The Imitation Game

By s. Wednesday, January 28, 2015 , , , , , , , 34 Comments
The subject of greatness comes up during every Oscar season.  It's usually the story of someone who lived in turbulent time and had either a major love affair or contributed to the world in significant way. Those films are usually beautifully shot, scored with great music and feature well known actors who deliver good, often career best work. And they always get criticized for being filled with cliches and that huge Oscar bait sign they should have attached to them.

Foxcatcher tells the story based on real events. John du Pont, eccentric millionaire and wresting enthusiast, invited Olympic gold medalist Mark Schultz to stay on his farm and be part of the wrestling team John coaches. The movie details the complicated personalities of two men, their odd relationship and Mark's older brother Dave care for his brother, as well as the inevitable tragedy that occurred on Foxcatcher farm.

The Best (and Worst) of 2014

    By s. Monday, January 19, 2015 67 Comments
Best movie: Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
    (2. Gone Girl 3. Whiplash 4. Pride 5. Under the Skin 6. Nightcrawler 7. Enemy 8. The Guest 9. Foxcatcher 10. The Skeleton Twins)

I adore that moment when I truly fall in love with a movie that I'm watching. With Birdman it was within first five minutes when Riggan 'makes' the reflector hit the shitty actor in his play. The atmosphere of the film, its astounding visual side, energetic beat of the score, the effortless humor, the wonderful acting - it's all right there. It's not just a movie, it's a wild, surreal, beautiful, breathtaking experience and a great study of the mind of an artist and the challenges he faces in the world. Hell, not just an artist - all of us. Wanting to be someone, to have our dreams come true, to be relevant. What do we want? How can we be happy? How can we be free? Birdman asks all of those questions without ever coming across as preachy. It's just an incredible ride, from start to finish, and the finest movie I've seen in years.

    20th Critics Choice Awards

    By s. Sunday, January 18, 2015 , 28 Comments
  • All right, this year's Critics Choice Awards were not as eventful as last year's. I blame the lack of McConaughey and no awesome fuck ups like malfunction when Bullock won last year which resulted in her 'what the fuck?!' Also can I just say I think it really sucks that some of the actors don't show up because they know they won't win. Getting nominated is still a big deal.

    15 best shots of 2014

    By s. Tuesday, January 13, 2015 , , , , , , , , , , , , , 24 Comments
Welcome to the second Best of 2014 list! There were plenty of movies last year with absolutely stunning cinematography. But this list is a little bit more specific than this. It's about that one perfect image that showed up on screen that I won't be able to ever forget. Whenever thinking of these movies, it's impossible for me not to remember the best shots in them and they just appear in my mind instantly.

Here we go - the first of my end of 2014 lists. I have not seen all noteworthy movies - Wild and A Most Violent Year being the ones that I would probably enjoy the most - but I already completed the lists, seeing how I don't think there are any scenes better than those I chose here. The best shots of 2014 list is next in line, but for now I hope you enjoy my choices here:

    The Interview

    By s. Wednesday, January 7, 2015 , , , , , , , 24 Comments
The thing about me is that I have no problem with crude humor as long as it's funny. And I find Seth Rogen's comedies really funny. This is the End was my favorite comedy last year, while Neighbors tops the list in 2014. Yes, it's vulgar and stupid kind of humor but it works.
