Scene of the Week: Lost in Translation

By s. Monday, March 12, 2012 , ,
directed by Sofia Coppola
The Silent Goodbye

The scene: In the memorable and beautiful ending to the movie, Bob, middle aged actor and Charlotte, young woman who met in Tokyo few days before and formed a friendship, say goodbye to each other. Bob catches up with Charlotte on the busy street, to her big happiness and surprise, hugs her and whispers something in her ear, which we never hear but we get the sense it's something reassuring. Then they share a kiss and say "bye". After they walk away in opposite directions they turn around, to catch one last glimpse of each other and walk with a smile on their faces.

  1. BEST ENDING EVER!!!! Plus, it's my all-time favorite movie. I will do a huge 10th anniversary project next year to close the book on that film.

    1. Woah, can't wait! I think it's really one of the best endings ever made.

  2. When someone asked me what it was he whispered to her I said he told her what was in the suitcase in Pulp Fiction, the package in Ronin, and the box in Belle de Jour.

  5. I have to say, I am not a Sofia Coppola fan, but it's been so long since I saw this movie, that I should re-see it soon!

  6. Actually, I know what Bill Murray told Scarlett in the end...

"He'll kill us if he had the chance".

  7. My heart is exploding right now. I love this film, and anything by Sofia Coppola, for that matter.

  8. Great review and it is interesting that you saw a much more happy ending (of sorts) to this one. I found it a bit more ambiguous, but can definitely see the hints that there might be better things ahead for Mavis.

  9. Some wise ass digitally enhanced the sound of this scene a few years back and clearly deduced what Murray says to her. It's out there online but I have no interest in knowing. Great scene!

  10. Most of dialogue is up in the air, can't figure it out. That's the beauty of the moment ( :
I tried to lip-read Bob, maybe he's saying to Charlotte: "tell him the truth, ok"

    1. The only words I heard and I'm not even sure I heard them right were "all right" and "ok". I think it's better not to know, perhaps every one of us can imagine something we would like to hear that would make us smile :)

  11. I adore this, I saw a youtube video with subtitles a while ago stating what he said to her but it totally ruined it for me. I liked the mystery, so I've probably blocked it out for that reason :) one of my favourite films ever, need to see it again!

    1. The mystery factor is really important thing here, I don't think I'd like to know what he said :)

  12. Great scene. A movie of two individuals that are confused and yet latch on to one another and that connection makes all of their problems go away. "More then this...there is nothing". The ending is almost comparative to life itself, sometimes you have to walk away from things you love, you have to make sacrifices you never want to make.
