There is a house in New Orleans...Are you ready for American Horror Story: Coven?

It's almost that time of the year again - when we have something creepy and messed up to enjoy each Wednesday - Ryan Murphy's wonderfully spooky, brilliant show American Horror Story, which third season, entitled Coven, premieres on October 9th.

Previous two seasons, Murder House and Asylum were met with positive reactions and the latter with incredible acclaim - it is nominated in 17 categories at this year's Emmy Awards. As entertaining as the show is, it has it's problems, but with some fantastic stories rooted in New Orleans' history and terrific additions to the cast, Coven has a shot at being the best season yet.

As usual everyone is very secretive about the story but we know some things for sure - we know that Jessica Lange's character is named Fiona and she is a powerful witch. She returns to New Orleans from L.A where she was living a very comfortable life, after a young witch is found killed. Fiona has a daughter, Cordelia (the lovely Sarah Paulson) who runs Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. That's right. It's a school for witches.
Left: Jessica Lange, Emma Roberts, Jaime Brewer, Taissa Farmiga and Gabourey Sidibe / Right: Taissa Farmiga
But good old fashioned witchy magic is not the only kind of witchcraft in Coven - if you haven't guessed it from the poster, it's voodoo. Voodoo witches were in New Orleans first and Fiona's ancestors and other witches fled here during the time of Salem witch trials. This is such a cool idea and I really can't wait to see these two different practitioners clash.

As with the other seasons we have a lot of people returning. Sadly, we won't see James Cromwell, Ian McShane or Zachary Quinto but I'm overjoyed the beautiful Alexandra Breckenridge (the sexy maid from season 1) and wonderful Taissa Farmiga are returning. No details were reveled about Breckenridge's character but Farmiga is playing Zoe, one of the girls in school who is a shy and sweet girl. The problem is that if she has sex with someone, that person dies. Whether it's a curse or Teeth kind of a deal is still not known.
On the set - Evan Peters and Emma Roberts, Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga and Jaime Bewer, Frances Conroy
As for the others - Jaime Bewer who played Adelaide in season 1 returns as Nan, who has the power to predict the future. This season newcomers - Gabourey Sidibe and Emma Roberts also play the girls in the school. Sidibe is Queenie, described as "human voodoo doll" and Roberts is Madison, rebellious star of the school. Evan Peters plays a guy who belongs to fraternity that is the coven's enemy. Just like in season 1 his character's romantic interest will be Taissa's character.

Newcomer to the series, Patti Lupone, plays someone who is against the witches, one of the forces that threaten the coven. Danny Huston will star as Fiona's boyfriend. Lily Rabe and Frances Conroy are returning this season but their roles are undisclosed. Dennis O'Hare is going to play the creepy custodian of the school.
Sarah Paulson, Jaime Bewer, Dennis O'Hare
One puzzling and honestly misguided addition is Emma Roberts. Ryan Murphy really doesn't have much control over his love for his actors and in the effect the show spins out of control at times. Nothing gets done without Jessica Lange's approval. I believe in appreciating the actors, but she is his actress and he is her boss - it's his show and Lange probably has more control over the series than he does.

My point is that Murphy adores Evan Peters just as much as Lange and Roberts is his (apparently abusive) girlfriend in real life. So here she is. On the show. Let's just hope her character dies soon. She is a terrible, terrible actress. The fact her name is on the poster and Frances Conroy's is not borders on slander.
Angela Bassett / Jaime Bewer, Gabourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga
But let's just forget about Robers and talk about the most exciting thing - as in the past, we will see characters that actually existed. In season 1 we had Black Dahlia, in season 2 we had Anne Frank, but they were only the guest stars. Here we have two famous women that will hopefully be featured in this entire season.

First one is Marie Leveau, a powerful Voodoo practitioner who lived in New Orleans in nineteenth century. Leveau is beloved by the people to this day and she is considered a saint. Her tomb continues to attract visitors who draw three "x"s (XXX) on its side, in the hopes that Laveau's spirit will grant them a wish - that was addressed in show's marketing already in this teaser. Leveau will be played by Angela Bassett.
First still of Kathy Bates as Madame LaLaurie
But the most exciting addition to the cast and quite fittingly most interesting character is Kathy Bates who will play Delphine LaLaurie. There are not many female serial killers in history, but even if they were, LaLaurie would still be one of the most famous ones among them. Madame LaLaurie was a Louisiana-born socialite and serial killer known for her involvement in the torture and murder of black slaves.

She was wealthy and charming and lived in beautiful house with her husband and two daughters (hopefully Lily Rabe will play one of them). What no one in her social circles knew, was that she had a special room where she was doing unspeakable things to her slaves. Think female Calvin Candie, except 100 times worse and under every one's noses in big town.

One day a fire started and forced the police and the people who came to help to break down the doors to the slave quarters. There they found several of LaLaurie's slaves, chained and wounded, who apparently have been being tortured for months.

LaLaurie mansion
After some time the stories about what was going on started to evolve. In the book Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans (1946) the author wrote about LaLaurie that she had "sadistic appetite [that] seemed never appeased until she had inflicted on one or more of her black servitors some hideous form of torture" and claimed that those who responded to the 1834 fire had found "male slaves, stark naked, chained to the wall, their eyes gouged out, their fingernails pulled off by the roots; others had their joints skinned and festering, great holes in their buttocks where the flesh had been sliced away, their ears hanging by shreds, their lips sewn together ... Intestines were pulled out and knotted around naked waists. There were holes in skulls, where a rough stick had been inserted to stir the brains".

Stories such as that of "human crab" are also very famous - it is claimed LaLaurie had the slave's joints broken and reset so that he would look grotesque and look like a crab when he moved. Another victim had the skin peeled off in circular way and looked like caterpillar. Some claim LaLaurie might have tortured and killed over 100 people.

Those are all speculations since no one knows for sure what really happened. It's a fact that Madame LaLaurie did torture and kill her slaves, but given Ryan Murphy's penchant for all things shocking (remember poor Chloe Sevigny last season?) I'm sure he will use some of the examples found in books written over a century after all of this happened.
Another interesting thing here is the Elizabeth Bathory connection. It is amazing to me how some things as small as who got slapped and for what are so well documented when it comes to things that happened so long ago. I read a book about Bathory once - her servant was brushing her hair and accidentally caused her pain. Bathory slapped the girl so hard the girl's blood landed on her face, hence beginning her obsession with blood. While researching LaLaurie I read that she also slapped her slave when she brushed her hair. What on earth am I talking about? According to EW's article LaLaurie uses slaves' blood as wrinkle cream. Murphy apparently spotted the connection too.

This show has brilliant marketing - in addition to creepy and beautiful posters short teasers are released and they have clues to the actual storyline. The mask that Kathy Bates is holding in the gif above suggest that they will get LaLaurie involved with witchcraft in the show. Satanism, to be exact.

Another thing that promo suggested is that someone is coming back from the dead - the show will yet again be set in different periods of time - 1830's, 1970's and present day. I wouldn't be surprised if either Leveau or LaLaurie or both of them came back in one of the later storylines.

The costumes already look astonishing and so are some of the choices made by Murphy already - especially having haunting cover version of "House of the Rising Sun" played in most of the teasers. I also love the fact they actually shot some stuff in real LaLaurie mansion. Here's a fun fact - it was briefly owned by Nicolas Cage.

One more thing - each season has a creepy, scary monster. Infantata in season 1, Bloody Face in season 2, what about season 3? According to EW the monster is going to be an iconic creature. There seem to be two possibilities - Honey Island Swamp monster or Rougarou.

Either way I'm sure it will be as unique and fun as the rest of the series.

American Horror Story returns with premiere entitled Bitchcraft on Wednesday October 9th on F/X.

  1. Wow coooooool. I have a sick fascination with serial killers and LaLaurie sounds particularly vicious.

I too think this season will be the best yet. Love it when fabulous and crazy mix. Also, what a cast.

I don't particularly mind Roberts. As long as she doesn't ruin the show, I'm fine with it.

    1. I'm sure Bates will steal the show this season :)

For me she will be close to ruining it when she opens her mouth :/ I wish Murphy had cast someone else.

    2. Well so far you have been wrong, wrong wrong, Bates will end up winning an Emmy for this role, she is perfect. Hell, Lange and her are close friends and Lange got Bates on the show. Bates rules, she will steal this season away. We in Nola think Bates portrays Delphine LaLaurie to a T!

    3. Wrong? What the hell are you on about? You do realize the fist line of previous comment is about Bates and the second is not?

Maybe reading with comprehension is a lost art.

  2. Can't wait! I think this will be my favorite season.. and I hope there won't be any aliens or ridiculous story lines this time around!

    Boo Emma Roberts!

    1. Yeah I really hope Murphy thought that through. The Satanic possession and alien storyline solutions in season 2 were beyond lame.

      She is the worst :)

  3. I'm very excited to see Gabourey Sidibe and Kathy Bates perform. I couldn't get into season two, but the teaser trailers for this season look awesome so far!

    Emma Roberts can fuck off.

    1. Yeah Roberts managed to be awful in We're the Millers and she had like the easiest job ever there.

Why didn't you like season 2? It was really dark, though, so I get it.

  5. Didn't Adam Levine of Maroon 5 appear in an episode of this show? I just have very personal beef with that fuckwad. He butchered NIN's "Closer" and we NIN fans got very offended.

    1. He did die rather painfully in the show, if that's any consolation.

    2. He was a guest star in season 2 but he died pretty quickly :P

    3. Good. If I ever meet. I hope to kick him in the nuts or knock him the fuck out and say... "that's for Trent bitch".

    4. He deserves it too :) Closer is sacred.

  7. How could have they picked a song that matches the trailer and the mood of the series so well (The House Of The Rising Sun)? I am totally obsessed with it (the song and what I believe would be the best season yet of this hopefully horrifying and a bit richer of humor story).

  8. The excitement I have for AHS is unreal, all the teasers are fantastic! Love your presentation on Cinematic Corner, especially on this article! Can't wait for October to come and to see just how good this is going to be. Do we have faith? Yeah just a little

    1. I hope it won't have as many storylines as Asylum. Murphy can't handle that much shit and alien story for example...complete disaster.

  9. OMG i just realized that at the end of the sixth promo when they (the three witches) remove their masks you can actually see their masks are all different. The witch in the left look as if it is the woman in the 7th promo where all the needles come out from her, look at her mask - it has needles in it. And look at Madame LaLaurie on the right, the woman that tortured people, her masks looks pretty much of a Satan or some sort of that. I might be just too much into the show, but if there is some connection I am interested to see what will Jessica Lange's character do.

    1. Yeah, yeah - the needle thing is a voodoo priestess, Lalaurie will probably be a satanist and Lange's character is a witch :)
