10 best moments in John Wick films

Action movies are usually looked down on. Even a franchise as successful as The Fast and the Furious is seen like a lesser movie, because it's light on plot and heavy on explosions, shootouts and car chases. But what if there was an action franchise that included the scenes of shootouts and car chases so well made, done with such creativity and visual splendor, not only you wouldn't miss the complex and intricate plot but you would be happy simply watching those action scenes for hours?

That's John Wick franchise.

While it's true those films aren't going to win any awards for the script, the action sequences in them are not only astonishing but extremely rewatchble. The thought behind them, the choreography and the execution of those scenes - especially the beautiful cinematography and fantastic music that accompanies them - is insane. And it's always fun to watch Keanu Reeves take down bad guys.

There are so many amazing scenes in the three films that the book scene from the newest one didn't even make the cut! It was hard to narrow it down just to 10, but here we go, here are my favorite action moments in the franchise so far:

10. Home Invasion (John Wick)
The first time we see John in action is when some dumb as fuck goons that are about to die are sent to kill him and they invade his home. What follows is an amazing scene filled with insane choreography where John takes them down, one by one.

9. Church / Parking Lot (John Wick)
That moment when John stops firing the big gun and takes out the hand gun? That's when I saw God.

8. Quiet Shootout / Subway (Chapter 2)
The moment when John and Cassian walk through the corridor, and without anyone noticing, continue to shoot at each other is just so goddamn cool.

7. The Horse (Chapter 3)
It is actually Keanu riding that horse. Like a knight. In a suit.

Before that chase happens he uses the horses' hind legs to kick the bad guys, which was just such a brilliant and hilarious moment in the movie.

6. The Belt (Chapter 3)
I don't know who is responsible for this man taking off his belt twice in the same movie but I wanna thank them and also shout at the. Because some things are just too sexy. And Keanu Reeves taking off his belt and proceeding to fight with it is exactly that.

5. Teaming Up (Chapter 3)
It's impossible to upstage John but Sofia yelling the commands and her dogs going for the opponents' balls nearly did that. One of them even climbs up the wall. Insanity!

4. Knives and Hatchet (Chapter 3)
Close to the beginning of the film John finds himself unarmed. Thankfully, there are dozens of weapons hidden in glass behind him, since let's face it, NYC is filled with resources John can use to move around and kill people with. John gets his hands on a lot of knives and a hatchet. The moment where he throws the latter at a guy from across the room is one of the year's funniest moments.

3. The Pencil (Chapter 2)
We heard about John killing people with a pencil but we all assumed that it was just a legend. Well, nope. He can actually do THAT.

2. The Club / Slow Kill (John Wick)
John making his way through the club to get to Theon Greyjoy is an amazing sequence, including some of the best music in all three films. There's John intensely staring into the eyes of a dude he is killing as Kaleida's Think plays in the background and I saw that moment about 20 times. Don't judge me, he is hot. And then we have him shooting a guy in the head while he is locking eyes with the man he wants dead the most. And then he makes his way out of the club, shooting, and fighting in a way that I cannot even accurately describe.

1. Winter at the Continental (Chapter 3)
The standout sequence in Chapter 3 which blends action and humor most smoothly in the franchise yet has John and Charon fight the forces of The High Table sent to kill them all. What's tricky is that they are wearing special armor so it takes more bullets than usual to take them down. And the scenes of glorious mayhem, which bring the hallway shootout from The Matrix to mind, cut back and forth between the shooting and Winston and the dog, chilling inside the vault which harbors more guns. The whole scene is set to Vivaldi's Winter, the glorious mix of which is on the soundtrack. And it all looks absolutely incredible.

  1. The brilliant thing about this franchise is you could have 10 different scenes and the list would be just as good. The only small disagreement I have is that I would say Sofia and the dogs totally upstage John in that scene. That was straight nuts. Great post!

    1. Nah, for me he is always #1, Sofia needed those dogs, John would be fine on his own :)

    2. Oh, he's definitely good all alone and she DEFINITELY needed those dogs. I just found myself watching them more than him during that time.

  2. This is such a nice list!

You know, for me, the book kill in Chapter 3 would be on this list. I found that visually disturbing, in a way that it was ugly yet beautiful. Though I do admit, I hardly remember the first two films that well, and 3 is just so fresh in my mind, so I can't contribute other scenes. But yeah, the book..

Also, just want to comment on how awesome you are. Like, seriously, you work insane hours, watch so many movies, keep our Twitter feed entertaining and interesting, comment on other blogs and write cool ass posts on your own - you ARE the John Wick of our blogsphere! And I appreciate this so much, and I'm sure others feel the same way! Thank you! You rock!

    1. Thank you!

Oh yeah I only remember those so well because I rewatch them continuously, it's a sickness really :D The book scene was so good, especially the sound design, you could practically feel it!

Owww that is so sweet of you to say! I mostly only watch films on weekends but I have to take breaks from doing my job in the office or else I'll go insane and thank God that's enough to be active on twitter and your blogs and it's also enjoyable way to spend my free time. But if Keanu starts dating me, which I think he should, I will be absent :D

    2. Well, I will miss you dearly if you sweep Keanu off his feet and you guys start dating. It will be a great loss for us but if anyone deserves it, it's you! :D

  3. I've only seen the first one but I love the gifs in this list. Even though I wasn't crazy about part 1, what I appreciated about it is that they took their time staging these fight scenes, and they look fantastic.

    1. It's almost like a dance, the way those shootouts are choreographed. I really hope you watch and like Chapter 2 and 3!

  4. Great list! I agree with Dell - this list could have so many different combinations and it would still be great. I'd love to put the book moment in somewhere, but I'm not quite sure what I'd take out to replace it with.

    1. There are many funny things in these movies, mostly how easily it is for John to get rid of his opponents :) And Ian McShane brings tons of laughs

  7. The John Wick franchise is a true blessing. The horse and belt scenes should be illegal. 😂

    1. I think Keanu was trying to silently murder the audience with INTENSE PLEASURE with those belt scenes. There is no other explanation :)

  8. I agree that the franchise has some of the most if not the most astonishing action sequences ever, always supported by gorgeous cinematography and top notch score, but after a while they become boring for me 😅

Anyway, the knives and hatchet one would be my number one. Second? Keanu riding the horse

  10. Love this list <3

I'm kind of surprised there are so many Chapter 3 scenes. Don't get me wrong, they were done very well, but I felt like they were, either too long, or too brutal. Personally, I liked the Continental night time shooting, from the ground floor, not what happened upstairs.

My favorite scenes overall are from 1 and 2, especially the Quiet Shootout and the House invasion.
