Visual Parallels: A Simple Favour + Gone Girl

David Fincher's Gone Girl is one of my all time favorite movies. And then last year we had the unexpected pleasure of witnessing Paul Feig's wickedly delightful A Simple Favour. These films have many similar elements so it was very easy to come up with that pair for Visual Parallels. We have a cunning, beautiful woman who decides to make a life for her husband difficult, we have a sweet, naive character who unknowingly helps her with her plot, we have a disturbing murder sequence and we have worrisome past of our cunning villain revealed.

Both films have wonderful performances - Rosamund Pike is brilliant as Amazing Amy and Blake Lively truly shines as Emily. While Gone Girl is a pure thriller, A Simple Favour is both a mystery and a comedy. And both films are insanely entertaining and rewatchable. Here are the similarities I noticed.

  2. yes! I definitely got a Gone Girl vibe from A Simple Favor but I loved both movies. The end of Gone Girl still infuriates me, but it was brilliant. great parallels!

  4. Really great parallels here. I haven't seen Gone Girl in a while so I keep looking at your post thinking okay who was more disturbing (disturbed?) of the two? I think I'd give the edge to Amy. Emily seemed, at least with her sister, more conflicted and emotional than Amy was. Great characters none the less!

  9. Well spotted comparisons! I know both use unreliable narrators but I haven't seen A Simple Favour-I heard the movie is an improvement on the book.

  12. For real, sometimes I forgot what movie was on what side - that's insane! I need a rewatch on Gone Girl asap, as I forget how good that movie is (but I never forgot how hot Pike is, my goodness).

Oh, and much appreciation for some of those Kendrick stills. Yowza.

    1. Thank you so much! And Gone Girl should be rewatched all the time, especially since Fincher is torturing us and there is no new movie from him in sight :/

  15. still.... you seriously must have a superhuman memory! I'd never be able to do this something like this, and if I did and knew the movies, it'd still take me days!!

I'm going to re-watch Gone Girl, I can't believe I haven't watched it again yet.

(oh and another 'PS', i meant to ask you when you did the captain marvel sound track thing, I used to a thing called 'Monday at the Musak' but stopped because of my health. I am feeling a lot better these days, let me know if you'd like to pick a soundtrack each fortnight or month, I reckon that'd be cool.

    Just an idea :)

    1. What is that? You mean a segment on your website?

    2. sorry for the uber late reply, computer problems and again health issues.

Yeah I had a sort of segment that I'd do on Mondays, I did Arrival and Ex Machina I think, It Follows, I actually had Nat from writerlovesmovies write about that amazing Under the Skin score.

I also did Inside Llewelyn Davis. I was doing this nearly four year ago, when I was posting much more regularly. I'm finally back on my feet mentally after trying medication after medication, and finally have the right med. Yay!

I'm feelin' good now and if you'd like, it'd be suuuuuper cool if say we both agree on an OST and then both write our thoughts about it (while trying to get some vids in there that won't be pulled down). We can post it on here since you actually have an audience.

Just a thought. After reading this blog for so so long its clear to me that you like your soundtracks! =]

    3. oh I forgot to paste an example. I rant waaaaay too much in this one, but you kinda get the point if you read it all. I'd LOVE to hear your honest thoughts.

    5. No worries! Perhaps we could both write about the soundtrack from 'Us'

  16. YAAS! LOVE IT!

Scrolled through it when it was posted but of course I suck at commenting.
Anyway, I was so surprised about A Simple Favour. It was so good, and I expected nothing, because there was almost no buzz around it, and I feel like there should have been.

These posts are brilliant as always. Love them, would love more of them! :D

This makes me want to see both films again.
