The scene: After Louis (Brad Pitt) kills little girl named Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) when the thirst overcomes him, Lestat (Tom Cruise) sees the opportunity to create a perfect companion for his innocent hearted friend and another way to manipulate him. He decides to turn Claudia into a vampire, while Louis is present in the room. Louis attempts to stop Lestat but then changes his mind as Lestat starts feeding Claudia his own blood. Louis watches with horror as Claudia suffers and shakes in pain and suddenly she is reborn as a vampire, as her fangs grow and her hair starts to curl. After that she sits up, turns to Louis and Lestat and says "I want some more" referring to blood.
To this day Interview with the Vampire remains one of the best vampire movies ever made. That scene is one of the coolest vampire transformations ever depicted on screen and the image of Claudia's curling hair is unforgettable.

God, I love that scene. And what an impression Kirsten Dunst made at such an early age. She's come a long way from this to Melancholia which I think is her best performance so far.

DeleteYES. Great scene! I love this movie, can't help it. One of the best book to movie adaptations ever, alongside LOTRs. Kristen Dunst is fierce.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's such a faithful adaptation, they only missed one chapter. Obviously that omitted chapter was my favorite from the novel, but I can totally understand why they didn't include it.
DeleteGood scene, I love this movie! It's interesting to see two huge hollywood stars playing vampires... and Dunst, so little, so cute, so talented! I like her, she's cool.
ReplyDeleteThe movie has such a great cast and surprisingly Cruise was really terrific as Lestat, though the film tried a little too hard to make him into horror movie monster halfway through.

DeleteThis is one of my favorite vampire film and though I saw this ages ago, I definitely remember this scene. I think both Cruise and Pitt were fantastic in this film and I'm not even a big fan of either. Pitt's expression as he witnesses Kirsten Dunst's transformation is priceless! Great post, Sati!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I still cannot believe Cruise and Pitt were nominated for Razzie for worst couple, this is nuts! They were both great in the movie, especially Cruise.
DeleteAhah, a Razzie?? That's harsh, I don't think they deserve it! I think even Anne Rice was pleased with the casting and adaptation.
DeleteExactly, I was shocked when I checked awards list on imdb. If anything Cruise deserved some big awards for his work as Lestat.

DeleteUndeniably one of the best past to present modernization of vampires! I recently took a vampire tour in New Orleans (being a tourist in my own city, I know), and there's a significant amount of "vampire history" in the city. I had no clue. Love this movie.

DeleteGreat choice Sati. I lOved this film when I first seen it years ago. It's been a while but I recently got my hands on another copy. Can't wait to get around to it again. Love Cruise as Lestat as well. He doesn't get enough credit for this role.
ReplyDeleteThanks! His Lestat is such a terrific performance, probably my favorite of his along with Vanilla Sky. He totally nailed the part, it was as if Lestat from the novel came to "life" :)

DeleteI had forgotten Kirsten Dunst was in it! I haven't watched Interview with the Vampire in a decade. I remember at the time finding it an entertaining watch, maybe I'll rewatch it for next Halloween!

DeleteI might have seen Dunst in Jumanji before I saw her in this (can't remember now), but I do remember being impressed with this child playing not only a believable adult, be a believable century old creature. I think she got a Golden Globe nomination out of it - not bad for a 10-12 year old.
