105 things I love about Gone Girl (that no one talks about), part 2.

By s. Sunday, January 4, 2015 , ,
Here's part two of my 105 things I love about Gone Girl (that no one talks about) list, based on Alex's original series. (here's part 1)

55. This shot of pure bliss as Nick is fighting for his life.

56. The scratching shot. I still don't know what its meant to symbolize.

57. Amy's laughter as she realizes just how much trouble Nick is in.

58. This great shot of Greta surrounded by cigarette smoke. Also let's give it up for Lola Kirke - what an alluring presence she has in the film despite playing a trashy chick.

59. The look of hurt on Amy's face as she sees Nick with Andie.

60. The back of the head again! And the fact how much this scene mirrors the ending of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

 61. Tanner laughing at Nick after he tells him all about his situation. It's hilarious.

62. This.

63. Mountain Dew revenge.

64. Margo's oh fuck! as Ellen Abbot makes her incest accusation.

65. The badass lighting of the cigarette. No coughing this time.

66. Amy's hop of joy.

67. Amy deciding that there are still ways to fuck with Nick so she is not gonna off herself.

68. My favorite shot in the entire movie. It says so much with so little.

69. "Are we keeping score?" you can change her name, change her clothes, change her size, but Amy's mind remains the same.

70. The various parallels in the movie.

71. Tanner walking super slowly to great the journalists like a superstar.

72. The shocking brutality of this moment.

73. This moment. This was something that [Rosamund] came up with on the day: her scream into the pillow. I loved the idea of this kind of anger boiling underneath this very lovely and controlled exterior. - David Fincher

74. How frantic this moment is. Much like Nick's before, now its Amy's world collapsing.

75. How easy it is for Amy to fool Desi.

76. Look at Sharon's assistant. He is horrified that he has to give her bad news. This is how I look every single moment, every single day at my job.

77. Nick's confusion and Tanner's apologetic gestures after Sharon finds out about Andie. These two should have their own murder mystery spinoff show.

78. We are watching this moment from Amy's perspective. Do you see how the chandelier kinda makes it look as if Andie had horns?

79. Amy is so upset here she let's her abused princess persona drop. "The girl with the giant cum on me tits", there's that Amy wit!

80. Sela Ward is killing it as Sharon Sheiber in this movie.

81. This is it. The moment when Amy realizes she exchanged one trap for another.

82. The first time I saw Amy's transformation from abused Amy to actual Amy I gasped. Damn, girl.

83. This is my favorite of the shots of Amy's face in entire movie. She looks like a fierce tigress here.

84. Far and away the most disturbing shot in the entire film. Not the fact that a woman would that. The fact that someone would be cold enough to do that to a friend and pull it off so convincingly and meticulously.

85. "She's air".

86. Here's the thing about Amy - when she has a plan there is no one who can match her. When she was forced to act under uncontrolled circumstances she lost and got robbed. But the film sneaks in so many of those 'why not use this' moments for her that only add to her horrific, fascinating psychotic genius. She notices the hammer - why not mutilate myself to make it look like I was abused and make people not take a second look at my face because they think I'd be hurt by those looks, hence making it less likely anyone recognizes me? She notices the beet juice - why not use it to make it look like I was raped and I miscarried? She notices the box cutter - why not use this to kill Desi? She notices the bottle - why not use it to make it look I was raped? She doesn't think in advance of those specific things, she simply sees them, takes them and utilizes them for her plan. That is the scariest thing - the ideas are already in her head but she can use any random stuff that's lying around to give credibility to her lies.

87. That moment. It's too fucked up to even wonder where exactly she put that bottle.

88. Look at her eyes. Hitchcock would have proposed to that woman on the spot.

89. The way this whole scene is shot is one thing but the way this petite blonde overpowers Desi is another. This is pure ruthlessness.

90. How sad Amy looks after killing Desi and how quickly she - literally - shakes it off.

91. This. Good God.

92. The fact that tender, romantic and enchanting Sugar Storm is reprised in this scene.

93. Amy's dramatic faint.

 94. It's amazing how funny both Pike and Affleck can be with this crazy script.

95. My favorite moment of Pike's performance. Amy is not even pretending here. She is so coy.

96. Amy's star status was well described in the book but it's exquisite how clear and powerful Fincher makes it with this shot. Look at Amy. She is playing saint again.

97. There are a lot of bizarre 'why was Amy covered in blood?' questions. Did it escape people that here the film shifted gears and we are in satire genre? Knowing Amy she probably asked not to be washed, to look like she did for the cameras. Regardless, all of this was done for symbolism, of Amy coming clean with Nick in their house.

98. That’s my favourite shot of Rosamund ever when she says, “Sleep on it.” It’s like you see she is strong, she is stunning, and she is nuts. — David Fincher,

99. This shot of Amy being glad to be home. It's almost cute, isn't it?

100. Fincher knows a lot of things but sometimes he is dead wrong. In the commentary he observes how much he likes that Amy, overnight, took control of Nick's cat. It's not Nick's cat! Bleecker is Amy's beloved cat. I sorta hate it how Fincher used the most humanly sympathetic thing about Amy in the book - her devotion to her cat - as a plot device to make Nick more sympathetic. Good thing in the end of the movie Bleecker is on the right side of the conflict.

101. You gotta appreciate the little fight Nick shows when he sasses Amy. "Amazing?"

102. Amy hits the BACK of her head three times in the movie. One time as Diary Amy, one time as Ozark Amy and one time as Real Amy.

103. This shot of Nick's face after Amy's cunt speech. It's like he finally realized who his wife is and how fucked he is.

104. How much this reminds me of the final moments in Sunset Blvd.

105. The first time I saw these two images next to each other I was legitimately startled. She looks completely different and it's all because of the eyes - such an angel in the first one and completely bloodthirsty predator in the second.

  1. I love this one even more! Good catch on the TGWTDT link at #60. #93 is my favourite shot of the film. It's hilarious.
Amy's little jump was so cute. And obviously Amy in Desi's house is the greatest.
That last shot too, man. Amazing Rosamund.

    1. Thanks so much! Oh yeah 93 sums up the story quite well!

  2. Loved this so much, brilliant work! I need to go back and watch GG again now, so I can see all of these moments while I'm watching the film! I loved the first hour of the film, but the second half is just stunning. My absolute favourite moment from the film was the parallel between the first and last shots. In that last shot, I was just speechless. I will be extremely happy when/if Julianne wins the Oscar for Still Alice, but I know that Rosamund Pike gave the absolute best performance of 2014. The rest of the cast is also fantastic. How did SAG not nominate that cast, but nominated Theory of Everything?

    1. Thank you! I really have no idea how some of those decisions are made this Oscar season, the worst one is still BP snub over at Globes, but they tend to get insane when they nominate

  3. Amazing! You have such an excellent eye for these things. I didn't even know the last two images were different when watching the film -- is one from the beginning and the other from the end? You're right, they're completely different. Amy is such an interesting character, so well crafted, and Fincher gave complete justice to her. Amazing.

    1. Thanks! Yep, the first one is beginning, the other the end.

  4. Awesome post! So many great things you pointed out here. I didn't realize Amy gets her head smacked those three times, and great notices on how many pans are on the back of her head too. I'm feeling a need to do my own list, lol.

For me, I think the physical itch is the one she needs to psychologically scratch. She picks her leg right as she's looking for the conference video online and says "Give me that darling Nicky smile"; her itch is scratched seeing him fall into her trap/plans...if that makes sense. :)

    1. Thanks!

I like the theory, but I don't think that's it, not with someone as meticulous as Fincher.

  5. Another fantastic list here Sati!

Oh man, re: #59, I sooooo hated Nick in that scene with Andie, the betrayed-look on Amy’s face is heart-wrenching.

Love the mention of Sela Ward, she really was great in her small role here. Nice to see some seasoned actresses we haven’t seen in a while popping up in 2014, Rene Russo in Nightcrawler is another one.

That bloody shot of Amy on the bed definitely rivals that of the original Carrie! Somehow I just thought of that, and both are of wronged women getting even.

Btw, are gonna see THAT shot of Ben’s um, body part in the shower scene in Part 3 then? ;-)

    1. Nick is such a shit.

Oh absolutely, it's nice there were few memorable performances from them in 2014 as opposed to none, as it's usually the case because of the lack of good material.

Well, there is no part 3, we reached the end of the movie :)

    2. Ahah yes I know, I was just joking about Part 3. I just thought maybe you'd dedicate a post for that shower scene alone, mwahahaha!

    3. Well no, it's only Affleck :)

    4. Hey Sati, may I borrow some of the shots of Pike as Amy from your two-part GG posts? I'm doing a Best Female Performances list and of course she makes my list :D I'll give you credit of course.

  6. YAY! I've been actively looking forward to tis post, and it's even more fabulous than Part 1. Reading it is pure pleasure.

"The girl with the giant cum on me tits" ... Ha ha! That was a classic moment.

  7. Man, I squeed over that little jump. I was hoping you were going to include that. That's my favorite Amy moment.

Beware of the Twizzler.... that should be the new candy for villains. Twizzlers.... taste so good that you wanna be bad!!!!

Even though I would want Marion Cotillard to get the Oscar for Two Days, One Night, I would be very happy if Rosamund wins. The looks that she gives are awesome. And I really, really, really, really, really, really, really hope she does that hope when she wins that Oscar.

  8. One thing I noticed about the Desi/box cutter moment, besides it the fact that it gave me a panic attack in the theater, is that it mimics the editing style that Kirk Baxter used when Nick pushes Amy against the staircase banister. Those are two moments of violence inflicted upon a person that are signposts as to where the characters are in the story at that moment. You can feel that Fincher was in the editing room with Kirk talking about those scenes together.

    1. Yep! Fincher had this great, heartbeat/blacking out rhythm to them because of that editing technique. It was very distinctive and i loved how Amy is victim in one but an completely undefeated predator in the other

  10. Another great post about a great movie. For me, I thought the was delivering what, for Sharon, is great news directly leading to that shot in #80. In my review, posting in a couple hours, I specifically give Ward props for precisely that look. Outstanding job.

    1. Oh it was a bit more explained in the book - Sharon hoped for a deep lovey dovey interview with Nick, the wronged man and then the bomb that he is a dick gets dropped, hence her wtf shout.

  11. Love, love, LOVE this! Great post. Those last two images next to each other are really startling. And I love Amy's little hair flip thing she did after she killed Desi. That was just so...Amy.

And my husband laughed so hard at the "cum on me tits" line. I did too.

    1. Thank you! Those hair flips were magic, there's a bunch of gifsets on tumblr of Amy just flipping her hair :)

  12. Brilliant Margaret, loved this one even more. My favorite here is #88. I honestly did not know she hits the wall three times in #102, good catch.

I have not thought about leg-scratching scene. But it gave me the impression how much transformation Amy suffered while she was in that shelter and how different her "new character" was from real her.

    1. Yeah it's all because of that but I feel Fincher wanted to tell us more with that, could be as easy as her not shaving her legs but I don't buy it, it's too easy

    2. You probably are right. Share if you come up with an explanation.

      Delete
    3. I'll doubt I will come up with anything, Fincher doesn't mention anything in his commentaries, but who knows maybe one day the mystery will be solved :)

  13. Another incredible list! Love the Twizzlers comment. Your posts are making me love this performance even more. I need to rewatch this movie.

  14. Great stuff. Great stuff. Great stuff.

I totally agree about image #68. There is a lot to that seemingly small and quick shot.

Also there is a seen where NP Harris brushes her hair back with his hand and says something like "I'm going to fix you" which I find a bit unnerving. He is fixing her up in his image. He was no better than anyone else.

    1. Yes Desi was super creepy. Well he was in the book but I think they made him much more sympathetic in the movie, come to think of it all the men were more sympathetic in the movie than in the book

  15. So much YES to your volume 2 here! Number 59 especially was quite heartbreaking to watch. Glad to see that the majority of your scenes focus on Pike, the obvious scene-stealer. I did a similar post with The Theory of Everything to a lesser degree.

    1. Well the movie belongs to Ros, it looks that even though Fincher made some questionable choices in portraying the male characters he still managed to portray Amy well but that's mostly thanks to Pike

  16. The recurring back of the head shots is well-spotted, and like you said in part 1, the source of Amy's ideas, schemes and intrigues

  20. Another wonderful list Sati! Great job. I love all of your choices. I didn't realize the scene in which Amy screamed into the pillow was improvised by Rosamund. It just proves how well suited she was to play that role!

    1. Thank you! Yes, I'm just astonished how much Fincher let her improvised, he must have really trusted her and it definitely paid off

  21. Excellent work again! The more I think about how crazy this movie is, the more I think it won't get a Best Picture nomination. As long as Pike at least gets in, I'm good.
