Thoughts on BAFTAs

  • No kidding - the members of BAFTA must have dropped lemmons before voting.
  • So much insane shit happened - Abdi won supporting, Chiwetel won leading, Gravity won so many awards and then the main prize went to 12 Years a Slave...

  • Well, here is some interesting stuff that happened:
  • Brad Pitt brought Angelina Jolie with him and my God, she looks awful. She looks like she may break. I think someone should force feed her burgers and fries.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio was pretty happy, he even blew a kiss to the camera, which is an annual BAFTA tradition (last year it was she I don't speak of, the year before - Brad Pitt), then he got on stage to present Best Supporting actress aka deliver some awful news to which I say this. Then he lost and stopped smiling so much but he gave Chiwetel a standing ovation which was very classy.
  • Tom Hanks is such a good sport. He was snubbed in a major way at the Oscar nominations but he keeps showing up to ceremonies and being super lovely.
  • I still think Lupita Nyong'o is winning the Oscar. The alternative is just too horrible. Sure, the Academy members occasionally do something stupid and they lack good taste very often, but they never do something straight up despicable.
  • Abdi and Chiwetel, especially the latter got a thunderous applause from the audience. But Mathew only wasn't nominated here because not enough of the voters saw his movie. He has the Globe, the Critics Choice and SAG. And most importantly I am rooting for him and I'm summoning all the cosmic energy I can. YOU GO GET THAT OSCAR, MAN!!!!

  • I think Leo is great. I think he is a very nice guy, high fiving people after seeing nice pair of tits aside. I think he will win one day. But 2nd of March 2014 is not that day.
  • People keep bitching about Gravity winning British Film. This is BAFTA. Something crazy happens every year. At least Gravity deserves to win awards...
  • ...unlike American Hustle which actually won script. What was American Hustle's script? A piece of toilet paper? A Tissue? Hamsterface's line of doritos she arranged to spell few words?
  • The beards make come back - last year Affleck and Clooney rocked the look and this year it was Fassbender (who starts to look like the Devil by the way) and Chiwetel:
  • Stephen Fry is such a classy host. But I did adore that he corrected O.Russell's poor grammar.
  • At first I thought none of my boys were there (Fassbender looked like shit in The Counselor so he is on probation) and then Michael Sheen appeared. I was so happy.
  • Cate Blanchett dedicated her award to Philip Seymour Hoffman:
  • This year the fellowship was given to Helen Mirren. Prince William was there again to give the award. I wasn't a fan of Mirren's speech. Also few years back Vanessa Redgrave almost knelt before the Prince which was such a lovely moment.
  • I think it's so weird how Gravity is winning all those awards yet 12 Years a Slave wins Best Picture. Are people too scared to award something else than the movie about slavery?

    1. Best opening to a post ever with that Leo GIF hahah

I'm actually really glad Gravity won so many awards - I think it really deserves them in all the technical categories and I'd love to see a balance of awards between Gravity and 12 Years - both films are equally deserving in my eyes.
And I think there are some good reasons as to why Gravity won Best British Film - Cuaron said himself that it was pretty much made in its entirety in Britain so even though the actors were American and the director Mexican, it has a British base to it (which I'm proud of hahah)

      Lovely post as always :)

      1. Gravity is my fav out of last years' movies so I'm glad too :) I have no problem with Gravity being recognized as British film but as usual there was plenty of hysterics on twitter :)

    2. Good commentary, Sati.

I didn't think any of the BAFTAs were terribly surprising. Just as I don't know that any of the Oscars will be terribly surprising.

      1. I was shocked and not in a good way they awarded Jennifer. And so much Hustle love. Eh.

    3. I was a pretty funny ceremony and everybody seemed so happy. Hanks is my favourite person, his reaction to Abdi winning was so sweet! And then Abdi is on stage and goes like "I see you", it was the my favourite moment of the night.

There must be some obscure brilliance to American Hustle's script that none of us can see. It's like a myth by now. I don't mind 12 Years a Slave winning I mean, it's a "good movie", you know? Like there's quality to it, it was well done. It just lacked that special something that makes me love a film. But who could be mad at Gravity winning...???

      1. They are so lovely together, they were both on Conan not while ago and they had such cute stories about each other.

I'm starting to think maybe they got people high on Academy screenings of Hustle. I love Gravity but as for 12YaS I wasn't a big fan of writing and directing.

    4. The BAFTAs are always one of my favourite award ceremonies to actually watch. I feel like they get more things right there than other awardy people. Plus, Stephen Fry.

      1. For me it's always the most shocking ceremony. I love that Fry hosts so often, he is amazing.

    5. Still scratching my head about Jennifer Lawrence. I think I do like her as an actress a bit more than you but there is no way she should be winning awards for her decent but showy performance in "American Hustle". And when you put the performance next to Nyong'o, which do you think we will still be talking about ten years down the road. Not JL's.

      1. it's such a gross popularity contest, this year it truly is ridiculous. i wouldn't even nominate her.

    6. OMG that Leo gif! That's perfect. If he can't win an Oscar for playing a character that is somewhat out of his comfort zone, I don't know if he ever will win one. (Besides the honorary)

    7. I had almost forgotten about the funny kid in that Aniston movie.. rising star? Meh, I was not thrilled. I wasn't even thrilled about the whole show, I don't know.. maybe I would more invested in these awards if I was able to be a proper fangirl but apparently, I am not.

Still, team Matty for Best Actor!!

      1. Ah yeah, he was quite adorable on stage. I guess more people saw Millers than 12YaS.

        YEY TEAM MATTY!

    8. Love this (your commentary). Such bitchy fun! DiCaprio took a slug to his Oscar hopes with his loss here, but he's still comfortably in #2, me thinks. Ejiofor just doesn't feel like an Oscar winner, and his film has dwindling passion. I predicted a JLaw win here, but I have a feeling Lupita is still taking the Oscar.

      Seydoux looked beautiful!!!

      1. Haha, thank you :P I really don't think he actually is #2, it seems to me it's people's wishful thinking rather than reality, but I'm probably wrong :)

Lea looked great indeed, love her new hair color.

    9. Oh la-la.... Me want Lea...

Leo is fucking cool. I want him to win though it might take a while. I would like to party with.

I know, you don't like J-Law. How much would you pay to see Scarlett Johansson kick her ass?

    11. Sati-- Great coverage of the BAFTA's. Leo will win eventually, but it's McConahughey's year. Although it looks like Chiwetel won this round. But I think most of the actors in the best category are perfectly deserving. Not like the best supporting actress category. Please don't let Jlaw win the Oscar, please don't let Jlaw win the Oscar. No more Uncle. Jlaw has two different faces (smiley face and smelled something funny face). That's it. That's her range.

      1. Thanks! I think Lawrence can be very good - like in Winter's Bone - but her pathetic personality and general awfulness has reached new heights this season and it's making it impossible for me to tolerate her.

    12. Great recap Sati. I thought the whole show was a dull bore but Stephen Fry at least made the connecting bits somewhat funny. In terms of insanity, I don't think you can get more insane than seeing Tinie Tempah running around the audience rapping - it was cringeworthy - awful start. But then things were pretty predictable from there onward. It does seem strange when the Best Film isn't the best at pretty much every other category - where is the logic in that..? But then again I was pleased to see 12 Years win despite Gravity being a technically superb piece of work.

      1. Thanks! Yeah it's odd, I think 12YaS will be one of those Oscar BP winners with very few other wins.

    13. Great recap, made me feel like I was at the BAFTAs :D I always think Angelina Jolie is way too frail-looking, I'm afraid her twiggy-arms would break if Brad pulled her too hard.

I sort of lost interest in Fassy completely now, too bad Hiddles or Richard weren't at the BAFTAs. I guess I didn't miss too much then. Poor Leo probably thought he'd win that night, but hey cool he still gave a standing ovation to the deserving Chiwetel.

I though Cate was very classy to dedicate her award to Hoffman. Btw, we both agree Lawrence shouldn't have won Best Supporting Actress. What do you think of Hawkins? I've always been rooting for Nyong'O but after seeing Blue Jasmine I was blown away by Hawkins' performance, and of course Blanchett should sweep EVERY SINGLE award!

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. Exactly! Her elbows look like they are as sharp as knives.

Hawkins was very good, better than Lawrence that's for sure. I think Blanchett actually is sweeping every single award :)

    14. I love Stephen Fry as a host. That David O. Russell correction was brilliant!

I think Gravity would've Best Film if it wasn't nominated for Best British Film. Can't wait to see how many Oscars it wins! :)
