The Best (and Worst) of 2019

Best Movie: Marriage Story

(2. Avengers: Endgame 3. Knives Out 4. Uncut Gems 5. Ready or Not 6. Midsommar 7. The Lighthouse 8. 1917 9. Parasite 10. Fighting with my Family)

2019 brought us many wonderful films and the truth is the first four of my top 10 were so great either one of them would be worthy of the title of the best movie of the year. Curiously, Marriage Story is the only movie out of my top 5 I didn't rewatch. Maybe it's because it's heavier than others but it only makes it more special. The Academy didn't really give it its due but it's the kind of a film that will age very well because it conveys themes and tells a story that is so timeless.

Best Actor:
Adam Driver as Charlie in Marriage Story

(2. Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems 3. Robert Pattinson, The Lighthouse 4. George MacKay, 1917 5. Robert De Niro, The Irishman)

Driver is a tremendous actor. I have never seen a bad performance from him - regardless of the overall quality of the movie he always brings his A game. And his work in Marriage Story is exceptional - he plays a character who isn't someone we should root for or even like - he is selfish, arrogant, he cheated on his wife. But Driver infuses that character with so much humanity and at times even childlike naivete with his belief that things will turn out all right just because he wants them to. It's a beautiful performance, one that makes you laugh and makes you cry.

Best Actress:
Florence Pugh as Dani in Midsommar

(2. Lupita Nyongo, Us 3. Saoirse Ronan, Little Women 4. Samara Weaving, Ready or Not 5. Charlize Theron, Bombshell)

This has been Florence's year and I'm so happy about that. I don't think I ever had one actress take more than one spot on that list. Florence is such a talented, exciting young actress and it's wonderful that she is getting cast left and right these days. She has anchored this manic dream of a movie so brilliantly, flawlessly portraying Dani's isolation, sadness, insecurity and the pain of feeling like she doesn't belong anywhere. Without her, the movie would have collapsed but she instantly makes us care about this lost, lonely person and we feel the terror and the joy along with her. We want her to be all right and in the end we hope that even in the prison she found herself in, the madness will set her free and she finally finds happiness.

Best Supporting Actor:
Bill Hader as Richie Tozier in It: Chapter Two

(2. Daniel Craig, Knives Out 3. Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 4. Shia LaBeouf, Honey Boy 5. Willem Dafoe, The Lighthouse)

It's always the most impressive thing when the actor manages to give an amazing performance in a mess of a movie. I an still stunned by the choices director Andy Muschietti made when it comes to this film, none stranger than using inferior, less dramatic takes when it came to Hader's performance. But even with the insane choices and poor script, Hader managed to create one of the most memorable and moving performances of the year. His Ritchie is heartbreaking and you really feel his pain and loneliness, but Hader also provides the movie (with the help of great James Ransone) with fantastic moments of humor and fun. It's a brilliant performance, one that deserved a much better movie surrounding it.

Best Supporting Actress:
Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat in Doctor Sleep

(2. Florence Pugh, Little Women 3. Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers 4. Laura Dern, Marriage Story 5. Julia Fox, Uncut Gems)

While the movie itself isn't the greatest, I genuinely believe that Ferguson's performance will manage to make it into a cult classic all on its own. Her Rose is pure evil and Ferguson plays her like an addict - addicted to the shine that gives her her life-force, her youth and her high. It's an absolutely delicious performance that makes the movie all around her worth seeing just to witness her. She is so fun to watch and the whole look of the character is incredible - the messy braids, the grunge shirts - the hat is the least of it all. If I were to choose my one favorite cinematic thing in 2019, it would be that performance.

Best Quote: People don't accept mothers who drink too much wine and yell at their child and call him an asshole. I get it. I do it too. We can accept an imperfect dad. Let's face it, the idea of a good father was only invented like 30 years ago. Before that, fathers were expected to be silent and absent and unreliable and selfish, and can all say we want them to be different. But on some basic level, we accept them. We love them for their fallibilities, but people absolutely don't accept those same failings in mothers. We don't accept it structurally and we don't accept it spiritually. Because the basis of our Judeo-Christian whatever is Mary, Mother of Jesus, and she's perfect. She's a virgin who gives birth, unwaveringly supports her child and holds his dead body when he's gone. And the dad isn't there. He didn't even do the fucking. God is in
heaven. God is the father and God didn't show up. So, you have to be perfect, and Charlie can be a fuck up and it doesn't matter. You will always be held to a different, higher standard. And it'sfucked up, but that's the way it isMarriage Story (2. 1. I wasn't expecting Marriage Story to be your #1! Glad to see Driver is the best. He was so robbed. I'm glad you talked about It Chapter 2 quite a bit because I had forgotten a lot of these moments.

Joker and TROS taking as many worst awards as they can is fitting lol

    1. Honestly TROS drops on blu ray in like 2 weeks and I am not sure I can sit thru it again what a mess that movie is

  2. That Laura Dern monologue felt like this year's Cool Girl monologue. Yes.

I agree with 99% of these. especially Poe being the sexiest character... I call it Poe Wars for a reason.

I am forever angry that Ready or Not didn't get more love while it was in the theaters. That movie was amazing.

This was such a fun list to read on otherwise sh*tty Monday.

    1. Thank you! Sorry your Monday wasn't great! *hugs*!

Ready or Not still did good income/budget wise, unlike BoP :/

    2. That's true! Ready or Not performed decently... I just wish it had done better. It seems to have been a word of mouth kind of movie. Still one of my favorites from 2019!

  3. I'm so happy to see Marriage Story as Best Film because it is mine too. And yes to Adam Driver for Best Actor. As for the actress, my favourite was ScarJo in Marriage Story. But I also loved Lupita in Us and Florence in Midsommar.

I love the quotes you picked, especially Marriage Story and Little Women's. I could relate so much to the latter it hurt.

I can't believe you watched Cats more than once. I want to see it myself though (just curious to see how bad it is) so I shouldn't judge haha

  5. Great list and fair picks. It's cool to see some recognition for Rebecca Ferguson in Doctor Sleep. And I wish the award shows had half as much love for Midsommar as you did!

  8. Like every year, I was looking forward to reading your best and worst post.

Rise of Skywalker was watchable but definitely a weak entry in the series. The story was rushed and I think needed a part 2 like Harry Potter's ending. 142 min was not enough.

That's so true about the amazing chemistry in Portrait of a Lady on Fire

  9. Awesome list!

I wasn't a big fan of Marriage Story, but I agree it's timeless and I've gone back to rewatch certain scenes.

I thought Fighting With My Family was going to be Florence's only movie last year, and then she topped her performance with Midsommar and again with Little Women. She's going to have one of those careers where you're excited to see what she does next.

Avengers: Assemble or "I am Iron Man" would be my favorite scene of the year. The Russos really knew how to build those moments.

I really want to give It: Chapter 2 another shot, but I just remember feeling so disappointed in theaters. I don't know if I can. But it had a lot of great details though.

Can I ask what the Matthias Schoenaerts' characters in 2015 award stands for? Is it for characters that always run away from him in movies?

    2. Thanks! I forgot my sister convinced me to see Far From the Maddening Crowd and I almost walked out because Carrey's character turned him down. lol That's a very fitting award.

  10. Dear lord.. where to start. So this list is epic as always! Thank you for putting so much effort into it, I can't imagine linking all these things - bravo!

Secondly, just as Brittani, I'm surprised Marriage Story is first. It's a good first it just.. I think it's the fact that it hurt so much that I can't imagine picking it as first.. even tho my first is also quite the emotional one.

Also surprised Cats didn't get more wins.

Love the love for It 2 even tho that movie was in the end quite bad. Love the love for John Wick 3, what a classy movie! And LOVE the love for Ready or Not, it was the biggest surprise for me from 2019 and I'm so glad I saw it. The ending was magnificent!

Still haven't seen The Lighthouse and every time I read something about it I'm like "WHAT DID THE SEAGULL DO!?!?" Can't wait to watch it tho. And Uncut gems too.

I haven't seen Cats so I'm skipping that ... I don't think it's a coincidence the most hated movie starts with the letter C while there is a deadly virus going around that also starts with a C.

Pugh is so talented! I keep forgetting she was in Fighting With My Family, she is a true chameleon, always so different, always so enjoyable!

The more I think about it, Knives Out was so good. It has a very good "stays with you" quality.. and I just love Chris and his sweater and I'd give him a whole new award for that.

Costumes!! You know who also had great costumes, Dolemite Is My Name.. gorgeous dresses!

What else.. there is definitely a lot of things I forgot to mention but oh yes.. Rose the Hat, best villain for sure! I can just see so many Halloween costumes being inspired by her.. I wish we'd get like a series focusing on Rose the Hat in different times, kind of like a mini-series where we fallow her in a certain time period, maybe the 60's and 70's... and she's like being badass.. a girl can dream.

    And again, AMAzing list!

    1. Linking was easy because my lazy/busy ass doesn't review many things here anymore :)

It's kinda also because good God, how many times can a CBM win here? It's every year lately lol And endgame has some truly awful writing there in some places

I'm surprised too but when there is such shit like Joker and TROS not even Cats can win with that

Oops I almost forgot Dolemite entirely. Good movie, just there was so many better ones in 2019

That would be awesome, there can never be enough of Rebecca!

And also love the fact Cats is rated higher on your list than Rise of Skywalker ;) Ouch. I cannot wait to finally see that one bad or not!

Great list all the way around. You had far better Best Acting picks than the Oscar winners in the end.

  13. I look forward to this every year, such great work! I meant to tell you that I watched Doctor Sleep on your recommendation and I thought Rebecca Ferguson was great. Definitely the best part of that movie. She was so damn evil.
