(197) Witching hour + links

By Sati. Friday, August 21, 2015
  • The Witch trailer is so freaking awesome and everyone seems to be loving it which is great. I have a small hope these....lovely and talented - and so skilled at what they do - people over at A24 (sarcasm sign! sarcasm sign! sarcasm sign!) see how much interest is there for this one and they decide to release it sooner than 2016. My God, some flick with Segrl and Eisenberg they can release this year, but this they can't? Are they kidding?
  • Also as a Wiccan I just love whenever I get to do this. Although really, more films like Practical Magic wouldn't hurt.
  • Me...sad. That's my reaction to The Man from U.N.C.L.E. not very good box office numbers. It's basically Henry Cavill's James Bond audition, why the fuck would people not see that?  Look, I haven't seen the film (yet) but Ritchie made my third favorite movie of all time, gave a beginning to Jason Statham's career and handcuffed RDJ to the bed post and covered his junk with pillow only. The guy is a hero. So it's a shame that the film is not earning money.
  • At least Henry is getting good reviews out of this. He is so heartbreakingly beautiful. I actually recently realized  he may be too beautiful. No, seriously, this is the kind of the realizations I have. Not "maybe I should study more to really pass the exam this year" or "maybe I should look for a job closer to what I want to do so I don't need to work in that hellhole surrounded by unimaginable cuntiness any longer" (I had a fun week at work - sarcasm sign!). No, my realizations are like that - Henry Cavill is just too beautiful to exist.  Like literally, even if you think you're hot you look at him and you think "well, that's just out of my league".  Kaley Cuoco, who is not a bad looking girl, looked like what I imagine a woman who cleans up toilets at the train station looks (these toilets being in the shittiest part of my Eastern European country, like back in the 80's when Russians ruled us and I imagine they looked so bad that they made Trainspotting crapper look like Beyonce's golden one) next to him when they were "dating" (which must have been some sort of publicity stunt).
  • I read there is a scene where his bath robe is opened and you can see his chest hair.
  • When I finally see it, I'm gonna pass the fuck out.
  • There's a rumor out there that George Miller may be making Man of Steel 2. As much as I'd love for DC to have a guaranteed awesome Superman movie at last, Miller really needs to bring us more Mad Max awesomeness.
  • Meanwhile there is really amusing and surreal anecdote that Michael Shannon shared about Batman v Superman.
  • There are new Harley pictures! It looks like she is going to be a tattoo artist.
  • So the word is that Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 is getting delayed because Ridley Scott insists on making Prometheus 2 before Neill does his thing. Look, I was one of, it seems, very few people who actually loved Prometheus but Scott needs to back the fuck off and give Neil the first spot. Yes, it's not his fault that the franchise got derailed - and I blame Cameron for steering it from horror to action - but making a decent Ripley starring Alien film should be a priority. Also the more time for them to write the script Prometheus 2, the better. Even I agree they really should have put more thought into the first one.
  • Here we go, the first look at Lady Gaga in American Horror Story: Hotel. And the first creepy teasers are finally here!
  • I finally caught up with Hannibal and holy shit is Richard Armitage really amazing as Franics Dollarhyde. He is literally better with each episode. It's so saddening NBC pulled the plug and Fuller is not willing to make another season right now. And woah are Francis' scenes with Reba amazing. That tiger scene was so beautiful, as was the sex scene too. I'm yet to see yesterday's episode but I know what happens and damn, are characters impossible to kill on that show.
  • I cannot remember the last time I saw an actual movie other than the recent rewatch of Mad Max: Fury Road. Oh, this is bad. I did read 2 books in the last two weeks but seriously, the films are piling up. I saw 2 Conan episodes this week, so I'm down to like....55 to catch up with.
  • Luckiest Girl Alive! I couldn't tear myself from that book. I have about 50 pages to go but seriously yesterday I reached chapter 12, which all the reviews hyped and I nearly shat myself. I was sitting at work and actually gasping as I was scrolling the pages on my smartphone (ah, technology!). It is so good. Oh my God, so good. They better not screw up that adaptation because if done right and if done without worrying about gore this can be one hell of a sequence.
  • I love the book so much that I made a gifset illustrating it:
  • Judging from the number of notes I got the people who read the books out of NYT bestsellers list and tumblr crowd are mutually exclusive.
  • I've been rewatching Desperate Houseviews. God I love Bree so much. I forgot how entertaining that show is, and funny too. It's good because I really need funny things in my life right now.
  • Rebecca Ferguson joined Emily Blunt in adaptation of Girl on a Train. I'm thrilled for Rebecca and this is a very good casting, considering the two look a lot alike. My problem is that when reading the book I really despised her character, Anna. I suspect Ferguson playing the part will soften my heart.
  • And while we are on the topic I have actual post prepared about upcoming adaptations of some of the awesome books I read so that's coming Monday.
  •  As I'm rewatching Desperate Housewives vinnieh is watching it for the first time and he posted a great review of season 3
  • Josh ranks Mission Impossible movies
  • MettelRay reviews Ant-Man
  • Andrew writes about his own movie God - Xavier Dolan
  • Alex defends movies in real time
  • Brittani and m.brown loved Kingsman

    1. Shared The Witch trailer with my friend who's a complete horror movie fanatic and he got so excited I got excited too.. but I doubt I will manage to see it in the cinema because I will shit my pants. Sometimes I hate that I get scared way too easily.

And I hope all goes well for Ritchie.. though I do sort of wish he did something more current, something that is set in the Manchester underground with iPhones and apps and weird characters that have watched way too many movies or something. I don't know, but I will like UNCLE, I'm sure of it..

I wonder if AHS is going to be on my radar this time.. because I'm actually rather interested to see how well Lady Gaga will hold up. I think she will be brilliant because most of her videos are all well acted and she has similar artistic taste that AHS has. Have you watched the trailer for that new comedy horror show they are making with Emma Roberts, Scream Queens? It looks bad to me, like, real bad.

      Thanks for the link btw!

      1. I think this will get the simultaneous release on VOD which means the Internet gets it right away. But I read this should really be seen on the big screen because the look of the movie is so meticulous and gorgeous

I think the success of Sherlock Holmes really pushed Ritchie into this bigger movies field that is not necessarily the best use of his talents :/

I did, it actually has a bunch of connections to AHS including the showrunner. It looks kinda stupid, but who knows, maybe it's going to be fun

    2. LOVE that trailer for The Witch. Can't wait to see it. Also getting increasingly excited to see Robbie as Harley. Thanks so much for the link!

    4. I didn't like Girl on a Train that much but I am looking forward for the movie. I cannot wait to see what Blunt and Ferguson do with their characters. Also, great Avengers gif. They really screwed up Black Widow in that movie.

      1. That entire movie was so bad but the treatment of BW character was really one of the worst things about it :/

    5. OMG that last gifset lololol.

I just realizes the pattern of Harley's arm tattoo is like her classic jester costume. <3

I go back and forth on wanting to read The Luckiest Girl Alive. Good Reads is pretty divided on it, and I'm pretty sure I know what humiliation she suffered. Not sure if I want to read that scene. I'm a wuss about that.

      1. You're right! I haven't noticed that tattoo before

It's not so much a scene as a series of flashbacks she has and line here and there referring to what happened. The incident that is in chapter 12 is something entirely different, different kind of violence

    6. Very nice finish to this post. Love the Harley pics.

    8. Ahah, interesting that you're now crushing on Henry C. just as I'm getting over mine. I do think he IS beautiful, like you said perhaps TOO beautiful. But yet he doesn't do it for me anymore, but no worries, there are plenty of girls in your camp :D

Armitage on the other hand, is amazing as Red Dragon. I don't watch that show but I watch clips of him in that role and man, he is incredible!!

My heart still belongs to Stanley Weber though, yes I seem to be the only one in the blogosphere but that's ok, I feel like I belong in an *exclusive* club, ahah. I bet after Outlander season 2 more people will see why I'm so crazy about him.

      1. Oh I've been crushing on this man since his The Tudors years :)

Man, I really need to catch up with Outlander

    9. The Witch looks fantastic! Yet again, A24 is messing up the marketing. For shame.

Desperate Housewives was a great show. It's a shame people looked down on it, because I always enjoyed it.

That last gifset! I still haven't seen Ultron but that gifset is just great.

By the way, I saw Mad Max! It was AMAZING. Charlize, Tom, Nicholas, George Miller... just, everything about it was so good.

So great that you liked Mad Max! I really don't think there's gonna be a better film this year

    10. Desperate housewives is one of my all time favorite shows! The first 4 seasons are pure gold and the comedy is outstanding!

I'd better start reading Luckiest Girl Alive. If you liked it so much then It is a must read :).

DH really has some of the best performances in TV and it has so many funny and touching moments.

    11. I loved The Man From UNCLE. It's so much fun! Henry Cavill is unnaturally handsome in it. I'd never seen a movie with him in it before and I was ASTOUNDED but how good looking he is in motion. Pictures do not do him justice.

I hope this season of AHS is a step up from Freak Show...

      1. So glad to read it! I discovered Henry like a whole bunch of other people in The Tudors and he really is almost too much to look at :)

I enjoyed Freak Show but yeah I wish the show would be on the level of Asylum again

    12. Hi Sati! Great rambler today. I love the last gif set! It's so flipping true! I am curious about 'The Witch' film. I wonder if it's based on a book or a short story? If so, I'd be interested in reading it.

I was one of those people who didn't go see 'Man From Uncle.' I just haven't had time over the last few weeks. I started classes again. I'll have to pick up movie watching soon. I am disappointed with the casting of Alicia Vikander. I think I may be one of the few people who is not a fan of hers.

Hannibal has drastically improved with the casting of Armitage. Wesley has upped her game. She was terrible in 'True Blood,' so I was surprised that I enjoyed her character in 'Hannibal.' If only Fuller had focused more of the season on Armitage and Wesley... The earlier episodes were really bad. It's unfortunate because the latter part of the season has been great.

      1. Thank you! No, it's original story but Robert Eggers did a lot of research for the film so that everything would be authentic. The lines are even lifted from some old books and the story has elements of people's testimonies about witches

I'm also not a fan. She just seems so phony, especially with that whole dating Fass for publicity thing

Yeah there is a clear improvement in the latter part but I kinda enjoyed the early episodes too

    13. I cannot wait to watch The Witch, that trailer was freaking amazing and it's so good to see something spooky and filled with horror that doesn't seem to rely on jumpscares. At least I hope it doesn't turn into something derivative when we actually get to watch the whole thing.

I never went to see that Man From UNCLE film but Henry Cavill is so good looking it should be illegal. Imagine if he had been picked for Fifty Shades of Grey, peoples' eyes would have melted.

And those Black Widow gifs are so on point!

    14. Thanks for the link!

I can't wait for Girl on a Train, and I really enjoyed The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which I agree should've done better at the box office.
