The 71st Annual Golden Globe Nominations

By s. Thursday, December 12, 2013 , ,
Today's Golden Globes nominations were shocking, surprising and above all - they chose people who are hot right now and they really want them to appear on that red carper (Kate Winslet, who I'm told just had a baby, I'm mostly talking about you). There were surprises - Rush nominated for Best Drama, snubs - Oprah Winfrey shockingly absent, sources of joy for many - Greta Gerwig nominated for Frances Ha and potential game changers - Idris Elba nominated for Long Walk to Freedom.

There was a lot of American Hustle love - with all four actors being nominated. I still think only Lawrence will get Oscar nomination, though. The Wolf of Wall Street, Philomena and 12 Years a Slave scored big.

Last year my cute helper was Bonnie from Seven Psychopaths. This year it's Baxter from Anchorman 2.
Leo Dicaprio dancing in Wolf of Wall Street. And probably right now.

12 Years a Slave
Best Motion Picture - Drama
"12 Years A Slave"
"Captain Phillips"
"Gravity"
"Philomena"
"Rush"

Thoughts: These are quite unexpected - Philomena and Rush are films that are not considered front runners. Rush is definitely not scoring BP nod at the Oscars but who knows about Philomena? I'm hoping Gravity will be the winner here.

Best Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical
"American Hustle"
"Her"
"Inside Llewyn Davis"
"Nebraska"
"The Wolf Of Wall Street"

Thoughts: With American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street being comedies, no wonder the funniest movie of the year - This is the End - didn't get in. This one is going to be interesting - it's seems to be between Wolf and Hustle, but Her may get in and win this one.

American Hustle
Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron - "Gravity"
Paul Greengrass - "Captain Phillips"
Steve McQueen - "12 Years A Slave"
Alexander Payne - "Nebraska"
David O Russell - "American Hustle"

Thoughts:  No big shocks here. Hopefully Cuaron wins it.

Best Actress - Drama
Cate Blanchett - "Blue Jasmine"
Sandra Bullock - "Gravity
Judi Dench - "Philomena"
Emma Thompson - "Saving Mr Banks"
Kate Winslet - "Labor Day"

Thoughts: Blue Jasmine is drama now? Boy, they will do anything to get Winslet there. She wasn't in the race for a while now. Blanchett is winning with ease.

Best Actor - Drama
Chiwetel Ejiofor - "12 Years A Slave"
Idris Elba - "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom"
Tom Hanks - "Captain Phillips"
Matthew McConaughey - "Dallas Buyers Club"
Robert Redford - "All Is Lost"

Thoughts:  Hopefully this will boost Elba to Oscars. Probably not, but hey, a girl can dream. It's so nice to see McConaughey nominated. Eijofor is most likely winning here.

Frances Ha
Best Actress - Comedy
Amy Adams - "American Hustle"
Julie Delpy - "Before Midnight"
Greta Gerwig - "Frances Ha"
Julia Louis-Dreyfus - "Enough Said"
Meryl Streep - "August: Osage County"

Thoughts: Greta Gerwig nomination has met a bigger joy on Internet than when Emma Stone got in for Easy A. It's a well earned nomination, even if I didn't love the movie. I'm betting on Adams here. They obviously loved Hustle.

Best Actor - Comedy/Musical
Christian Bale - "American Hustle"
Bruce Dern - "Nebraska"
Leonardo DiCaprio - "The Wolf Of Wall Street"
Oscar Isaac - "Inside Llewyn Davis"
Joaquin Phoenix - "Her"

Thoughts: Leo gotta love the Globes. At least they are not ignoring him. Who knows maybe he will finally be nominated for Oscar after all these years? Another interesting category, but I'd bet on Phoenix.

Blue Jasmine
Best Supporting Actress
Sally Hawkins - "Blue Jasmine"
Jennifer Lawrence - "American Hustle"
Lupita N'yongo - "12 Years A Slave"
Julia Roberts - "August: Osage County"
June Squibb - "Nebraska"

Thoughts: I haven't even seen the film yet but I'm very happy for Sally Hawkins. Globes are always happy awards for her, unlike the Oscars. Oprah may try to kill her, though. N'yongo is winning here.

Best Supporting Actor
Barkhad Abdi - "Captain Phillips"
Daniel Bruhl - "Rush"
Bradley Cooper - "American Hustle"
Michael Fassbender - "12 Years A Slave"
Jared Leto - "Dallas Buyers Club"

Thoughts: Bruhl popping up everywhere is fascinating. It's not the role people were screaming about but damn, it looks like it will silently, patiently make its way to the actual Oscar nominations. Leto is winning. Strongest front runner right after Blanchett.

Rush
Best Screenplay
Spike Jonze - "Her"
Bob Nelson - "Nebraska"
Jeff Pope & Steve Coogan - "Philomena"
John Ridley - "12 Years A Slave"
Eric Warren Singer & David O Russell - "American Hustle"

Thoughts: It pisses me off to no end that 12 Years of Slave's screenplay, easily the weakest part of the movie, is going to win everything this Oscar season.

Best Foreign Film
"Blue Is The Warmest Color"
"The Great Beauty"
"The Hunt"
"The Past"
"The Wind Rises"

Thoughts: The Hunt being nominated makes me so happy. I was sure it will easily win, but now Blue is the Warmest Color appears to be a front runner. To be honest given it's the Globes I'm shocked it's the movie's only nomination.

Blue is the Warmest Color
Best Animated Feature
"The Croods"
"Despicable Me 2"
"Frozen"

Thoughts: I'm not watching animated films but considering Frozen has been praised as the first Disney classic for the new generation it's pretty safe bet that it will win.

Best Original Score - Motion Picture
Alex Ebert - "All Is Lost
Alex Heffes - "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom"
Steven Price - "Gravity"
John Williams - "The Book Thief"
Hans Zimmer - "12 Years A Slave"

Thoughts: Fingers crossed for Gravity. Why is Zimmer getting nominated for  3-4 tracks? Even fucking Only God Forgives had a better score. MUCH better score.

Best Original Song - Motion Picture
"Atlas" - Coldplay - "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
"Let It Go - Idina Menzel - "Frozen"
"Ordinary Love" - U2 - "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom"
"Please Mr. Kennedy" - Justin Timberlake & co - "Inside Llewyn Davis"
"Sweeter Than Fiction" - Taylor Swift - "One Chance"

Thoughts: There was one thing that made The Great Gatsby bearable - Lana Del Rey's Young and Beautiful. And it's not fucking nominated?!

Best TV Series - Comedy/Musical
"Big Bang Theory"
"Brooklyn Nine Nine"
"Girls"
"Modern Family"
"Parks & Recreation"

Thoughts: I'm seriously laughing my ass off at all those nominations for Brooklyn 99. Andy Samberg was getting so much shit over this show during Franco's roast and look at it now - it's nominated, he's nominated, Franco and the boys have nothing. He's gotta be so happy now. Also - why is the feces called Girls nominated again?

Best Miniseries Or Motion Picture Made For Television
"American Horror Story: Coven"
"Behind The Candelabra"
"Dancing On The Edge
"Top Of The Lake"
"The White Queen"

Thoughts: Obviously Candelabra is winning. Thank God for Coven nomination.

Best TV Drama
"Breaking Bad"
"Downton Abbey"
"The Good Wife"
"House Of Cards"
"Masters Of Sex"

Thoughts: WHERE IS GAME OF THRONES? WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!

Best Actress - Drama TV Series
Julianna Marguiles - "The Good Wife"
Tatiana Maslany - "Orphan Black"
Taylor Schilling - "Orange Is The New Black"
Kerry Washington - "Scandal"
Robin Wright - "House Of Cards"

Thoughts: Schilling and Maslany nominations are the equivalent of Gerwig nomination - so much joy everywhere.

Best Actor - TV Drama
Bryan Cranston - "Breaking Bad"
Liev Schreiber - "Ray Donovan"
Michael Sheen - "Masters Of Sex"
Kevin Spacey - "House Of Cards"
James Spader - "The Blacklist"

Thoughts: As a huge Michael Sheen fan, I'm one happy bunny right now.

Best Actress - MIniseries
Helena Bonham-Carter - "Burton & Taylor"
Rebecca Ferguson - "The White Queen"
Jessica Lange - "American Horror Story: Coven"
Helen Mirren - "Phil Spector"
Elisabeth Moss - "Top Of The Lake"

Thoughts: Lange is in. Where the hell are Paulson, Bates and Bassett?

Best Actor - Miniseries
Matt Damon - "Behind The Candelabra"
Michael Douglas - "Behind The Candelabra"
Chiwetel Ejiofor - "Dancing On The Edge"
Idris Elba - "Luther"
Al Pacino - "Phil Spector"

Thoughts: Even though Douglas is winning, Idris is a double nominee. But every time he is nominated for Luther, it only reminds me Ruth Wilson is not.

Best Actress - Comedy TV Series
Zooey Deschanel - "New Girl"
Lena Dunham - "Girls"
Edie Falco - "Nurse Jackie"
Julia Louis-Dreyfus - "Veep"
Amy Poehler - "Parks & Recreation"

Thoughts: Lovely group except for one - why is the feces called Lena Dunham here again?

Best Actor - Comedy TV Series
Jason Bateman - "Arrested Development"
Don Cheadle - "House Of Lies"
Michael J Fox - "The Michael J Fox Show"
Jim Parsons - "The Big Bang Theory"
Andy Samberg - "Brooklyn Nine Nine"

Thoughts: As I said - Samberg is laughing his ass off.

Best Supporting Actor - TV
Josh Charles - "The Good Wife"
Rob Lowe - "Behind The Candelabra"
Aaron Paul - "Breaking Bad"
Corey Stoll - "House Of Cards"
Jon Voight - "Ray Donovan"

Thoughts: So happy for Rob Lowe. Months after I saw the movie, his work there is the most memorable part of the film for me.

Best Supporting Actress - TV
Jacqueline Bisset - "Dancing On The Edge"
Janet McTeer - "The White Queen"
Hayden Panetierre - "Nashville"
Monica Potter - "Parenthood"
Sofia Vergara - "Modern Family"

Thoughts: I'm not seeing Michelle Fairley. That's it. I'm sending dog shit there.

The winners will be announced on January 12th. The ceremony will once again be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

  1. I'm pretty disappointed that there was zero love for Fruitvale Station or This is the End....come on...you and I both agree that that movie was hilarious and GOOD! Haters to the left. And no Lana or even Florence???? That aint right...

    1. Franco gotta be pissed off. There was so much buzz for him this year and he has nothing :/ I'm sad about Hill too, he is a great guy it would be nice to see him nominated for anything.

  2. Awesome writeup Sati. I agree to almost every your emotions seeing the nominees. I could not believe my eyes when I did not find Game of Thrones and Homeland in drama category. Also Clair Danes, who gives one of the finest female performances this year, can not be outside this top five.

It was quite surprising that they snubbed August: Osage County. But I think that Her has quite good chances. It wins each writing nomination and most like will do the same on Golden Globes. As for Lana Del Ray, I considered "Young and Beautiful" to be as shoo-in as "Skyfall" was last year. However, I think Coldplay wins this time for "Atlas" (also, everybody loves the Hunger Games")

    1. Thank you! I think Homeland received a lot of criticism this season, so this may be a reason for that. I haven't seen the show since season 2.

Yeah, they love Coldplay. This is actually not a bad song, but Lana should be nominated above the,

  3. Monica Potter for Parenthood? Okay, I watched that show for a while until it got a bit boring and Potter's character was my least favorite throughout the entire series and continues to be the most awful character. Yes, she survived cancer, yes she is now pursuing a career in politics, but in terms of acting, I see much better people in Parenthood than Potter. And all the GOT ladies have more depth as well so.. uhm, it makes no sense! Other than that, I'm so behind with movies that are running for awards this season that I can't really comment but American Hustle looks gooood.

    1. I have no idea what Parenthood even is :) The TV categories are quite odd, though.

  4. LOL Your graphics are the best. The TV Drama category blew me away. No Thrones, Homeland or Mad Men? Actually, I only care about Thrones but that was still surprising. I can see Her being a big winner here, that movie is getting some insane praise. Here's hoping Lana will get in on the Oscar race. The Globes songs and the Oscar ones never match up.

    1. Yeah I'm really hoping Lana will be there during Oscars, she has many better songs but I'd love to see her on stage. HER is getting insane praise indeed, I cannot wait to see this movie.

  5. Awesome post! I'm still working on my thoughts for tomorrow, but first thing I thought of when I saw Idris' double noms was you :D How cool is that? I'm rooting for him to win both even though I really like Chiwetel, too.

  6. I'm going to admit that I'm not a fan of Lana Del Rey though I do like that song "Beautiful". Why that got snubbed in favor of fucking Coldplay, a shit song from U2, and most of all, fucking Taylor Swift. I fucking hate that bitch.

    1. Swift will probably get mocked by Poehler and Fey again, so at least that's something :)

    2. Especially for the fact that it's fun to watch her lose and show her true side as a real bitch. I really think for every guy that is going to go out with her, they should have a lawyer present so that they can royalties in case she writes a song about that guy.

    3. Haha, that's a great idea!

She does have a bitchy face I'm sad for those poor guys.

  8. I was asking myself the same question: where the f*ck is Lana's Golden Globe nomination for "Young and Beautiful"? It is one of the greatest movie songs and it's not even nominated? Come on! I thought she's going to get an Oscar for it but right now I think it is not going to happen. I'm beyond sad! That stupid song by Adele from James Bond movie got all the awards it could but it was not near as great as Lana's song. What the hell?!
    Someone give Lana Oscar!

And not even a single nomination for Game of Thrones? Ridiculous!

    1. I know I felt like someone punched me in the face when they snubbed Lana and GoT. Hopefully the Academy will nominate her, it would be awesome if she sang the song on stage.

  10. As always, great list Sati! I think we have similar tastes. Why the heck didn't they nominate 'Game of Thrones!' Seriously, 'The Good Wife' over 'Game of Thrones?' Are they kidding? The other nominees I could understand, but 'The Good Wife' somehow warranted a nod and 'Game of Thrones' didn't? Fiddlesticks!

As for the other picks, I agree w/ most of them, except your screenplay section. '12 Years A Slave' was a great movie and a movie that really hasn't been seen before (particularly from that perspective). 'Gravity' was my favorite film this year, so I actually think 'Gravity' should win it all, but considering that 'Gravity' wasn't nominated for screenplay, I don't think there is another among the screenplay nominees that's more deserving than '12 Years.' It looks like the only other nominees in that category are 'American Hustle,' 'Her,' 'Nebraska,' and 'Philomena.' Admittedly, as a new mom watching 'Philomena' broke my heart, but it wasn't anything I hadn't seen before.

    1. I only saw half of first season of Good Wife, it's good stuff but I cannot imagine anything being better than Thrones.

I didn't like 12 Years screenplay and direction. It was too detached, unfocused, ill planned. The actors did a great job regardless.

  11. Great post! I think Gravity has a good chance here. After all, this is the organization that awarded Avatar. Gravity is popular with audiences and critics, so it could be the winner.

DiCaprio could still get that Oscar nod. SAG voters didn't get screeners in time, so they most likely didn't see the film. I expect him to be nominated at the Critics' Choice Awards, but I'm not sure about the BAFTA's.

I still think Before Midnight has a shot at winning Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars. Maybe 12 Years doesn't win that one.

I finally saw The Hunt by the way. It's one of my favorite films of the year, and Mikkelsen is my current Best Actor winner. :)

    1. BAFTA's are always the weirdest and they favor their own, so Leo has little chance there, but it would be cool if he finally has Oscar nom :)

Yeah same here, Mads is my winner and I really don't see anyone beating him :)
