The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards

  • The magical journey of Golden Globes night started for me way before the ceremony actually started.

Promote, promote your way to that nomination...

    Hardy in The Revenant
It was such a beautiful time. When you used to get excited about Awards season, while lying to yourself that people who really deserve the recognition are gonna win, or at the very least get nominated. It is no more for me this year.

Tom Hardy, arguably biggest break out star in 2015, who appeared in 5 different films and one popular TV series did not get a single SAG or Golden Globe nomination this year. That is unpleasant. But the behind the scenes stuff and the fact that HFPA nominated both Mad Max and The Revenant for Best Drama, while ignoring Hardy, whose work is integral to those movies' success, is just ugly.

The 72nd Annual Golden Globes Awards

  • Yeah, in case there was doubt, Kevin Spacey is the best.
  • But before we get to that, and the horrible things HFPA has done last night such as:

The 72nd Annual Golden Globe Nominations

    By s. Thursday, December 11, 2014 , 27 Comments
Rosamund Pike, Best Actress in Drama - Gone Girl and Mark Ruffalo, Best Supporting Actor - Foxcatcher
     What did we learn today?

We learned that if your heart is pure (kind of) and you are rooting for the movie (that you haven't even seen yet) and it has your darling Fluffalo in it, amazing things can happen.

Foxcatcher which wasn't even present in most of critics' top 10 and nominations (while Boyhood triumphed, that sound you hear is me vomiting) got a big boost this week with Steve Carell getting both SAG and GG nominations and the film getting Best Picture nomination as well as the inclusion among AFI's top 10 11 of the year. But it did come with a price - apparently where it triumphed, Gone Girl was absent.

But let's focus on what's important - Mark Ruffalo is a double SAG and Golden Globe nominee this year. Oh, yeah!

The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards

    By s. Monday, January 13, 2014 , , 48 Comments

There were few awesome surprises during last night's Golden Globes, my favorite depicted on the above gifset. There was some laughter, lots of drunk people and few glimpses of Fassy. It was fun.

The 71st Annual Golden Globe Nominations

    By s. Thursday, December 12, 2013 , , 24 Comments
Today's Golden Globes nominations were shocking, surprising and above all - they chose people who are hot right now and they really want them to appear on that red carper (Kate Winslet, who I'm told just had a baby, I'm mostly talking about you). There were surprises - Rush nominated for Best Drama, snubs - Oprah Winfrey shockingly absent, sources of joy for many - Greta Gerwig nominated for Frances Ha and potential game changers - Idris Elba nominated for Long Walk to Freedom.

    Thoughts on Golden Globes

    By s. Monday, January 14, 2013 , , 44 Comments

    Red Carpet:
    • Amy Adams looked absolutely beautiful!
    • Why is Megan Fox there? She doesn't matter
    • Michelle Dockery looked pretty except for the dress. What the fuck was that thing?
    • Lena Dunham is disgusting.
    • Bradley Cooper walked in like a boss on red carpet and Jodie Foster pulled him aside to talk to him, damn!
    • Chastain being hyperactive Hathaway-style as she gets out of limo and starts waving around
    • Who the fuck is Julianne Hough?
    • Damn, Hugh Jackman <333

Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln and Les Miserables lead Golden Globe nominations

    By s. Thursday, December 13, 2012 , 32 Comments
Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty
    Anne Hathaway in Les Miserables
Today we found out who the nominees for Golden Globes are and as usual there were some surprises. Let's just forget about TV categories, because as usual they didn't do anything shocking, except for them snubbing American Horror Story (only one nomination - for Jessica Lange). Oh, Girls and Lena Dunham got nominated,  which means she will probably attend the ceremony which will result in me enjoying it a much less than I would without her there. And The Girl got tons of nominations, which is so funny - it just shows how few TV movies are out there and they are literally forced to nominate average ones.

There were many surprising things among nominees - the lack of Johnny Depp, who is nominated for anything he does, the inclusion of Nicole Kidman for The Paperboy, three nominations for Salmon Fishing in Yemen and Richard Gere appearing as if from nowhere. Meryl Streep got in for Hope Springs, because well, how could she not? I'm thrilled to see Emily Blunt, Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway and Nicole Kidman - some of my favorite actresses - nominated. What saddens me is the lack of love for Seven Psychopaths and lack of nomination for Matthew McConaughey for any of his three wonderful performances.

    Here are the nominees:

    Golden Globe Nominations 2011

    By s. Thursday, December 15, 2011 , , 3 Comments
Ryan Gosling in "Ides of March"
    Best Motion Picture - Drama
    The Descendants (2011)
    The Help (2011)
    Hugo (2011)
    The Ides of March (2011)
    Moneyball (2011)
    War Horse (2011)

I'm so happy that someone finally noticed "The Ides of March". You guys know what is even more beautiful? "The Tree of Life" is not nominated! Yes! Finally that boring shell parading as the truth absolute was omitted! What's missing? "Shame".And Harry Potter but I think we all have to face the fact - apparantly boring "Return of the King" can take 11 Academy Awards, but lovely "Deathly Hallows" will only stand a chance in technical categories. I think either "The Descendants" or "The Help" will win, but the former has better chance.
Michelle Williams in "My week with Marilyn"
Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
    The Artist (2011)
    Bridesmaids (2011)
    50/50 (2011)
    Midnight in Paris (2011)
    My Week with Marilyn (2011)

I had absolutely no idea that "My week with Marilyn" will be considered in this category. Good lord, Williams sings few songs and it's a musical? Too bad "Crazy, Stupid, Love" didn't get in, but I'm happy to see "50/50" and "Midnight in Paris" in the race. "The Artist" is winning considering how eccatic the reviews for it are.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
George Clooney for The Descendants (2011)
Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar (2011)
    Michael Fassbender for Shame (2011)
Ryan Gosling for The Ides of March (2011)
    Brad Pitt for Moneyball (2011)

I'm just so happy for Fassy I could die. And Gosling getting nominated for "The Ides of March" instead of "Drive" is a very pleasant surprise, he was excellent there even more so than as a disturbed driver. DiCaprio is from what I gathered nominated because it's DiCaprio. The showdown will probably play out between Pitt and Clooney. Clooney's killing here by the way - he's got noms for movie, director, actor...seeing how he is not winning for movie and directing, I'm betting he will win. But Pitt is the second in the race. Ironically I don't think those performances are even half as good as what Fassbender and Gosling were doing in each of their movies this year.
    Michael Fassbender in "Shame"
