(58) The world isn't ending today + links

By Sati. Friday, December 21, 2012
  • So the world is supposed to end today. Few months before I have to finish my dissertation and take the bar exam? Yeah, right. I'm not that lucky.
  • As I've been watching a lot of Lee Pace's films lately I remembered this week that ruth from flixchatter said something about him being dreamy in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. So I thought "OK, let's check it out". Good God almighty. Some films really should come with a warning "this perfection may kill you". Lee plays one of Amy Adams's character's suitors. He is just amazing - he loves her and wants to marry her. He actually went to jail in the movie because he thought the engagement ring he got her wasn't worthy of her so he tried to steal one form The Tower of London! He is wearing suits all the time in the movie, he actually grabs her and sits her on the piano at one point and then he played the piano and sang:
  • The film was really charming and Adams and Frances McDormand had wonderful chemistry together. It's actually the perfect movie for Christmas - really funny, adorable and it has lovely double-happy ending.
  • I've been catching up with talk shows this week. Nick Offerman was just hilarious on Conan. One of the recent guests was also Armie Hammer who promoted...the trailer for The Lone Ranger. Good lord it looks terrible, like a cross between Jonah Hex and Dark Shadows. But it has Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter in it, the latter looking especially ravishing.
  •  I also saw Hugh Jackman on Leno and Anne Hathaway on bunch of talk shows. I found it a little funny that both of them keep talking about how much pain they had to endure while doing Les Miserables. It's like "who lost more weight?" competition. I was so shocked to hear Anne lost 25 pounds. That's insane, she was so thin to begin with! Jackman apparently didn't drink any liquids for 36 hours one time during shooting to look gaunt. Insanity.
  • I saw two more films this week apart from Miss Pettigrew. - The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Cloud Atlas. Really liked Perks and already reviewed it but Cloud Atlas....that was just terrible. I thought I was going to fall asleep during this one. It was the most boring movie I've seen since The Tree of Life. There were some good things in it, but overall I really can't blame Time magazine for choosing it as the worst movie of 2012. I wrote the review, haven't published it yet. Christmas time is a time for happy things on the blog.
  • I also tried to watch Pitch Perfect, but couldn't get in to it. Anna Kendrick really irritates me.
  • I discovered Bryan Fuller who made Pushing Daisies made one more show with Lee - Wonderfalls. Yep, I've been watching it this week too.
  • This weekend I plan on watching Total Recall and Paranorman.  I could go to the cinema to finally see The Master and Seven Psychopaths, but we're hosting Christmas Eve in my house so I have to clean my lair.
  • New poster for Oz - the Great and Powerful was released this week. We can see the iconic Wicked Witch of the West on it. While Disney is trying hard to cover up who plays her, it's painfully obvious it's Mila Kunis who accidentally revealed who she was playing on more than one occasion.
  • Gustav's Christmas scarf is ready! All he needs now is Santa hat.
  • On Sunday there will be a post that will be a part of Movie Jail relay race where I'll be defending one actor and prosecuting one director I loathe, I think you can guess right now who this will be. And on Monday a very special Christmas post!

    2. I didn't know you were this close to finishing law school. Congratulations on being so close to the finish line.

Thanks for the link. I'm hardly brave ... I picked what promised to be the mildest von Trier film. I don't think I could get drunk enough to sit through Antichrist. :-P

      1. Yeah, only few more months and then the bar exam is in October. It's such a nightmare.

You're welcome! There is not enough alcohol in the world to make that one bearable :)

    3. I haven't watch anything lately. Have been distracted lately and all. I really want to see Perks and perhaps watch anything not so serious like Pitch Perfect. Sorry for not being around. But I am pretty sure what's my favorite movie of the year. Do you have any now?

      1. Perks is great, I think you'll like it. My favorites of the year so far are TDKR, Killer Joe and Looper but I haven't seen any of Golden Globe nominated dramas except for Argo.

I finally figured out that I should subscribe by email so that I'll remember to stop by more often, your blog is one of the best there is, hands down, so maybe now I'll be a little less infrequent about paying my respects :D

Oh yeah, and what I came by to say was... the WORLD isn't gonna end today, but you know what is? TV shows SAYING that the world is gonna end today. And that SUCKS. :D I've been watching a TON of that shit, its great! :D

      It's over now though :(

I don't know what's he doing...it's a real shame watching him waste his talent on movies like this one.

The more I hear how much people loathe Cloud Atlas, the more I think I was on something that night. Oh well, still interested in your wrath.

      Should be interesting!
