The Best (and Worst) of 2013

Best movie: Gravity
(2. The Wolf of Wall Street 3. Blue is the Warmest Color 4. The Conjuring 5. Mud 6. Her 7. Captain Phillips 8. Blue Jasmine 9. Stoker 10. The Hunt)

Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity is the perfect movie. It's a beautiful, breathtaking spectacle and the most spectacular cinematic experience I've ever had. It's a technical marvel but it has a very strong heart at the center of it - wonderful, highly relatable story of a human being with flaws and imperfections, struggling to survive and achieving just that because of the beauty and the capability of human spirit. In the world filled with so much evil, it's important to make films like that - that show us that humans can achieve wonderful things too. If only by staying alive and appreciating the very miracle of it.

Best actor: Tom Hanks as Richard Phillips in Captain Phillips

You're not just a fisherman! You're not just a fisherman!

(2. Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club, 3.Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street 4. Mads Mikkelsen, The Hunt 5. Christian Bale, American Hustle)

Leonardo DiCaprio is fantastic and delivers his best work in The Wolf of Wall Street. Mikkelsen is incredible in The Hunt McConaughey is nearly as good as he was in Killer Joe in Dallas Buyers Club. But Hanks delivers his career best work as Richard Phillips. And when you say 'career best' about someone with career like Hanks' you should be careful. But when you see the ending to Captain Phillips' - the year's most shocking, beautiful, moving, powerful, intense and cathartic moment, I have a sneaky feeling you'll agree with me.

Best actress: Cate Blanchett as Jasmine in Blue Jasmine
There's only so many traumas a person can withstand until they take to the streets
and start screaming.

(2. Adele Exarchopulous, Blue is the Warmest Color 3. Sandra Bullock, Gravity 4. Vera Farmiga, The Conjuring 5. Rosario Dawson, Trance)

Over the years Cate Blanchett has given us so many wonderful, unforgettable performances. But her shaken, broken, struggling Jasmine is a whole new level of greatness. It's a difficult performance to pull off but Blanchett manages to do that with her usual grace. This is the masterclass of acting.

Best supporting actor: Jonah Hill as Donnie Azoff in The Wolf of Wall Street
Oh my God, the emperor of Fucksville came down from Fucksville to give me a pass! Hey, what are the citizens of Fucksville doing today when their emperor's gone? Is it, is it mayhem? Are people lauding and raping? What are all the little fuckheads doing while you're here?

(2. Jonah Hill, This is the End 3. Matthew Goode, Stoker 4. Daniel Bruhl, Rush 5 .Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club 6. Tony Danza, Don Jon 7. Tom Hiddleston, Thor: The Dark World 8. Bradley Cooper, American Hustle 9. Bill Nighy, About Time)

Hill is a damn good actor. You can talk shit about him, I don't care. He is genuinely funny and even if the jokes in his comedies cross the line, he makes them work. He was my win for This is the End until I saw The Wolf of Wall Street. He was so great. DiCaprio is amazing but Hill never lets him overshadow him. From the little things he does - from the panicked look he has while he is sitting alone in the office after Brad was arrested - to explosion of comedy like his ridiculous scream during Lemmons scene, this is a wonderful performance all the way.

Best supporting actress: Sarah Paulson as Mistress Epps in 12 Years a Slave Sometimes, you have to beat it from them.

(2. Margot Robbie, The Wolf of Wall Street 3. Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine 4. Scarlett Johansson, Don Jon 5.  Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave 6. Nicole Kidman, Stoker 7. Naomie Harris, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom)

This is what usually happens to me in this category. With the exception of Chastain in The Help several years back, Best Supporting Actress is always a choice of mine that biggest awards choose to ignore. And Sarah Paulson layered, nuanced work in 12 Years a Slave deserves all the praise. Months after seeing the movie the loudly applauded performances of Eijofor, Fassbender and Nyong'o are all but gone from my mind while it's Benedict Cumberbatch's wonderful performance and genuinely interesting character and Paulson's broken, bitter woman covering her heartbreak and flaws with cruelty and icy demeanor that stayed with me. Mistress Epps doesn't hate slaves. She doesn't make life unbearable for them. Unless they have the misfortune of her husband being attracted to them. We don't know much of her past but the ferocious jealousy, contempt for her husband and her life and overwhelming bitterness drive her to cruelty, much like fondness for alcohol drives her husband. And her kind of cruelty is much more interesting to watch than his.

  1. Excellent list as always. While I disagree w/ you on Only God Forgives. I do like the choices you've made. And I'm also glad you enjoyed The Wolf of Wall Street. Was that a prosthetic that Jonah Hill used in that party scene where he sees the Duchess?

    1. It was :) I think only Jean showed his dick and that was by accident for a split second :P

      Delete
    2. If they had shown Jean's penis for more than that? What would've happened? Would you have died or pull a Jonah Hill?

      Delete
    3. I wouldn't pull Hill since I'm a lady, so death is more likely :P

  2. Wow such an intense and comprehensive list! I have yet to see some of the films mentioned (hopefully I get to see The Wolf of Wall Street this weekend), but couldn't agree more with Gravity as best movie of the year (and all its other subsequent wins in the other categories).

  3. You don't have to be sneaky about it. I wholeheartedly agree with you on that last scene of Captain Phillips. I mean, Wow! That was really something. He was great throughout that film but compared to that last scene, he was just trading bases. That scene is where he wrapped it up and hit it out of the ballpark. And Blanchett! Loved her as well.

    1. That ending was seriously amazing. The whole film felt like a build up to the freaking explosion of feels that scene was.

  4. Basically agrees on all gravity mention :D
best costume should be for Gatsby, Gatsby i tell you!
This is the end and The Wolf of Wall Street, both Jonah Hill's films, are definitely the most quotable and hilarious this year :D

  5. Love this mega post, love all the love for Gravity, Matthew, and Leo. Honestly, I think Jonah's performance in Wolf of Wall Street is so highly underrated right now. The scene I love the most with him (besides Lemmons) is when Leo passes him the note not to incriminate himself. He shows a hint of betrayal but more upset than anything that his friend has to go through this investigation. Just re-watched This Is The End, and so many lines speak to me as the funniest like Franco's "This is place is a ****ing fortress!!!)
Love Margot Robbie for Best Supporting Actress - I DID NOT know she was 23. Holy crap, talk about grace for such a young star.
Great recap - puts mine to shame, honestly! :D

    1. Thank you!

It really is, he should be getting nominated for supporting everywhere. I thought he was upset because Leo was ratting people out. I mean after all he did give the note to FBI then to save his own ass.

Franco being so ridiculously proud of his own house was hysterical.

It's depressing when young actresses are younger than me:D

    2. I thought it could've been a mix of both, but you might be right :)
I'm a theatre major having not starred or even been an extra in anything, I'm majorly depressed lol

  7. 'Gravity' is my number one as well. Best movie of 2013. Period. I had just about every emotion one could have during that film. I haven't experienced that in a while. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney ARE REAL MOVIE STARS. So many of these one-hit wonders think they are, but they aren't.

I haven't seen 'Only God Forgives' yet, but I keep hearing it's awful. This is so disappointing considering Nicholas and Ryan's prior film, 'Drive,' which was great.

    1. Exactly. Bullock and Clooney are living legends with so much iconic work in their resumes.

Oh God, it's so bad, even worse - it's incredibly boring.

  8. Hahaha great list!!!
I love all the Stoker and About Time love. And I will accept the worst actor to the Gos award because I have no idea what he did last year.

My favourites are probably best chemistry (gahhh Hiddles) and best sex scene *fans herself*

  10. Great, great post. I still need to see a dozen of movies to make my bests of 2013. I think we definitely agree on Captain Phillips, maybe on Gravity and BITWC too, they most likely will make my final best list.

Have an interesting 2014, Sati :)

  11. I am so impatient to see Captain Phillips, Blue Jasmine and Wolf! Absolutely agree that Trance was underrated, and the shocking scene in it (...shaving), YES. I'm so glad you praised This is the End as a very funny film, because I loved it - loved the cum scene and I really love Hill, too.

AHAHAHA - Joker Villain Award: 2. Gravity, Gravity. I'd say "Am I high or did it actually happen?" to the entire second half of Don Jon, though. Finally - Gravity as number 1 - YES. Perfect choice! Love the entire epic post and the laughs and I'll be reading and loving your blog until one of us dies. (If you stop, I'll die, so no problem there.)

    1. Oh these are all wonderful movies. Trance is crazy underrated - like, sure, it was a bit silly and required a lot of suspension of disbelief but it was very well done, well acted and entertaining.

That whole Julianne Moore arc was just bizarre in Don Jon. I was like - is she gonna make him hot chocolate? why are they screwing? O_O so confused.

Don't worry nobody is gonna die :D

  12. Woah... and the most awesome list award goes to Cinematic Corner. Man- I couldn't pull this off even in my dreams. In terms of agreeing, I still haven't seen Wolf (want to watch it on the big screen), Captain, 12 nor Jasmine. I haven't seen the bad ones either so I guess it's balanced.
Your list is epic though.. Man, it seems I haven't seen almost any of these but I'm glad I got to see Stoker! It is that underrated one this year that should get more attention for sure!

My fav trailer is Wolf of Wall Street with Kanye West - Black Skinhead, I like those other ones too you shared.

  15. While our taste was a bit different this year, I still loved Blue, The Conjuring, Her + Phillips from your top 10.

Loved Hanks, just rewatched him in Phillips! Adele Exarchopulous was my #1 peformance of the year, what a shame she will likely miss out on a nom.

Haha omg you have Hill in the top 2 spots, you are a legend!!! He's quickly becoming one of my favourite actors. Margot Robbie <3

It's amazing how movies work, I had a bit of a cry in The Great Gatsby but didn't bat an eyelid in Gravity hahaha. Gotta love diversity!

I LOVE that we have the same #1 movie, wahoo!! We have 5 movies in common amongst the BEST films. As for the worst, I have only seen The Great Gatsby, but to me it's not THAT bad, ahah. I'm curious about The Way Way Back though, that's the only one I'm still curious to see. The rest, not a chance.

This is a massive list, Sati, well-done girl!

  21. A lot of movies on your best movie list I had as well, so pretty much agree there. Hanks was stunning and probably also would be my choice. Have not checked out Blue Jasmine yet, but will soon. Looking forward to see Blanchett's performance (same with Wolf of Wall Street and 12 years a slave).

Shame you did not enjoy Only God Forgives, but it's one of those divisive films. No love for Prisoners? Why didn't you like that one? That funniest scene from This is the End is a good pick, it was quite funny.

Have not seen The Counselor yet, but all the bad reviews make me want to check it out.

The dog scene in Fruitvale Station was a weird one, especially knowing that did not actually happen and was added. It just was unnecessary.

Am shocked by your choices for most boring movie of the year though. Mind probably would be All Is Lost.

    1. I thought Prisoners was a massive Oscar bait with a very clumsy script filled with unbelievable and cheap red herrings.

It really was unnecessary indeed. Such a shameless move to elicit a response from the audience.

I haven't seen All is Lost yet but Smaug bored me almost to tears.

  22. Yusssssssss for the huge amount of Gravity, Jonah Hill and This is the End on this list. All of these were some of the best things of 2013. And a probably even bigger yuss for the little amount of 12 Years a Slave - I do agree with the mentions here though; Cumberbatch, Paulson and Most Over-Praised movie.

  23. Like you, I thought Tom Hanks was brilliant in Captain Philips which is why I'm so angry he was completely ignored in the Best Actor category at the Oscars! I just don't get it.

  27. I think Tom Hanks deserves all the plaudits for Captain Phillips. He was terrific and that is some of the best work he's done. Looking at when the Academy has given him the honor of Best Actor he's played a cancer sufferer and a mentally slow nice-guy named Forrest; maybe Captain Phillips needed to have a mental disorder or suffer from a terminal disease!

    1. Haha :) It's such travesty he is not nominated and Streep scored her 18th nomination for one of her worst performances lately.

  28. Excellent post, Sati! I won't be able to post mine until February. Her doesn't come out until mid Feb, and I have a feeling it's going to be one of my favourites. On a side note, I'm seeing Wolf tomorrow - finally!
Glad Gravity is your favourite film, its still mine too. Love your supporting actress win, I thought Paulson was excellent.
I wasn't that big on Hanks, but it was one of his better performances.
Of course, I love your best actress win. Blanchett was exceptional, one of the best performances I've seen in years.
Glad to see Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn on there too, they were the best part of that shitty film.

    Again, great post!

    1. Oh, yey, hope you liked Wolf!

I love Offerman and Hahn is so funny. I firmly believe they should be in every comedy.

  29. Good stuff here! Love the overall presentation of your awards. Nice to see The Wolf of Wall Street ranked so high, same with This Is the End's # of mentions. You've got me more intrigued about Blue Is the Warmest Color, too.

Also, major props for putting Mama near the very bottom. That was such an awful, awful film.

    1. Blue is the Warmest is very good, but it's quite long. I loved it, but it's divisive film.

      Mama was a freaking disgrace.

  30. Great post! I am always behind, since I wait for things to come out on DVD. I am definitely looking forward to Gravity, Blue Jasmine, and Blue is the Warmest Color.

  31. Hi Sati,

Curious as to what it was about Only God Forgives that you didn't like?

    KW.

    1. Pretty much everything except for music and cinematography. It was boring, ridiculous and I wasn't interested in any of the characters.

    1. Yes, CLEARLY your opinion is the only valid one and those who don't agree must have seen another movie.

  33. I'm surprised you didn't mention Catching Fire for anything really. And no review either! I'd really like to know what you though about it. Even 15 lines would suffice.
