Jason Momoa Appreciation

Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa
1 August 1979 (Honolulu, Hawaii, USA)<

I think a man needs to be a man. To hold a woman the way she wants to be held. Just do whatever your woman wants, and you'll be fine.

Today is a lovely day. It's 39th birthday of the God who walks among men. Our Aquaman. Our Khal Drogo. Jason Momoa.

Jason is the son of Coni Lemke, a photographer, and Joseph Momoa, a painter (let's pause to applaud his parents!). His father is of Hawaiian descent and his mother is of mostly German ancestry. Jason was raised in Norwalk, Iowa, by his mother. After high school, he moved to Hawaii, where he landed a his first lead role - in the TV series Baywatch.

When the show ended, he spent the next couple of years traveling around the world. In 2001, he moved to Los Angeles, where he continued to pursue an acting career. In 2004 he was cast in the TV series Stargate: Atlantis. In 2010, he had his breakout role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, gaining fangirls all over the world. Then Jason was cast in titular role in Conan, and then landed the role of Aquaman - he played the role in cameo in BvS, then reprised it in Justice League last year and this year he is leading his own solo film which you all better go see in theaters or so help me God.

Jason has a production company, Pride of Gypsies. He has directed a couple of short films  and a feature film - Road to Paloma in 2014. He is currently working on his next movie. Jason lives with his wife Lisa Bonet, with whom he has two children, Lola, 11, and Nakoa-Wolf, 10.

Jason is someone I'm a huge fangirl of (in other breaking news - the sky is blue!). Not only do I think he has an amazing charisma and screen presence and he should be a major star because he has this incredible spark a true movie starts has, but I also really admire him. He is so kind to his fans and co-stars, so full of life and joy. He lives his life to the fullest which you instantly realize even if you only browse his instagram for few moments. He is a true inspiration. I also have a huge amount of respect for him for the subject matter of his first feature film and the fact this is what he chose as the story he wanted to make a movie about. He wanted to shine the light on the horrible things happening to the women in the world.

Jason has a number of scars - a result of being brutally attacked years ago. On November 15, 2008, he was attacked with a broken beer glass in West Hollywood, California. According to an AP news article, 140 stitches and subsequent reconstructive surgery were required. This was while his wife was eight months pregnant with their second child.

He has been through something so traumatic and yet you would never know from his behavior. He is always smiling and making others smile. In spite of not being the part of the main cast of Game of Thrones since season 1, Jason still roots for his Khaleesi and parties with the cast. And he is always speaking so highly of the people he worked with. He has great sense of humor, even though it goes without saying, really - RIP Amber Heard's books.

Jason's dream is to host Saturday Night Live and I can only hope that this is going to happen during Aquaman promo tour in December. He is taking so much pride in his work and always giving his best in his performances. It really pains me when people don't realize the extent his talent, only having seen a handful of his films. In truth he is very skilled in comedy and I think he would do well in any role. I'm really hoping Aquaman does extraordinary well and he gets great offers and only plays roles worthy of him.

And then, since it's bizarrely proper and decent here today, let's just share this trivia which never ever fails to make me laugh - In Polynesian, the word "momoa" means dry.

Well, that's just...ironic.

  3. Awesome tribute! I can't believe he's only 39 years old. He looks at least in his early to mid thirties.

(let's pause to applaud his parents!) lol That took me a full minute to understand the innuendo. XD

    OOOH, WOW. Those Baywatch photos.

That comic con joke is one of the few good ones Chris Hardwick has ever made.
I can't believe someone would attack him like that.

With Aquaman coming out in December, this is going to be one of the best birthday months ever. *crossing my fingers he hosts SNL*

"I think a man needs to be a man. To hold a woman the way she wants to be held. Just do whatever your woman wants, and you'll be fine." - my breakfast fell out of my mouth.

  4. This dude is exactly six weeks older than I am. SIX WEEKS. I probably bumped into him in Hawai'i when we were kids, as there's only like a hundred people on each island at a time. Just kidding.

    It's more like fifty.

This guy seems like he's living his life right. I'm totally with you: I hope he breaks out BIG TIME. Let's get this gigantic man into some (intentional) comedies ASAP. I mean, I can only watch Wolves so many times.

  7. What?! He was not raised in Hawaii?

I haven't seen most of the films you mentioned, but Braven was pretty good and I loved his performance.

    Great tribute!

  9. His performance in GoT will forever remain my favourite. It's my favourite season of the show too, just because I love Khal Drogo's and Khaleesis storyline the most. It's the kind of relationship I love to read about, and I wish the show showcased their dynamic even more.

The flashback scene somewhere later in the show, where Khaleesi sees him and their child... oh boy.. I mean.. that broke me!

I didn't really realise Jason hasn't been around for that long.. it feels like I've known of him forever. :D
