The Film Emotion Blogathon

Connor over at Conman at the Movies decided to create his first blogathon. Inspired by Inside Out, the general concept is simple:

1.) Pick five films to represent the five emotions in Inside Out. The criteria for choosing these films is listed below. I would be willing to allow a tie, if you couldn’t decide between two films to best represent one of the emotions.
2.) Write out five paragraphs, (one for each film) talking about the movies and why you chose them.
3.) Post them on your blog (or Tumblr or whatever).
4.) Send me the link by posting it here in the comments.
What I’m looking for are five movies that make YOU feel a certain emotion. Here’s what to look for:
JOY: First of all, you want to pick a movie that makes you happy. The kind of movie that you put on whenever you’re in a bad mood that never fails to lighten your spirits. It can be a family film, a romance, a comedy – as long as there’s a smile on your face by the end credits, it should be fair game.
SADNESS: Now for the movie that made you cry the most. From Bambi to Titanic, there are plenty of tear-jerker movies out there. These are movies where you gravitate towards the main characters and really don’t want to see anything bad happen to them. Maybe a character dies, maybe the guy doesn’t get the girl, but your eyes should be pretty watery by the film’s end.
FEAR: This is the movie that gave you the most nightmares. Pretty self explanatory. There are plenty of classic horror movies to choose from, but it doesn’t have to be an out-and-out horror film. If the movie’s about a more subtle kind of fear, or if the movie just has a creepy atmosphere, that should work. Whether blunt or subtle, this is the movie that scares the **** out of you
ANGER: This is a movie that you flat out hated. Not a movie that was dull or boring, but a movie that just fills you up with rage just thinking about it. Maybe it’s a movie made by a certain director that had so much potential, maybe it’s an adaptation or a sequel that just didn’t do the original justice. It could also be a movie where your anger isn’t directed at the movie, but at the characters. Ever wanted to scream at movie characters for making such incredibly stupid decisions?
DISGUST: This last one is a bit tricky, I’ll let you interpret it the way you want. It could be a horror film with a lot of really awful imagery that you don’t want to look at, it could be a comedy with a bunch of gross-out humor that you can barely listen to. It could even be a movie that you like, but your disgust comes towards the basic premise in a grander sense, like being disgusted by what you see in 12 Years A Slave or Schindler’s List. Either way, this film should make you cringe.
Here are my choices:

JOY: Notting Hill

This is such a pleasant movie. Not only is it a charming love story, I love how sweet and caring Will's family and friends are. There are also very enduring interactions between supporting characters, including Will's handicapped friend and her husband and the legendary Spike and Will's sister. It's such a lovely, fun film.

SADNESS: This is 40

It made me sad that Mann and Rudd's character had passion and chemistry in Knocked Up but here it was all so...difficult. Oh God. You find your perfect guy and then what? Life happens, kids happen. Is it all just heading to routine, cheating or death? That's depressing.

FEAR: Repulsion

Yeah I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I fear I may lose it completely like the heroine of this one did.

ANGER: Brokeback Mountain

It makes me so fucking angry that even today, in this day and age there is still so much ignorance, persecution and hatred towards what is essentially the most incredible thing - love.

DISGUST: Project Nim

"Human" race is a disease killing this planet.

  1. Seems very interesting blogathon. I'd love to do that, if I find some time.

Glad to see Notting Hill here, I've been loving this film growing up, mostly because of Julia Roberts though.

Brokeback Mountain is a good choice, I'd probably choose that one too.

  2. Great choices.

LOL, I hate to break it to you, but This is 40 is VERY accurate.

    1. I feel bad for people for whom this was accurate. But no movie contains universal truth about every single relationship out there.

    2. I don't feel bad. It's a product of life. I've been there, done that, know exactly what it's getting at. It happens, but I felt that This is 40 really showed how those things are workable and don't have to be 'the end'. Marriage/relationships all have ups and downs, but we can't allow them to defeat us.

And no, no truth is universal in film world, but the principles, no matter how exaggerated, were pretty spot on.

    3. Drew, seriously, how would you know whether This is 40 is accurate? You're only 30. :-P Just kidding. I haven't seen the movie, but now I am curious.

    4. Yep, I'm with Drew. But don't worry, I have a little more credibility than he does.

      I'm 35.

  3. Great choices! I am right there with you on Brokeback Mountain. So much needless suffering just because society can't move past vicious homophobia.

  5. Quite a sad idea indeed: the worst thing is being bored from life with the person you had imagined it to be perfect. Something to be feared as well.

    1. That's why I think marriages are too common. People should stay together only if it makes them happy, not force themselves to do it.

  6. Great choices here. I would probably choose Brokeback for Anger as well. I love that you chose Project Nim for Disgust, I feel like no one really talks about that movie anymore. A shame, because I really enjoyed it.

  8. Love your logic for picking This is 40 and Brokeback Mountain. That just makes perfect sense. Sadly, I haven't seen any of your other picks. Guess I have work to do.

    1. Project Nin is infuriating, but I highly recommend the two others :)

  9. I just adore your choices for fear and anger.

  10. Great choices! Your choice for Anger is my favorite. I haven't seen Project Nim, but I've heard about it. That sort of thing drives me nuts, and chimps freak me out on top of it. Don't raise a wild animal like a human, come on people.

    1. Thank you! That film is so frustrating. The people in it were so irresponsible it was actually difficult to watch

  11. Oh I love Notting Hill, it is a very joyful movie. Repulsion looks pretty darn scary to me from what I've read. I haven't seen This is 40 but I am 40 and married w/ no kids and I do love being married. My hubby is my best friend and every day I thank God I met him, so marriage isn't all bad by any means :D

  12. Sorry, can't tell if my comment went through.
We've put up our picks as well.
Particularly love the Notting Hill choice.

  13. I think Notting Hill is a lovely choice, as the relationships in that film are impossibly sweet and endearing. Brokeback is yet another good call, as being intolerant of someone else's TOTALLY PRIVATE BUSINESS isn't the concern of anyone else, and the notion that anyone could hate someone for loving is f--king madness.

I have never seen Project Nim. It appears I probably shouldn't.

    Great post!

    1. Thank you! I think Brokeback is one of the best movies ever made but it's just beyond me the kind of hatred that has been going on for hundreds of years now because of something so private and harmless.
