Kill them all. Please.

I do love horror films. All horror films - the superb ones with great atmosphere and gorgeous cinematography, the scary ones with sadistic killers and even the bad ones with stupid teenagers getting massacred on the screen. If there is one thing I object to is making a horror movie, in this case slasher flick, into PG 13 movie. That's just ridiculous. The only reason slasher flicks with teenagers as main characters are entertaining are the creative, gross and ridiculous ways in which moron by moron, they die. Prom Night is not only a bad horror film. It also continues another trend - of doing pointless remakes to the films that absolutely don't need to be remade.

The film follows Donna who couple years back witnessed her entire family being killed by a stalker, her teacher, who became obsessed with her. Since Donna is played by Brittany Snow who is ugly as sin there goes the credibility of the plot right there.Anyways the guy as blind or drunk may be is infatuated with her - why? Who knows. So he thinks it's a good idea to murder her entire family while she hides under bed and watches him do his thing. He gets caught few days later in his apartment (!), confesses (!), the jury obviously finds him insane which the lead detective can't believe in (!) and he is sentenced for life. He escapes the prison through the ceiling, apparently (!), and the lead detective finds out about his escape 3 days later (!). Yeah, that is fine script right there.
In the meantime, three years after the tragedy, Donna is having nightmares and popping pills which doesn't stop her from being excited about one of the most moronic traditions in existance - the high school prom. After few sequences that promptly brought MTV reality shows to my mind, her and her plastic friends and their plastic boyfriends arrive to the hotel in a limo to dance, kiss and enjoy being stupid together. And the killer - you guessed it. He is in the hotel too. With new brilliant plan - to kill off Donna's friends. You know. To make her love him.

I'll give this to the movie - it's so dumb that it's funny. It's really hard to chose who is dumber - the students, especially Donna who actually goes to the room alone during evacuation to recover her scarf - or the police who appear to wait for the killer in the car outside the house with no back up and don't evacuate the stupid students from the hotel immediately. God forbid something were to disturb the prom. I mean that would be actual disaster.
The fun thing about slashers is that the way the antagonist kills the victims is so silly and gross you are both horrified and amused. Here it lacks any finesse, imagination or creativity. All the killer does is slashing the victims' throats and stabbing them. And the flaw is not even that he is only armed with a knife. Remember the Joker's lecture about why he prefers knives than guns? Now this guy would know how to use a knife. The killer from Prom Night really does not. He is more of a butcher this way. Except the butcher actually sounds cool and he is not.

PG 13 rating  is not the only fatal flaw here. There is usually big mystery about who the killer is - we don't know, we keep guessing, and sometimes - most recently in Scream 4 - it delivers very nice twist that makes you go "Woah, I did not see this coming". It's not much, it's a cliche, but it works - it is something memorable from the movie. It's not the victims we remember and not even final girls who are the most famous things in horrors - it's the killers. And the mystery always adds a bit to that fame. Well, in Prom Night we know who the killer is pretty much from the beginning, so there goes the mystery.
As for the characters I couldn't give two shits about those people, which is pretty much how I always feel during those kind of movies. Add to that the fact the only relatively attractive and not completely stupid character from the students group is one of the first ones to go - this makes this thing even worse. And the ending - cliche ending with final scenes that is so abrupt I almost hoped for another cliche - cliffhanger and "he is back" type of the ending.

The script also attempts to add some depth to characters in hilarious ways too - an engagement ring thrown in the frame for example. See for some devices to work you need to care about the people you're watching first. Donna is stupid and annoying, her friends aren't any better. Scream 4 had Kirby, The Cabin in the Woods had Marty. Prom Night has no one we could root for. I did root for Idris Elba's detective but that's purely because as long he was in the film I kept watching for eye candy.
Elba is indeed the only reason to watch this movie. Plus it's really amusing that him and James Ransone who were both in The Wire and on the wrong side of the law are here in this movie, playing cops together. Oh and one more thing - there are two moments which are complete rip off of The Silence of the Lambs. Normally it would be cool. In this movie it's just offensive.

  1. Couldn't agree with you more. I used to loathe the remake of Black Christmas but now kinda enjoy the twisted humour of it. This movie, and the remake of The Fog however = dire.

    1. The humour in horror is always something that makes the worst movies at least entertaining. But this one was only funny because of how dumb it was. Hate it when films like that take themselves seriously.

  2. Wow... I heard about that movie and it came and went... PG-13 is a bad rating for horror movies. It just sucks out the fun in watching horror films.

    1. Absolutely. It's ridiculous to make something like this PG 13, they basically screwed themselves at the verry beginning here.

  3. I'm not a fan of slasher films although can be entertained by a few films. But when someone who enjoys them says its bad, then I'm definitely not checking it out.

Hey, just noticed the new header...cool, did you draw it yourself?

    1. If there is a slasher flck in the cinema I always go in for laughs, but yeah this one is really not worth it.

Thanks! Nah, I couldn't draw to save my life :) Found the pic online and added a little a bit of this and that ^^

  5. Ohhhh! Suck on that, Prom Night!

    Sorry.

Anyway, I enjoyed your review, but this one seems to genuinely suck ass...so I might pass. PG 13 suggests lame violence and no nudity (in a Slasher? Blasphemous) . Double Pass.

    1. Oh no, it should suck on it! :)

Yeah there is no nudity. For me the worst part was Elba didn't take off his shirt or anything :(

  7. Elba aside, I don't think I'll be seeing this. Your review pretty much clinched that. Thanks for the warning. :) But I will watch The Wire eventually.

    1. Unless you are as disturbed as me and in love with Idris...skip it :) The Wire is definetly worth seeing!

  8. Definitely giving it a miss. So many horror remakes I won't even touch out of respect for the original but I've never actually seen Prom Night. Will watch the original rather than this!

    1. The original is so much better. Some remakes are good, like Let me In or The Ring, but this one is just awful.

  9. I totally agree that some movies should not be remade. I haven't seen this particular movie, but my daughter watched it. Her opinion of it is just as low as yours. :-)
