on stage anyway, Adams' character responds, "Unh uh. You can't perform naked. I checked."
