(28) Week with Charlize + links

By Sati. Friday, May 25, 2012

  • I've been watching a lot of films with Charlize Theron this week, including Monster and North Country (again) and for the first time:
    1. The Life and Death of Peter Sellers - she was great in it and it was interesting that playing Britt Ekland (picture above) she was even more beautiful than actual Britt Ekland. Geoffrey Rush was fantastic in the film, though the film itself was a bit too odd.
    2. In the Valley of Elah - Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize were great in this one but the film was too long for its own good.
    3. Cider House Rules - it was all right but nothing special. Michael Caine won Oscar for this? What?
    4. Burning Plain - I wish the film focused on Charlize's character. Jennifer Lawrence and Kim Basigner were good but the narrative was scattered for the sake of being scattered. It would be much better to just focus on one character, as lovely as the ending montage was.
  • Speaking of Charlize she was on Jay Leno's show this week and they showed the clip of her and Fass in Prometheus. You could cut sexual tension between them with a knife in this thing.
  • Speaking of there is a new TV spot. I will not post this one as I know most of the readers here want to avoid the spoilers and there is a glimpse of the creature in this one.
  • Also this weekend the final trailer for Prometheus running a little over 1 minute will premiere. Fasten your seatbelts!
  • Apparently the scene below is not in Snow White and the Huntsman. I hate it when something awesome is in the trailer and doesn't end up in the final picture.
  • I saw The Dictator and it was hilarious. Not as hilarious as Borat or Bruno but the lines like "nobody touch the mini bar, this is a fucking rip off!" made me laugh really hard. Also Sasha Baron Cohen is one of the few people whose ideas shock me so much that my jaw drops. I'm just gonna say - cellphone and vagina.
  • I watched Boys Don't Cry - the movie was very average and while Swank was excellent it was Chloe Sevigny who impressed me the most.
  • I finally saw a lot of movies since I can't learn all the time and needed a little break, so reviews are coming up on the blog soon. Also I had time because I walk my dog at 4 AM and I sleep every other  two days or so. I may be an android and not even know it.
  • Cannes is the scene for many great movies now, so it would seem. Amour, Rust and Bone, Killing them Softly...I'm also interested in The Paperboy since apparently it's either getting massacred or raved about in the reviews. Also I'm curious to see Kidman's work in it, which one of the reviewers called her best performance since To Die For.
  • Jean Dujardin is in Cannes. Cannes is so lucky!
  • Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart kissed in Cannes. I'm writing this because I was searching for some good pictures from On the Road and Cosmopolis on tumblr today and all I could find was the gifs of them making out. It's Fassbender and that chick from Shame shooting sex scene up against the window all over again.
  • Also check out Ryan Gosling, being confused as he walks in front of the camera:
  • The Great Gatsby trailer is here and people are in hysterics. I like the trailer but why is Tobey McGuire here? My God. Also I'm grateful for all the Leo wants Oscar jokes that subsequently appeared on the Internet.
  • Game of Thrones had "calm before the storm" episode last Sunday. Though it did have very important (for season 3) love scene which was by far the most lovely and romantic scene of such nature in the show, great moments between Brienne and Jaime and terrific and wicked triumph of Cersei. Lena Headey is acting the crap out of this character.
  • Also Game of Thrones/The National fans - check this out:

  1. Gotta love Gosling. I actually really like the casting of Maguire as Nick. I hope there's more of him.

I'm skipping all TV spots for Prometheus and SWATH. I really want to see The Paperboy too. I lurve To Die For.

Oh and I loved last week's GoT episode. Man Tyrion is awesome. And yes Headey is brilliant bitch. Can't wait for the next episode. The promo gives me goosebumps.

    1. The next episode is the most expensive in the series, but I'm looking forward to the finale the most, since one of the most surreal sequences of the series will be there.

Now I really want to hear someone do 'The Bear and the Maiden Fair'

    1. They should make an album with GOT inspired songs :)

  3. You should check out 'Young Adult' if you get the chance. Charlize Theron delivers quite a performance in the leading role and Diablo Cody is always an interesting writer.

  4. Ah, I love me some Charlize. She's so good in the movies you mentioned. (Side note: yes, I cannot believe Caine won the Oscar that year, considering his competition.)

Thanks so much for the link!

    1. You're welcome! I was shocked when I saw he won on imdb, he was barely even in the film and it was not a especially great performance to begin with.

  5. Thanks. BTW, I was just listening to Mark Kermode interviewing Charlize. She seems pretty laid-back. I'd like to hang out with her. Have you seen her Funny or Die videos?

She's a riot. Please, put her in a low-brow, raunchy comedy.

I didn't like In the Valley of Elah and Burning Plain either. The former for being too long and very heavy-handed. The latter for just being too scattered and it emphasize that Guillermo Arriaga should never direct a film based on his own script.

    1. I did, they are so funny! Charlize has great sense of humour and it's quite clear she is very intelligent, from the interviews I've seen with her promoting Prometheus and Young Adult she really comes up with interesting and unconventional answers.

  7. I'm still interested in The Paperboy. The poster for it is especially cool. All I'm hearing about it, though, is that Nicole Kidman urinates on Zac Efron. Yeah.

North Country is a pretty good film. I'm finally catching up with Young Adult this week, I can't wait!

The Leo vs. Oscar posts are the best.

    Thanks for the link, too!

    1. Yeah, I was hoping for it to be some sick depraved sex thing, turns out it's the old jellyfish sting bit :)

  8. WHAT? That mirror shattering scene is not in the movie?? UNBELIEVABLE!!

I've been avoiding the TV spots as well. I don't want to build too much anticipation as I did with Avengers

    1. Yeah, I mean what is up with that. I hope at least shot of "dead" Snow with the red apple next to her makes it into the film.

  9. Nice Theron-fest. Would love to see Monster again but it's just such a horrible, draining, spirit-crushingly sad film. Need to see all those ones you watched for the first time too.

LOL at Gosling's face! That's awesome!

    1. I always had weird reaction to Monster - Aileen's voice over are so optimistic and cheerful and she is filled with such determination to chase her dreams I was never depressed by the film. It's a little bit of consolation that in the end she asked to be executed, that's why it was carried on so fast, so at least she got what she wanted in her situation.

  10. Love these posts. They evoke so many thoughts in my head that it's easy to leave out some in the comment lol

Final Prometheus trailer... that's something to be crazy about.

Haha, Gosling mage me laugh. As well as DiCaprio-Oscar joke. And speaking of the latter, The Great Gatsby trailer is awesome, so BazLuhrmann-ish.

    1. He is doing some great movies at the moment!

The internet being expensive lines were hilarious, some of the best moments in the movie.

  13. So awesome to hear The National on Game of Thrones. Last night's episode was crazy, and that was the perfect song to wrap it up.

    1. I nearly fainted in those final minutes, such tension. I also loved the way the song was sung by the soldiers in the beginning scenes of the episode.
