Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

By s. Sunday, February 9, 2020 , , , , , , , 16 Comments

I love Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel and I think they are both wonderful movies about terrific heroines. However, I cannot fully connect with them because, while they kick ass, they are so very noble and kind. Diana grew up on a paradise island, surrounded only by loving and supportive women, and Carol doesn’t fully remember her past, which explains why they aren't pissed off. Because if they knew what we know and experience what we do, they'd be very, very angry.

The Beach Bum

By s. Monday, July 15, 2019 , , , , , , 8 Comments
There are some actors who suit the part they are playing so well you cannot possibly imagine anyone else doing that. It's the case with Jeff Bridges as the Dude. Samuel. L Jackson as Jules Winnfield. Keanu Reeves as Neo. And now Matthew McConaughey's Moondog.

McConaughey, who had his career comeback a while back, had less luck in the last few years appearing in a bunch of movies that were either unsuccessful, underseen or complete box office and critical flops. Just few months ago we watched him in utterly insane Serenity, but even there you gotta admit while the film was an incomprehensible disaster McConauyghey's entertaining performance still made it a lot of fun to watch.

Long Shot

By s. Tuesday, May 7, 2019 , , , , , , , 8 Comments

Long Shot is a sweet, romantic film reminiscent of comedies form 80's and 90's. Of course, given the changes in our society and audience's tastes and sense of the humor (let's face it, for the worse), the comedy genre had to adjust and become, shall we say, less refined. But I can confidently say it's the sweetest movie where someone ejaculates in their own face.

Ant-Man

By s. Sunday, July 26, 2015 , , , , , , , , , 20 Comments
Marvel's reign over what seems to be the entire world - they have been getting our attention and our money for years now - has recently started to become a bit shaky. Age of Ultron, sequel to their most profitable movie yet, Avengers was disappointing. Not financially, of course, but the reception was underwhelming. And who can blame the people who were let down - Ultron repeated the sin of formulaic storyline, bland villain and frankly it was just bizarre. I mean what the hell was up with  the"hey kids, gather around and we will tell you about that time Black Widow's ovaries got removed!" thing?

Spy

By s. Wednesday, July 1, 2015 , , , , , , , 36 Comments
I love Melissa McCarthy. There are plenty of people who find her crude, annoying and unfunny but I'm not one of those people. I am still baffled that there are those out there who actually hated The Heat, which I think is one of the funniest comedies in recent years. And McCarthy's nomination for her wonderful work in Bridesmaids is one of my all time favorite Oscar nominations. To top these two movies would be tough, but that is exactly what Spy managed to do.

The last, glorious flight - deciphering Birdman.

By s. Saturday, February 14, 2015 , , , , , , , , , 29 Comments
Usually when I see a truly great movie that I fell in love with instantly I can review it on the same day, effortlessly. But not with Birdman. It has, quite literally, blown my mind. I was unable to collect my thoughts on it and shape them together into some coherent strain. They just kept bouncing off, running away ....I'm still not exactly clear on how to write this, so perhaps the best way to it is take a clue from the film and let it out in one steady flow.

The Interview

By s. Wednesday, January 7, 2015 , , , , , , , 24 Comments
The thing about me is that I have no problem with crude humor as long as it's funny. And I find Seth Rogen's comedies really funny. This is the End was my favorite comedy last year, while Neighbors tops the list in 2014. Yes, it's vulgar and stupid kind of humor but it works.

Begin Again

By s. Monday, November 3, 2014 , , , , , , , , , 42 Comments
Meet Dan (Mark Ruffalo). Dan's life is not going well at the moment - his marriage collapsed, he can't connect with his teenage daughter, he drinks way too much and he hadn't had a professional success - in his job as a music producer - in 5 years. One evening, after a particularly shitty day, Dan goes to a bar to get drunk. As he is drinking he hears a song. A song sang by a girl named Gretta (Keira Knightley) on the stage. Immediately Dan wants to sing Gretta up. But as things don't go as they planned, the two decide to record a live album in different locations in NYC. As they do that, they start getting closer to each other and finding something that they didn't have in their lives in a long time - joy.

Mac and Kelly are trying to have sex in their dining room. Mac keeps saying how hot it is that they are having sex on a chair. And then he notices that their little baby Stella is staring at them. Kelly points out it's nothing, she is simply seeing shapes. To which Mac replies 'yeah, the shapes that are fucking!'

The Wolf of Wall Street

By s. Wednesday, January 22, 2014 , , , , , , , , 47 Comments
Martin Scorsese's outrageous new film The Wolf Wall Street is the director's return to formula known from films such as Goodfellas and Casino. A story of crime, money and ultimate consequences. Or in this case - perhaps a lack of them?

Blue Jasmine

By s. Monday, January 6, 2014 , , , , , , , , 42 Comments
There is a fairly new pattern in the world. Every two years Woody Allen makes a good movie. Between that his movies are either really, really bad or truly acquired taste. After an unholy abomination that was From Rome with Love, truly one of Allen's worst, comes delightful, mature, insightful and surprisingly dark Blue Jasmine.

American Hustle

By s. Tuesday, December 31, 2013 , , , , , , , , 34 Comments
American Hustle, David O. Russell's follow up to hugely successful Silver Linings Playbook is an entertaining mess. It has moments of brilliance, moments of artistic confusion, scenes that are lovely and scenes that are completely misguided. While the cast is excellent, I'm only convinced of the greatness of one performance. Fortunately for the film, this ensemble's efforts are enough to entertain.

This is the End

By s. Thursday, July 4, 2013 , , , , , , , , 18 Comments
6 friends. One house. A party. A milky way. Apocalypse.

Films about the end of the world are extremely popular in Hollywood lately - we either get big blockbuster movies, comedies or horror films about the subject. Some of those are really good like last year's Cabin in the Woods. And now we have new addition to the list of good end of the world movies - This is the End - hugely entertaining, hilarious comedy that I'm definitely going to rewatch many times.

Frankenweenie

By s. Monday, January 21, 2013 , , , , , , , , , 31 Comments
I remember the day my beloved hamster died. It was terrible - he was my first pet, well, excluding the fishes in aquarium, and though I couldn't walk him and I almost never let him out of his cage, I really loved him. I cried for days. Now I have a beautiful Yorkie, my first dog ever. He is one year old,  I've known him for 10 months and I love him so much - he wiggles his tail and jumps whenever I get back home, he wakes me up in the morning and he brings toys and drops them next to me when he wants to play. He is my friend.

Silver Linings Playbook

By s. Wednesday, January 16, 2013 , , , , , , , , 36 Comments
Silver Linings Playbook is director's David O.Russel follow up to his hugely successful The Fighter (which ended 24-year long history of the Academy snubbing Christian Bale). To be honest I was quite surprised that this director took on to adapt that book - which is essentially a romance story. O.Russel strikes me more of a director who would be interested in more manly subjects like war or boxing - it was only recently that I read about O Russell having a son who suffers from bi-polar disorder and that is what made him took interest in this project. But let me tell you this now - Tiffany, the main female character in Silver Linings, would probably kick any boxer's ass and bring him to tears, just by using her wits and passionate words.

Killer Joe

By s. Tuesday, October 16, 2012 , , , , , , , 48 Comments

It takes a lot to disturb me. For such a horror movie geek like me, it's really difficult to feel genuinely uncomfortable while watching the movie. I've seen so much messed up stuff in films - mostly due to recent popularity of torture porn trend in horror movies - that I'm now almost completely numb to violence and disturbing scenes in movies. But Killer Joe is so superbly acted out and directed there where plenty of times when I felt genuinely uneasy about what I was watching. It's thanks to the story, based on Tracy Letts 1991's play of the same name that Killer Joe is as twisted and messed up as every review of the film says it is.

To Rome with Love

By s. Saturday, October 13, 2012 , , , , , , , 44 Comments

There are certain people working in cinematic world whose decisions puzzle me. One of such decisions is working, working and then working some more when they really don't need to do that - look at composer Alexandre Desplat. For the last few years it has been embarrassing to witness how much he is wasting his talent away. Instead of focusing on quality, he is focusing on quantity. And now look at Woody Allen. He makes one movie a year. And when the movie is as bad as To Rome with Love, I really don't understand the praise he is getting for being so prolific. I for one would much rather have no new movie by Allen this year when the result is that awful.
