8 actresses who would be a better choice for Carrie than Chloe Moretz

Good Lord, it came to that. They are remaking "Carrie". The idea to remake Brian De Palma's brilliant masterpiece is ridiculous. For a while I was hoping that the project will die out, just like another stupid idea - "The Birds" remake. Unfortunately, yesterday the news broke about the studio finding the actress for the main part. And wow, it suddenly became even worse idea than it was. They want Chloe Moretz to play Carrie. 15 year old actress, who while was good in horror movie "Let me in" looks nothing like someone you would see and go "oh, I bet kids bullied her in school". She would be good in "Taxi Driver" remake playing adolescent hooker, not troubled girl with telekinetic powers. What's so memorable about Spacek's Carrie are her amazing eyes that were often the focus of the movie - Moretz doesn't stand a chance.  I mean there are some things that just can't get better - Spacek was 27 years old when she played Carrie, yet she captured her innocence and the sense of being lost completely. However if I had to chose someone to play Carrie, here are my 8 choices, who would all be better than Moretz:.

1. Taissa Farmiga
Age: 18
Horror experience: Dealing with homicidal boyfriend and house of horrors in "American Horror Story"
Special asset: Her eyes, she would be able to do what Spacek did, plus she is as delicate as Carrie is supposed to be.

2. Mia Wasikowska
Age: 23
Horror experience: Being forced to run away from Michael Fassbender in "Jane Eyre" which is just about the freakiest thing I can imagine
Special asset: She doesn't look like a sex bomb and she is a very good actress

3. Ashley Bell
Age: 26
Horror experience: She freaked everyone out in "The Last Exorcism"
Special asset: She already has some experience with being drenched with blood

4. Elle Fanning
Age: 14
Horror experience: Flirting with aged Brad Pitt in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and then there's upcoming "Maleficient" where as a Princess Aurora she will have to face Brad's better half (or is it?) super skinny Angelina Jolie
Special asset: There was tons of CGI in Super 8, a lot of impressive scenes and a shitload of things happening but she was the only one that truly captivated me. Amazing on-screen presence.

5. Saoirse Ronan
Age: 18
Horror experience: Yet to come - she is starring in adaptation of Stephanie Meyer's "The Host" and for the rest of her life, just as poor Kristen Stewart, she will have to live with that.
Special asset: Her eyes.

6. Carey Mulligan
Age: 27
Horror experience: Banana scene in "An Education"
Special asset: She projects vulnerability, innocence and subtlety. And it would be very interesting to see her turn homicidal on screen.

7. Isabelle Fuhrman
Age: 15
Horror Experience: Being a good match for Patrick Bateman and maybe even Damien from "Omen" in "Orphan".
Special asset: She is super creepy. Just dye her hair blonde and there you go.

8. Jennifer Lawrence
Age: 22
Horror experience: Fighting off rednecks in "Winter's Bone"
Special asset: She has great talent and doesn't look like Hollywood superstar, just like an average girl next door.

Seriously, most of these girls already look the part. And they go in and they get adolescent sex kitten to play Carrie. I mean, really. Will there be pink glitter instead of pig's blood? Well done, Hollywood!
Chloe Moretz / Sissy Spacek in "Carrie"

  1. Man. So annoying. Chloe Moretz is too sure of herself to play Carrie. Also, I bet they'll modernise it and then people will film the Carrie prom scene on their phones or something. I can see it happening already.
I think out of the actresses you suggested, Farmiga or Wasikowska would be perfect. The others wouldn't be half as good to play the helpless side of her that well. Ronan has the eyes, but she's more hypnotic than scary.

    1. Yeah, Saoirse is very hypnotic. Oh God, I didn't even think about them modernizing it, you're completely right.

  2. I actually like Chloe, but something we have to accept is that almost every good, heck even half-good movie will soon be remade/rebooted by Hollywood. If they're too lazy to do a remake, they'll just re-release it in 3D (looking at you Phantom Menace, Titanic, Beauty & Beast). Worst still, they'll re-release it in 3D, then remake it, followed by a reboot.

    1. Yeah, but for some reason I always believed that perfect movies will always remain safe. "Rosemary's Baby", "The Birds", "Carrie", "Vertigo"...it's just insane to try renew something that is the best as it can be.

  3. Nice list, I couldn't agree more. Chloe Moretz looks more like a popular cheerleader than an introvert. And well, if we're really gonna have a remake to this true classic, at least cast someone who'll do justice to it. IMO Saoirse would be the perfect choice.

    1. I feel they only hired Moretz because she is famous, but Saoirse is equally well known and looks so much more the part. Thank for the comment, Marina!

  4. I like Chloe Moretz but I agree, she's wrong for the role.

I want to add Willa Holland. Now, you might know her from Gossip Girl which I have never seen before.

I'm suggesting her based on her performance in Genova which I really liked but she might be too pretty for that part.

    1. I haven't seen her in anything, she is very pretty, but I think with the minimum of make up she could pull it off - http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3954678272/nm1473267

  5. Oooh, that Isabelle Fuhrman looks like a good choice. Not so sure about Mia Wasikowska (she gets better every time I see her, but she's not amazing yet). Taissa Farmiga looks like a good choice too!
I'm going to have to find a copy of Carrie to watch now!!!

    1. Yeah, she keeps getting better. I really loved her work in Jane Eyre, but she doesn't have much experience with productions other than drama or fantasy.

  6. Mia would have been my top girl for this. I love Saoirse and Cjloe but i think they're both too rough for this role. I think Carey is too old for it and I don't think Jennifer would be a good fit either. I like the rest of the choices though

    1. Well, Spacek was approaching 30 when she played the part and I never doubted the choice when I was watching the film, she looked like a high school girl. When I look at Carey in An Education it reminds me a lot of the scenes when Carrie is preparing for the prom, for some reason.

  7. I like Moretz, but there's no fucking way she's gonna be able to play the role well. Ah well, we'll have to wait and see.

I totally agree about Wasikowska, though. She has the perfect look for the role. Isabelle Fuhrman is a good choice, too...she scares the crap out of me. I wouldn't hesitate to add Jodelle Ferland. She's an odd looking girl, who has some real acting chops.

Ugh, they should have put more thought into that casting. I know that no-one is ever going to top Sissy Spacek, but still...

    1. I think they only chose Chloe because she is so popular right now and ever since Kick-Ass people went nuts for her, for some reason I'll never understand. I don't know if it's her acting choices or the vibes she gives, but she always seemed vulgar to me.

    2. Vulgar? lol

The movie is not a remake of the original but rather a more closely adapted version of the novel. The '76 film was quite different from the book which is why they used a 27-year-old despite the fact that the in the book the character was 16.

    3. When you use "lol" after the question mark where you quote someone's words it makes you look like an idiot.

That's quite logical. Hire a 27-year old to play a high school girl and that's all because "it's quite different from the book".

Not that the age has anything to do with the matter. She could be 11, 15, 20, 25 and still be wrong.

  8. If they don't do a copy of De Palma's "Carrie" This could be quite good. Chloe was good in "Let Me In"(Although I prefer the original) and I think she could pull of the role of the troubled teenage quite affectively. As for Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Didn't a lot of people have the same complaints when Heath Ledger was announced as The Joker for The Dark Knight and look what he acomplished with that role.

    1. Heath Ledger is a whole another league than Anne "One Day" Hathaway...

  9. Couple things: first, I completely agree that a remake of Carrie is wholly unnecessary. Second, I actually don’t mind that Mortez is so young, mostly because she doesn’t look that young and also because she doesn’t ACT than young.

Lastly, many of your choices are very very interesting. When I first heard of this remake, I thought Elle Fanning would be perfect. But I’m a huge fan of Mia Wasikowska’a work in In Treatment, so she’d work too. And Carey Mulligan is, well, Carey Mulligan.

Great selections here… let’s just hope the movie is somewhat good.

    1. Her age is really not a factor for me, I think with Carrie it's mostly about the ability to channel both delicacy and repression well, so an actress can be 13 or 23, if she knows what she is doing and fits the character it will go well. Fanning is really awesome, I wish she would do this, she was so captivating in Super 8.

  10. My vote would be for SHARE SHE (or at least that is how I think you pronounce it!)

    Great article Sati

    1. Yeah ^^ I hate the comment system on blogger, I never know if my comments are saved and what do they improve? the dashboard look, ridiculous.

  12. Well, I feel pretty strongly that they shouldn't remake the film at all, so if that has to happen I guess it doesn't matter much to me who plays the role. At least they picked someone the right age, but some of your choices were the right age, too.

Talking about the "sexiness" and attractiveness of barely post-pubescent girls like Moretz or Fanning is getting into uncomfortable territory for me, so I won't comment on that except to say that all of the choices are probably too attractive to be believable, but that's very common in all movies. If they want to downplay that feature they can use makeup to make them less attractive (check out what it did to the beautiful Charlize Theron in Monster.)

    1. What they did to Theron in Monster was incredible, maybe it could work here. However Chloe gives off this vibe that doesn't feel like Carrie at all.

  13. Mia Wasikowska would have been the best choice in my opinion.

    1. Oh she would be wonderful. With her on board I wouldn't hate the idea of a remake that much.

  14. What I don't understand is why remake it again at all? It's already been remade twice; the big-screen remake in 2002 was horrible and the "sequel" in 1999 was just as bad. The original Carrie was great and doesn't need to be remade, especially not with Chloe Moretz.

Though you do provide some great actresses, any of which would have been a far superior choice.

    1. Thanks! Yeah I don't get this crazy idea. Sure it's a great story but a great movie based on that already exist.

  15. good list! imo, Mia Wasikowska is perfect for the role (or Isabelle Fuhrman). I've read the book and seen De Palma's adaptation, and I think these two can do 'innocent' & "insanely scary when provoked" just like what Spacek did.

    1. Thank you! It's a shame they didn't hire Wasikowska.

  16. I'd say Isabelle Fuhrman would have been the perfect pick.

They went with Chloe to pull in the guys to the movie. Chloe's always had enormous sex appeal. Some critics even thought she had been sexualized in the first Kick-Ass movie. But she really wasn't. Guys just reacted to her already back then and thought she was hot. Just look at every photo session after that film, they all play on how sexy she is.

    1. I totally agree. Though, I'm a girl, so Chloe being sexy or not doesn't matter to me. She was the wrong pick, period, and doing the remake was utterly moronic to begin with. The original is a classic!

But, yeah, Chloe's sex appeal was surely the main reason they picked her, just to get the guys to go see the film. As you point out, guys fell for her already in Kick-Ass. I've actually heard several guys admit they found her hot/sexy, especially in the schoolgirl outfit. So that's just a fact (even if it's not politically correct to state it, because she was so young).

Anyway, if the movie had to be remade, I would pick Isabelle Fuhrman too. She was so creepy in Orphan. Second pick would probably be Elle Fanning.

    2. You are right. I'm pretty sure that Chloe Moretz was picked for the part due to her sex appeal. I am a guy, so I can confirm what you are writing. There's something about Chloe that just oozes sex.

And you're right, a lot of guys I've talked to found her hot already in Kick-Ass. She just radiated sex somehow and those ripe lips are simply amazing. As you write, it's a sensitive subject but her abnormal sex appeal back then sure helped propel her into stardom.

Anyway, totally miscast in Carrie. I too would have picked Isabelle Fuhrman.
