(55) What if you didn't have to be...dead? + links

By Sati. Friday, November 30, 2012
  • I've been watching Pushing Daisies again, because it's a lovely show and it has Lee Pace in it. I don't think we need a third reason. Hell, even the first reason is pretty irrelevant.
  • I had no time to see any movies this week, because I've been reading books on my dissertation subject. It sucked so much. On the bright side I now have enough information to actually start writing this thing. Though it's December tomorrow and whenever it is close to Christmas I don't feel like doing any school work. It's the time for snow, Christmas decorations and feeling happy. And writing about expert witnesses is not my idea of happy.
  • I will hopefully get to see Liz & Dick this weekend with Lindsey Lohan...playing Elizabeth Taylor. Apparently the movie is so bad that it's hilarious. I also plan to watch The Bourne Legacy, though I heard it's very average.
  • The impossible has happened - the marketing campaign for Pacific Rim, new Idris Elba movie, finally began and it looks like we are finally getting the teaser trailer in two weeks. Can't wait. I really hope Idris will survive in this film. His demise in Prometheus was bad enough for the reason it actually happened but how it happened is currently my number 1 on the most ridiculous scenes of the year list. I still didn't recover from how stupid it was in otherwise great movie.
  • Apparently Bates Motel is set in contemporary times. What a stupid fucking idea. How the hell can you shot a prequel about Norman Bates in contemporary times? In another news we also got a lovely first picture of Rebecca Hall in third Iron Man movie.
  • I've been watching few of old Saturday Night Live episodes and I think Bill Hader's elderly reporter who hits people with microphone is my favorite character.
  • I still didn't get a chance to see new Homeland or Boardwalk Empire. No clue what is happening there and if Carrie is still washing down pills with white wine.
  • But no matter what, I still wait eagerly every week for new American Horror Story. I'll try to review the last two episodes tomorrow. The Wednesday's episode entitled Dark Cousin was terrific - Frances Conroy's Angel of Death is one of the best additions to season 2 so far. I really can't wait for next week's episode where Ian McShane will wipe the floor with everyone on the show as a murderous Santa.
  • This week I finally got interested in two films I had no interest in seeing - Les Miserables and Lincoln. First one caught my eye, or rather ear, when I heard Hathaway singing I Dreamed a Dream. That picture below is from Les Mis premiere and it looks like Anne is thinking of growing her hair long. No! She looks so cute with short hair! As for Lincoln, Lee Pace is in it. That's it.
  • Jean Dujardin is officially a silver fox now. So hot. Can't wait for the Wolf of Wall Street.
  • New Parks and Recreation was weak, The Big Bang Theory was disappointing as the humour was very vulgar this episode and it's not something they usually do. They only do it when they are desperate.
  •  It is shaping up to be pretty disappointing Oscar season - while the reviews for Zero Dark Thirty are favorable, there are no raves and apparently Jessica Chastain doesn't have those amazing, powerful moments that make the performance memorable. Hitchcock is getting slammed left and right and the one film that I have no interest in seeing - and that won't change - Life of Pi - is actually getting good reviews.
  • Gustav wore a new coat with a hood this week as it was raining all the time which meant two things - me falling in the mud as I slip when Gustav starts running towards other dogs and Gustav being pissed off about the rain and refusing to go for a walk. It's not easy carrying a Yorkie in one hand and holding umbrella in the other. The second pic is his version of Take Shelter when the vacuum is on - he runs to the furthest place in the room.

      1. Oh, it's a wonderful show, very unique. He was also great in a movie Soldier's Girl, but it's only now that his career is blossoming.

I didn't think the lineup of movies this year was as disappointing as last year. That being said, the Academy ignored a lot of good movies and performances last year (Shame, Drive, Beginners). There's definitely been months of boring movies in 2012, but the few great ones I have seen were very memorable.

There is just nothing I'm truly anticipating this year, like 2 years ago with Black Swan and last year with Shame.

    4. Hope you get to see movies again soon, when your work load is less!
I finally saw season 1 of The Wire, and though I didn't care for all the f-words, it was entertaining, good story, and memorable characters.

Glad you liked the Wire, yeah it's pretty heavy on swearing ^^ But the show only gets better.

I just saw the new Les Miserables trailer and I liked it, but call me crazy, I am not very fond of the fact that there will be singing in this, with the exception of the seemingly perfect part of Anne Hathaway!

Yeah, I don't really like musicals so singing usually bugs me, but I'm seeing this either way for Anne, I'm sure she will do great.

    6. The Bates Motel news is probably the biggest bummer of the week. I simply do not see that working. At all. (sigh) Oh well.

Thanks for the link! Also, Gustav looks like a pimp in his little get-up. I dig it.

    7. Thank you for the link love and happy Friday dearest! Ahah, love Daniel's wicked sense of humor. He's got such a swagger!

Ooooh Lee Pace! [swoon] He's so gorgeous isn't he? Why oh why isn't he doing every single movie yet ;) Hopefully soon after The Hobbit comes out. I should watch Pushing Daisies episodes just for him, plus I quite like Anna Friel.

Bourne Legacy is average to ho-hum, Sati. Might be more fun just playing with your cutie patootie Gustav there.

He is <3 Pushing Daisies is adorable and he is a true Prince Charming in that ^^

He sleeps a lot, so I use that time to watch films :)

    8. Lee Pace <3 Have you seen The Fall? He is amazing in that movie.

I love how Anne Hathaway looked at that Tokyo premiere thing. It is at the perfect length now. Mind you, I do miss her long hair.

      Oh, and Rebecca Hall <3

      Thanks for the link!

    9. Is the photo of the character with wings from American Horror Story? Gosh, it looks more interesting by the day. I haven't really got enough time for tv shows however. Haven't even seen a single episode of Big Bang this season, despite me be a huge fan.

      ReplyDelete

      1. Yes, it's Frances Conroy's angel. The wings were so cool! The Big Bang Theory was pretty nice this season apart from the latest episode.

    10. Dear friend, I always appreciate the shout out you throw my way on your excellent blog. You're the best. That review was silly, but I'm glad you liked it.

Two things: 1) I don't know what the Hell you're talking about with this whole 'Bates Motel' madness (uh...I'm rather f--king clueless, to put it mildly), but if what you say is true, I may actually kill myself in protest. That sounds like the worst idea in an industry that routinely one ups itself with terrible decisions. Ugh.

And excellent call on Hader's reporter guy. Hysterical. I'm a sucker for his Stefon character as well. I die when he and Myers can't keep their shit together.

      1. You're welcome! LOVE your writing and your reviews!

Bates Motel is the new series scheduled to debut in January, with Vera Farmiga as the mother and Freddie Highmore (sigh) as Norman. It looked average so far but now that the photo of Norman with iphone was released shit hit the fan :) I really don't think that mess is worthy of killing yourself in the protest, though I agree it's just the worst idea to set it in modern times.

That bit is so funny! Stefon is hilarious as well, I always crack up when Meyers can't keep a straight face.

      2. Awesome. Thanks again.

As for the Motel thing, yeah, maybe suicide is overdoing it, but Psycho is in my top 5 of all time. It's untouchable. Oh well, another show I'll never watch.

I'm afraid that Hader is so good, he must be leaving soon.

      3. I'm gonna check it out because somehow they got Vera Farmiga and I love her, so it means I will see anything she is in, including this crap :/

I really hope he stays on SNL for a long time, I love him in that, in his movies...not so much.

    11. The Bates Motel thing is going to be in set in contemporary times?

      BOO!!!!!!!

Daniel Craig is funny. I hope he gets to be a bit funny w/ Ben Whishaw in the next Bond movie just to maintain that Bond/Q banter.

Anne does look cute with the short hair.

      1. Yeah, it's just the most horrible idea.

I loved Q and Bond in Skyfall, hope they will keep it up!

    13. Gustav remains one of the most adorable puppy dogs ever.
Aw, why no interest in Life of Pi? Actually that's a silly question. I don't have a great deal of interest in Zero Dark Thirty. It's just taste, isn't it?
I cern't wert to see Lee Pace in der Herrrbit! Wooo, elf!!!

I guess so, I'm just not a fan of movies that rely on visual side. It actually hurts my eyes to see them on the big screen :)

I'm sure he will be awesome, but I'm not sure if he will appear in the first film, now that they divided it into 3 parts :(

    14. Daniel Craig is just awesome. Agreed about the Bates Hotel being set in contemporary times, its such a stupid idea.
I still wanna see Hitchcock, I'm still predicting Mirren anyway. As for Life of Pi, its my most anticipated film of the year, the book is just outstanding.

PS - Your dog is adorable!
PPS - Liz & Dick has some incredible one-liners.

Yay! Glad you want to see Les Miserables now. I love what little I've heard of Hathaway's version of that song.

Really? I keep reading that Chastain might actually win Best Actress for Zero Dark Thirty. Of course, she could still win without giving a memorable performance.

Her singing voice is so lovely, I'd be surprised if she won't win Oscar.

Oh, Chastain and Lawrence are front runners for sure, but I'm disappointed that her character is apparantly not as awesome as it could have been, at least from what I read.

    20. Aww, look at Gustav! Bless. We've occasionally had to put our dog in little dog booties to protect her skin on her feet - she's got sensitive paws. I should have done a video of her first walk in shoes. Hilarious!

I need to do a rewatch of Pushing Daisies. Looking forward to seeing Lee Pace in something that isn't sucky. Looking at you Twilight and that animated dog film thing.

American Horror Story is so fucked up, I LOVE it. Frances Conroy was brills! Can't believe we're basically halfway through the season.

      1. Oh, I'd love to buy booties for Gustav, but I can't find any in pet stores. The alternative is putting cream on his paws whenever we walk him and it's really messy.

Yeah, he has been in some bad movies...but he is super hot in Twilight :) Plus he looks amazing in Lincoln and I read the film is pretty good.

I can't believe it too! It's such an addictive show, good thing it's ending in January and then it's only 2 more months to new Game of Thrones :)
