(166) Gone Girl wasn't snubbed, it was technically missing + links

By Sati. Friday, January 16, 2015
  •  If he gets any more adorable, I'm gonna DIE.
  • Well there is not enough space to share all the awesomeness of Mark's appearance on Graham Norton Show last week.
  • At one point Meryl Streep mentioned how when she was forty she got offered the roles of witches. And this is what happened next:
  • I can't. I can't.
  • There's also this. I love you so much
  •  Do you see how he looks now? This is so amazing. Thank you for leaving his curls alone.
  • I was so hoping he was not gonna shave but he did that for the Globes. WHY?!
  • Here we have two Hulks in one photo. I wasn't a big fan of Amy and Tina's show this year but I love they at least mentioned Mark in the monologue.
  • So how about them Oscar nominations guys? Hahahaahahahahhaha *crying noise* *hits herself in the face with a hammer*
  •  My reaction to nominations? To quote the awesome Joe Pesci in all time great Casino - YOU FUCKS, YOU.
  • People really liked my tweet:
  • Honestly I feel when we, Gone Girl fans, saw the nominations, we looked like Waltz did after the Globes:
  • Ah, we have  'no black actors got nominated' ridiculous whining again. That shitty movie got BP nomination but let's ignore it. No matter who deserves it, some black people need to be nominated or the academy is RACIST!!! OH THE HUMANITY!!
  • This is so fucking pathetic. This is why there are black kids running in the background of Into the Woods. Because if they haven't, black folks would probably make #Streepisracist a trending hasthtag on Twitter.
  • How could you snub that inept director, Academy? How could you snub Oprah for her riveting work as she falls on the side walk? You are so racist, Academy! There is no other option as to why it didn't get more nominations! No, this has to be it!
  • The Academy is not racist. It is however, just as the whole wide world, misogynistic.
  • Look at the variety of amazing roles for male actors this year. And then look at the women -  some of these nominated works is just generic stuff, that was improved because of the talent of the actress playing the part, for example Cotillard. Also the actors, because they had years and years of better opportunities than women are better than them, usually. I know it's a horrible thing to say, but it is true. If you have challenges you grow more than if you are given less challenging work. Imagine a female Fletcher in Whiplash. Who would even play her? One of those - Mirren, Lange, Streep. That's it.
  •  All my energy on Oscar night is gonna go into rooting for Michael Keaton. I have better chance of scoring with Ruffalo than Pike has of winning now. DREAM GONE *stages crime scene*
  • Poland got 5 nominations and 2 of those went to Ida so neither of any of big news stations in my country even mentioned anything else. I'm fairly certain people here do not know what Birdman is or even who got acting nominations, because it's just been relentless repeat of that moment we got nominations with the president of Academy butchering the pronunciation of the names. Still, Dick Pope, you guys.
  •  Please tell me Levine is the one who's gonna perform Lost Stars. No offense to Keira, it's just his version is so much better.
  • Look at Mark's tweets. He's precious.
  • That new Avengers 2 trailer is seriously underwhelming but Mark is super hot in it
  • It looks like Hulk is going through some serious shit in that next part. I just hope they will finally give us Hulk/Black Widow pairing.
  • I haven't had the time to make new Visual Parallels post here since August (thank you grown up life), but I took my talents to tumblr to make a mini post between Birdman and Black Swan.
  • Yeah. I'm good.
  • Birdman is also probably in my top 10 of all time already.
  • Oh, God, do I have...a bird fetish?
  •  While at work today and contemplating how much I hate everything I had an interesting thought during the time of my day I usually spend looking at the phone anxiously awaiting my horrifying boss to call - Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons, who will win Oscars this year (and I swear to God if Keaton doesn't win I'm gonna vomit and dive into it) both played some of the world's best bosses - former in The Other Guys (I should really see it again tonight) and the latter in Burn after Reading. If i had bosses like that I'd run to work - between quoting TLC songs and the world's most no problem guy ever - "For fuck's sake, put him on the next flight to Venezuela!", they are the best.
  • So....I'm gonna need to start watching Hannibal again.
  • Anyone up for fashion show? And please ignore the chaos in the background of these pics. Also they were all taken either before work at 5 AM or after work so I do realize I look like the Queen of the Undead:
  • Yes, the first one is inspired by this.
  •  This week I saw two movies for which Katharine Hepburn won her two latter Oscars. Saw may be overstating it a bit, because I did fast forward most of On the Golden Pond. In my defense the music was giving me a headache
  •  I also saw Wild last night. That was surprisingly magical. I'm not a big fan of Witherpsoon and that stupid Legally Blonde movie - I swear it is actually offensive, as I shed blood, sweat and tears and had my mind and soul ripped apart thanks to law school and dealing with law on daily basis, and that bitch fucking walks in and wears pink and all goes great  what is this?!- but I digress. Witherspoon was actually really wonderful in the movie and she is right after Pike in my line up, she portrayed all other versions of her character so well, even pulling a convincing performance when her character was very young. All of the physical stuff is very impressive too. Dern is a well deserved nominee. Apparently she is in the movie for around 10 mins, but her scenes are spread throughout the film. It's a beautiful performance and the movie is really well directed. I hated Into the Wild but this one is good.
  • Also it's always a big bonus whenever Glory Box by Portishead is played in a movie.
  • Brittani wrote how annoying she thought the rape comments from the member of an audience were but I totally thought the same thing. I do in general mistrust men and I would never feel safe hiking alone. The backpack I'd take? Filled with mace and guns.
  •  New Shameless is airing. No time to see it. Same with new Archer. In fact the only show I had the time to see were the 2 premiere episodes of Parks and Rec. The first one was so-so but the second one had Tammy. It was awesome.
  • As you could see - well not that many of you visited but some did and I thank you - the site was really alive this week with all the lists. I'm so damn tired - between all this list making and visiting your blogs (how do some of you manage to post daily?!) - I'm really exhausted, in a fun movie fan way, but I have so much stuff prepared - Critics Choice ceremony recap on Sunday and my Best and Worst of 2014 list on Tuesday - you better like it, guys, it was so much work - and fun - making that one. I also have the reviews for Foxcather and The Imitation Game ready and perhaps after the third viewing of Birdman I'll finally be able to write something. So far it's just speechless awe and my thoughts are still a true chaos

    1. Every week I fall more and more in love with Mark Ruffalo. Such a cute gif set, and Graham Norton is one of the best talk shows out there.

One of the biggest disappointments this year in terms of nominations is the lack female-centered Best Pictures. They're all about men getting over the same shit again and again. I would've loved to have seen Wild and Gone Girl take up the last two spots.

So happy you liked Wild. Fuck - that movie, Witherspoon and Dern destroyed me and was such a good adaptation.

      1. Well, yes but I generally don't like how people treat movies as gender specific - I related to Riggan in Birdman a lot, also there is a wonderful female character in The Imitation Game. But GG snub just means the Academy didn't get the movie.

I didn't read the novel but the film was very inspiring and lovely!

    2. Bravo! Great post Sati although I do need a little more Ruffalo content please! ;)

    3. I saw the list for the Oscar nominations and decided that I'll just be excited for Tangerines and that's it. The first nomination for Estonia ever so it kind of tops every other category because well, it's all a big mess at this point.

I'm sort of laughing at the fact that Adams got a GG and not even a Oscar nomination - like, that's gotta hurt, right?!

Anyway, I haven't seen Birdman yet but I've postponed my top 10 list for next week because I simply have to have it on my list. I'm so determined to love it based on everything I read about it so I'm certain I will. Also, I'm interested in American Sniper more and more as it got a lot more attention from the Academy than I thought. Then again, war and stuff.. seems to fit right in with them.

At this point it seems you have seen more movies than I have (I'm back working in that awful job I left because life sucks and I must buy food) because all the free time I have is put towards reading. Reading books and reading the endless amount of lists which I can't always comment on because I'm at work and am supposed to focus on work... Anyway, keep up the good work! :)

      1. Adams, from what I heard, didn't even deserve GG nomination let alone the win, so that's effectively second undeserved one in 2 years :/

Oh yeah, I'd be shocked if you saw Birdman and it wasn't in your top 10. American Sniper seems to me like yet another annoying propaganda movie, but I have to see it, since its BP nominee now :/

Oh man, I haven't read a book since summer :/

    4. I liked Wild a lot more than I thought I would too. Reese really went all in in with that performance, which I respect. I honestly didn't think the Oscar noms were THAT shocking. Was bummed Gone Girl didn't have a better showing, and something for A Most Violent Year would've been nice, but otherwise, oh well. This Selma backlash is kind of crazy to me. I mean, regardless of whether or not you like the film, it did earn a Best Picture nomination, which is certainly worth something. Seems like ardent fans of that film wouldn't have been happy unless it earned noms for seemingly everything.

      And thanks for the link!

      1. Exactly, even if it only missed one of the categories they would still shout those nonsensical things. Academy seems to really not understand either GG or how important a ballsy film like that with such a rich female character is nowadays. They are so out of touch.\

        You're very welcome!

    5. Mark Ruffalo is adorable. I too would be all over him. He probably gets more pie in one day than anyone will get a lifetime.

I'm not happy about the diss towards Gone Girl.

Is that a burger from Wendy's that Christoph is eating? Their fries are terrible and their melty-cheese burgers remind me of the awful lunch that I had in high school.

I would go with the black dress.

Seriously, what the fuck, right? They just didn't get it.

I don't know, we don't have Wendy's here but it sounds gross!

    6. Thanks for the link Sati!

Aaaawwww! Mark, stop being so darn adorable!! His expression after Meryl kissed him is just precious, clearly she’s as flustered as he was. More Ruffalo please, it's always entertaining!

Oh, TWO Hulks in one photo! I bet there’ll be more of those this year. Sadly both would probably came home empty-handed at Oscar :(

That’s a great tweet about Gone Girl and absolutely spot on! GO ROSAMUND!

Well, we don’t see eye-to-eye about Selma and Wild, but hey, we can’t agree on everything right? There are plenty more we do agree on :D

      1. He was crazy adorable there! :) Meryl is so lucky in that moment ^^

I was really worried that Wild bored me but it wasn't boring at all for me, probably because I really related to Cheryl

    7. I was glad to see that both Steve Carrell and Mark Ruffalo got nominations for Foxcatcher. I wasn't sure if that movie was going to fly under the Oscar radar or not. I do think Michael Keaton and JK Simmons have both categories wrapped up though.
I have so many movies to catch up on, it's not even funny. I still have to see Wild and Gone Girl.
I'll be curious to see what you think of the Critics Choice Awards, especially with Keaton winning both Best Comedic and Best Dramatic Actor.

      1. Both Wild and GG especially are excellent, hope you like both!

Keaton was amazing on the stage and I loved his speeches, he also was on stage for Best Ensemble and let Andrea Riseborough give the speech was so lovely

    8. I would say that while I wasn't particularly shocked by the nominations, I was quite disappointed since some of my favorites of the year were only given one or two nods, especially over a film like American Sniper (which I didn't think was worthy at all). I think I'll be fine though, the legacy of the films will live on more than the number of Oscars it was nominated for or that it will win.

Oh yes, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Wild. I think it's Reese's best performance after Election, but I do have a soft spot for Legally Blonde (even though I'm not a lawyer, I did find it quite odd that everything went her way), and Laura Dern was also such a warm presence in the film. I'm really happy that they got their nominations.

Also, you look really pretty in all of those outfits, especially the dress with the flower pattern!

      1. Yeah, it just year after year it's disappointing because Academy is so set in their ways - let's award BP to a movie about slavery, not ground breaking sci-fi, let's nominate Eastwood's soldier movie, not a great genre merging thriller....

Wild was so wonderful, indeed they are both very deserving. I also found the cinematography and directing very good.

        Thanks so much! :P

    9. But I bet unlike Twat McRapey, you kept those thoughts to yourself and didn't say them aloud like you were betting on a race or something. lol

Okay, that gifset of Ruffalo is way too adorable. I'm going to have to watch that episode now.

As amusing as I fould the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, I think the backlash is pretty insane as well. I do think the Oscars ignore minority (and indie) movies way too much, but I had a bigger issue with them only selecting 8 Best Picture noms. I think they should have to do an even 10 every time.

And the most offensive thing by far is all those American Sniper noms. What the fuck?

      1. Haha, well I saw it on my own so there was no one to share them with :P

That whole episode was crazy cute :) Mark is just such a joy and McAvoy was so much fun too.

They really should. They should either go back to 5 or do 10. Everything in between is just annoying.

I haven't seen that one yet, but I'll need to check it out soon

    12. Oh I hope Levine's going to sing Lost Stars, he's just a more experienced singer (with a unique voice) that is all. The high notes he'll able to sing (you know from the ending of the song).

I guess compared to the best actors nominees, the actresses don't have the exact level with them. I was just thinking how it's Reese's second nomination after Walk the Line and remember someone said that she was lucky because in that year the competition wasn't high, and wondering if it's happening again. But if it does happen, it's an unfair opinion for her (I haven't seen Wild yet)

      1. I really hope so too, Keira's version is nice but it's not as memorable as the final rendition.

Well she really deserves the nomination, she is actually right after Pike in my line up.

    14. Seriously, if I too see another tweeter twatting about how racist the Academy is, or hashtag any of that ish, I'm literally going to throwup. Was last year totally forgotten? Misogynistic is absolutely right...can that please trend instead? Gone Girl is absolutely technically missing is nearly every category; I'm disgusted. This year is a total laugh riot. Meh.

I'm still recovering from all the Gone Girl snubbage. I need to see Selma so I can weigh in on that debate. That whole situation is just weird.

I'm starting to fear that Bradley Cooper may be coming for Keaton's Oscar...like...I still think Keaton will win...but Cooper is going to give him a run for his money. Apparently American Sniper is the Academy's cup of tea :-P

I actually thought the other day that a VP between Black Swan and Birdman would be awesome. Gonna check out your post now.

Totally agree with you about the female nominees for the Oscars this year. I wouldn't say there are any that are massively awe-inspiring, pretty much just OK roles with amazing actresses.

    20. I'm behind on a few episodes of Graham Norton. I *must* watch that episode!

It sucks that Lost Stars has no real chance of winning the Oscar now. I think Glory from Selma will win, since they'll feel they HAVE to give the film something.
