(66) The flood on the corner + links

By Sati. Friday, February 15, 2013
  • Lana Del Rey released new music video - just in time for Valentine's Day - for the song Burning Desire. I really hope we will get videos for Cola and American which are my two favorite songs from her new album.
  • I posted the link to my 48 hidden images in Black Swan on reddit and I got....more than 400,000 hits in one day. That's twice more than I got over a year here. Insane. The link is actually still generating hits. I just...I have no words.
  • My weekend was shit even with that, as Gustav ate something off the ground again and had to stay at dog hospital for 2 days. It was terrible. I couldn't sleep. I was so worried, not just for his health but also that he was scared and alone there. I think I called the vet every 4 hours. Apparently Gustav didn't have such a bad time - he played with everyone there, but he bit few people too and no wonder - he had this thing stuck in his paw and they hooked IV to it. When we picked him up on Monday it was insane, he was so happy to see us. Well, he was mostly happy to see my mother because she is the one who feeds him so he jumped on her and as I took him outside (since he was yapping away so loud it was crazy) he actually started to jump at the door and we had to go back in. He couldn't calm himself down for 15 minutes. Now he is all right though he is on the diet he has to stay on for a week. He is pissed off at all of us for not feeding him us much as he would want.
  • I just hate it whenever I have to deal with the doctors. I myself don't go to the doctors. If I am dying or something, I do not want to know. I only go to doctors if I have insanely high fever or if it's something with my tooth since it won't kill you and the longer you wait, the worse it gets. Fortunately I am almost never sick and I brush my teeth 5 times a day (I hate dentists). But when it comes to my dog that is my responsibility I bring him to the vet all the time. And it's a good thing that we did this time though honestly whenever I'm there I'm close to passing out from worry. Also Gustav has a habit of getting sick on Saturday night/Sunday. Then there is only one place in the city that is opened and it's crazy expensive. Don't get me wrong, I'd spent all my money on this dog but honestly for the cost of his stay over two days there I would expect him to get a spa treatment and get freaking mojitos or something and I don't think that happened.
  • Look at those new scenes from Luther 3 - let me write this again - ALICE IS BACK!
  •  Speaking of Idris - Harvey Weinstien took interest in that Mandela movie with him. Oh God please give this man an Oscar. That would be so great. Though I have to say Weinstein is losing his touch a little. Silver Linings Playbook is getting screwed over left and right, Tarantino didn't get best director nomination and don't get me started on DiCaprio again.
  • Saoirse Ronan joined Ryan Gosling's To Catch a Monster. Let's hope it will be good.
  • Dominic West and Helena Bonham Carter will star as Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in a 90-minute film that will air on BBC4. This is fantastic.
  • Christoph Waltz is hosting SNL this weekend. Let's hope the writers finally try and create something good because lately the show was close to unwatchable.
  • Have you guys seen Graham Norton show with Fassbender and Mark Walhberg? Walhberg was completely drunk and Fassy was in a terrible position having have to explain stuff over and over again. It was hilarious.BTW Fassy is just adorable.
  • I saw the trailer for Oblivion which actually looks pretty good. I'll definitely see it for underrated Andrea Riseborough and M83 score.
  • I'm working on two gigantic posts at the same time, part 1 of one of them will be published tomorrow. Hopefully once I post it, it will encourage you to watch that specific TV series the post will be about.
  • Has anyone seen The Practice or Boston Legal? Are these worth seeing?
  • After seeing BAFTA ceremony I'm - again - in love with George Clooney. Again or still. I'm not sure. every Oscar season it's the same thing. I really need to watch Michael Clayton again.
  • I finally managed to watch last week's Parks and Recreation. Though I still find Anne/Leslie related plots to be boring the guys brought the laughs - they got food poisoning and it was completely hilarious. Unfortunately, this week's episode was a snoozefest.
  •  Modern family was very funny though, especially Claire and Phil. Seeing how rapidly the quality of Parks and Rec and The Big Bang Theory is dropping, it's probably the funniest show on TV right now.
  • The Oscars are next Sunday! I'm actually not excited about who will win as 1. there are too many locks for win this year 2. neither of my top 3 movies in 2012 got anything so fuck the Academy 3. MacFarlane or whatever you spell his name is hosting and I can't stand him. But oh my God, Jean Dujardin will be there. And I can't wait to see what Amy Adams is going to wear - she always has the best dresses. I'm kinda worried about all of those tributes - musical tribute, James Bond tribute...this is why Oscars are so boring. The BAFTA and Golden Globes ceremonies are at least relatively short, here there is all this dull hoopla happening and add to that all those commercial breaks.
  • I was going to see Warm Bodies and ParaNorman this week but of course I didn't find the time to do so, as usual. Hopefully I'll finally get to see at least one film this weekend.
  • So the crap meteorites are falling from the sky and the Pope is resigning. Maybe Mayans were wrong about the 2 in the end of 2012 and it's really 2013? Let me just tell you - if the world comes to an end after I finished law school and passed the bar which may happen this year once I get to hell I'll kick some serious ass there.

    4. Woah, 400,000 hits! That's reddit for ya, congratulations!! :D
Poor Gustav :( It's horrible when a pet is in pain. We had to let our puppy dog go last year (well, she was 12 so not reeeaally a puppy) but yeah, anytime they're in pain, it's awful.
I can't wait to see Warm Bodies, and I think you'll like ParaNorman :)

    8. It sounds like Gustav's vet stay was rougher on you than it was on him. :) I'm glad he's on the mend.

I was kinda bored by this week's Parks and Rec, other than for Ron's time on TV show I didn't laugh much.

      1. I didn't think Walhberg was such a loose canon, I thought he was a regular dude and I'm quite shocked. Actors being drunk on TV show is something that I don't see that often :)

    13. I never watched Boston Legal, but I did watch The Practice for a few years. Actually, Boston Legal was really a continuation of The Practice after they changed that show. I didn't care for the direction it was taking and stopped watching it. Knowing Boston Legal was a continuation I didn't watch that.

In regards to The Practice, it is the same as all other David E. Kelley shows in one respect - the first season or two are the absolute best. It then seems like Kelley starts to lose interest and he moves on to the next thing he is going to create.

A show of his I would highly recommend is the one that started it all - Picket Fences. It didn't concentrate on any one genre. The central family (blended family stories) consisted of a father who was a sheriff (crime/mystery stories), a second wife who was a doctor (medical stories), teen daughter from first marriage (teen stories), and two sons from this marriage (entering puberty stories and little kid stories). There were two deputies, male and female, that had a subdued "will they or won't they" storyline. There was a cranky judge and a brilliant defense attorney who kept people off guard by sometimes acting foolish (legal stories). There was a coroner (CSI stories). There were various other quirky characters (think a more realistic Twin Peaks). The Mayor of the town got involved sometimes (political stories). Don Cheadle joined the cast the second season as a district attorney, so this allowed equal time for prosecuting criminals, not just the defense side seen in the first season.

It had good humor in it, without being either a comedy or a parody like Ally McBeal. It also had some fantastic drama and ethical questions put forth. And the good guys didn't always triumph, either.

Every single show Kelley has done since has been derivative of this one, focusing on a single genre from it. One other thing that makes this show special is that Kelley literally wrote every single episode the first season, in addition to running the show. Unfortunately, this established the wandering attention problem and each subsequent season was a little bit of a step down from the prior one. Seasons 2 and 3 are also definitely worth seeing, though.

Only the first season has been released on DVD in the U.S., but you may be able to find it, and subsequent seasons, online. (The same can be said for The Practice on DVD, by the way.)

      1. I heard James Spader is in both and I really liked him, he managed to be awesome in The Office season 8 and that season was a nightmare - if it wasn't for him I wouldn't even watch that. So I'll probably give BL a shot :)

I plan to see PF after The Practice so I'll definitely see it in the future, I like Kelley style but yeah, the longer the shows last the more quality they lose.

The Practice had a cross over episode in Ally McBeal so I'll probably start with that show, 8 seasons is a lot but hopefully it will fill my time while I wait for new Game of Thrones :)

    14. Wow 400.000 pageviews, that's so so big. Congrats! I've never tried Reddit before. Perhaps I should.

I'm not too excited with the Oscar's this year. I don't know if it's because I have plenty movies to catch up or because I don't like the selections.

Thanks for the link, as usual :) Have a great weekend, Sati

    15. Wow, two link loves from you, thank you dear Sati! 400K hits on Reddit, WOW!! Congrats on getting through, but that is a stupendous post so I'm glad a lot of people get to see your amazing work. Reddit is great when it actually works. I've been trying to submit a few people's posts and my Valentine post but it kept blocking me :(

Oh my, sorry to hear about Gustav. Boy I hope he's doing better, I'd be worried sick too. Good thing he got along w/ everyone at the vet, ahah.

Thanks again Sati, hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Yeah Reddit is lovely when it works but other than those instances it's kinda useless :) I think there is some sort of limit to how often you can submit links, I usually just submit one a day so I'm not sure what the limit is actually.

He's better now and he is getting his normal food starting today so he is pretty happy :P

    16. Congratulations on the views! Very impressive indeed, makes me want to start using reddit, lol.

Also, Soooooo frigging excited about Alice coming back in season 3 of Luther, I was sad to see that she wasn't featured as heavily in season 2 but hopefully she'll be around for more than a cameo appearance this time

    17. Wow, that is AWESOME about Reddit! I bet you could get some good traffic off your Visual Parallels posts, too. Your blog is prime for these major traffic spikes.

I caught part of SNL this weekend. Waltz was as charming as ever, but most of the skits were pretty meh. Not good enough for me to finish the episode anyway...

    19. I think I actually read this a minute after you posted it, but I friggin' hate commenting from my phone. I always end up sounding more illiterate than usual.

Anyway...thanks as always for the link. Yet another silly review, but I really hated that damn movie. Next time, I'll listen. I promise.

Though I think you've made up your mind, The Practice is the way to go. Damn that was a good show (though I blindly love anything set in Boston). Boston Legal was fun for a minute, but not as dramatic as The Practice.

Good luck with all that Hell-based ass-kicking! Hopefully I won't get caught in the crossfire.

      1. On the other hand watching something decent after Trouble with the Curve was probably even more rewarding than if you never seen it :)

For example, for me seeing Amy Adams in The Master was awesome, even if her character was a bit wasted in the film because comparing to TwtC Mickey that was at least a fascinating and unique person for her to play.

I'll probably start The Practice soon, I'm almost done catching up with Elementary. Though I should probably finally see a movie, there is nothing I can write review for because I already have 3 in drafts and no recent films to write about. That's just wrong :)

I'm pretty sure the majority of teachers go to Heaven because they had to endure Hell on Earth :)
