Saturday TV Special: What We Do in the Shadows

Plot: A look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of three vampires, who've lived together for over 100 years, on Staten Island.
Structure: Every episode focuses on another issue our adorable vampires must face - trying to find food (ideally virgins), dealing with their living conditions (and avoiding a disliked roommate who happens to be an energy vampire), organizing a vampire orgy, dealing with animal control, trying to make sense of zoning committees, fighting with werewolves, and many, many others.
Verdict: This is easily way, way funnier than the movie. While the film was very amusing and clever, this series never fails to deliver the lough out laughs and is so incredibly witty. Also the characters are very likable in spite of being blood - or energy - thirsty vampires, which is quite an accomplishment.

Saturday TV Special: 20 best moments in Breaking Bad

We are now only 6 days away from the follow up to one of the most acclaimed TV series of all time, Breaking Bad. I wasn't a big fan of finale, which I wrote about at length after it aired. The rewatch did make me appreciate it a bit more but it fixed none of its many problems. So for me this is like another chance to give the series the proper ending. There's the risk they will mess it up - especially since the shot of Jesse laughing as he was driving away was just so, so perfect - but to quote someone else on letterboxd - I hope Vince Gilligan won't fuck us on this.

Here we are! After long anticipation season 3 of Stranger Things is finally available on Netflix. I know not everyone watched it yet - the hell are you people doing having a life instead of watching it?! - so I will cover the heavy spoilers (highlight to read). Here are my thoughts on this season:

Saturday TV Special - True Detective

Plot: In 2012, Louisiana State, Police Detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) are brought in to revisit a homicide case they worked in 1995. As the inquiry unfolds in present day through separate interrogations, the two former detectives narrate the story of their investigation, reopening unhealed wounds, and drawing into question their supposed solving of a bizarre ritualistic murder in 1995. The timelines braid and converge in 2012 as each man is pulled back into a world they believed they'd left behind. In learning about each other and their killer, it becomes clear that darkness lives on both sides of the law.
Structure: Each episode shows the main investigation from 1995 as well as the progression of Rust and Martin's relationship. Those scenes intertwine with the interviews they give in 2012 as they look back on the case and the time they spent working together.
Verdict: It's hard to judge a show only on three episodes but there are some comparing its quality to that of Breaking Bad's already. Hell, the ending to the last episode was something that would be an ordinary sight in BrBa, but here it was raised to something nightmarish. The pairing of McConaughey and Harrelson is already something that should get you interested and the show is gripping, mysterious and thought-provoking. This season contains 8 episodes and the next one will reportedly have different cast and different case, anthology style.

There is a house in New Orleans...Are you ready for American Horror Story: Coven?

It's almost that time of the year again - when we have something creepy and messed up to enjoy each Wednesday - Ryan Murphy's wonderfully spooky, brilliant show American Horror Story, which third season, entitled Coven, premieres on October 9th.

Previous two seasons, Murder House and Asylum were met with positive reactions and the latter with incredible acclaim - it is nominated in 17 categories at this year's Emmy Awards. As entertaining as the show is, it has it's problems, but with some fantastic stories rooted in New Orleans' history and terrific additions to the cast, Coven has a shot at being the best season yet.

Saturday TV Special: Hannibal

Plot: The series is based on characters and elements appearing in the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris and focuses on the budding relationship between FBI special investigator Will Graham who has unique ability to emphasize with serial killers in a very unusual way and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist destined to become Graham's most cunning enemy.

10 TV actresses that deserve better careers

Underrated actresses. I bet every one of you could name at least 5 women who for you fit that category. But as I'm currently rewatching Rome and I'm, practically at any given month, rewatching Game of Thrones, I decided to create a sub-category - underrated TV actresses.

I truly hope that the days when TV was considered inferior to movies are behind us. Hell, if I look at the movies nominated for Academy Awards last year and shows that are still airing like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Homeland...it is TV that is actually superior. These actresses below deserve better roles in better projects they appeared in. More often than not the role I highlighted in this article was a big break for them, but sadly not much happened afterwards.

Saturday TV Special: Farewell to The Office

On Thursday, after 9 years, The Office reached its finale. The show that was originally inspired by British comedy series with Ricky Gervais was one of the most well known and popular series in the world. I watched every single episode of it, often times more than once. The first 7 seasons, the ones that still had Steve Carrel in it, had some of the funniest moments I've seen on TV.

While Game of Thrones is dark and full of terrors, there is also plenty of humor. Hilarious lines, witty characters and even some situational comedy. There are also many of unintentionally funny scenes, mostly involving Kit Harington attempts at acting and Daenerys shouting about her missing dragons back in season 2.

However next to the scenes that made a lot of people laugh there are those that greatly amuse me whenever I see them. Though some of those listed below may have been intended as funny, I laughed out loud at each of those:

Famous tagline "no limits" is one of the best advertising strategies from HBO. Is it really true though? Yes. We get to see things on HBO that an ordinary broadcasting station wouldn't dare to show. And though Showtime and AMC have a fair share of shocking things in their shows, HBO still takes the prize for the most courageous station.

5 actors I'd love to see in future seasons of Game of Thrones: Casting A Song of Ice and Fire

One of the best things about HBO's Game of Thrones is the cast. The actors deliver such wonderful performances and they were perfectly chosen for the characters they are bringing to life. There are strokes of genius in casting Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime, Michelle Fairley as Catelyn Stark and Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister. As fantastic as the story is, it needs talent and dedication to be properly adapted. And everyone in the show is doing tremendous job.

I've recently rewatched the first two seasons of Game of Thrones and the show has so many amazing scenes in it. I finally managed to list my favorite ones, so here we go:

Saturday TV Special: Game of Thrones season 3 - 10 awesome things worth waiting for

(no spoilers, just teasing)

We now have 22 days to the much awaited premiere of season 3 of Game of Thrones. This season will contain abut 2/3 of events in Storm of Swords and some from later books. The next season will most likely be a mix of book 3,4 and 5. Because of the trailers and casting news we now have at least a bit of a confirmation of what we will see in the upcoming season.

After having a very hard time in the last few months Richard and John decide to spend few days in L.A. Things don't go well, obviously, as Richard is being his typical self on the airplane which gets him arrested. John represents him and Richard is freed but then he gets arrested yet again...this time for solicitation. During their stay both Richard and John both meet women who are seemingly perfect for them.We also get to see John rip yet another attorney to pieces with the use of his wisdom, water pouring trick and the bells.

Runner ups: 
5.11 - A Kick in the Head - though it's 5th season which was mostly terrible, it was still worth seeing for the scenes with John and Richard. And in this one they handle the case of a man who killed his wife after he kicked her...thinking she was a soccer ball. Richard who knows nothing about the law is the 1st chair on this one. At one point he actually stands up in court and says "my client's wife said she dated him just for kicks". That's just golden.

American Horror Story: Asylum - 2x13 Madness Ends (season 2 finale)

Madness Ends marks the conclusion to American Horror Story season 2. Very cinematic and at times moving finale was infinitely better than the one we got last year. We began as Johnny, modern day Bloody Face and Lana and Thredson's son walks around the Asylum where his parents met. We also got another look at the opening of the season when two unlucky newlyweds met Bloody Face.

Through the entire finale we were going back at forth to modern times when elderly and now very famous Lana Winters is being interviewed. We saw parts of her documentary that exposed the abuse in Briarcliff. One of Lana's best memories was fabricated - Atonement style - when she said she rescued Sister Jude from the Asylum. We also see how much the things in Briarcliff deteriorated when the patients were basically left alone as there wasn't enough staff to take care of them.

Saturday TV Special - AHS: Asylum 2x10 The Name Game / 2x11 Spilt Milk / 2x12 Continuum

My threshold for crazy is pretty high up. It takes chicken drumstick fellatio or telepathic sex with Nicole Kidman's ripped stockings in her panties area to disturb me. But damn if Ryan Murphy didn't come close to those levels in the last three episodes of American Horror Story. But what's even more astonishing is that for the first time in the history of the series he made an episode that was such a baffling mess, I understood maybe 50% of it. But before we get to dissect Continuum, let's start with The Name Game.

Saturday TV Special - AHS: Asylum 2x08 Unholy Night / 2x09 The Coat Hanger

What would Christmas look like in the asylum? Well, we know it now, thanks to episode 8 of season 2 of American Horror Story. The episode starts with a prologue featuring brilliant Ian McShane as a demented killer - Lee - dressed up like Santa Claus. During one Christmas Eve he massacred 18 people and it results in him ending up in Asylum. But now, when sister Jude is no longer in charge and Sister Mary Eunice aka the Devil calls the shots, he will have the opportunity to determine who was naughty and who was nice yet again. Mary Eunice also gets to decorate the Christmas Tree. Now how would Satan decorate the Christmas Tree? With all sorts of disturbing stuff found in the Asylum, of course.

Saturday TV Special: AHS: Asylum - 2x06 The Origins of Monstrosity / 2x07 Dark Cousin

In the last two weeks in American Horror Story we had another series of delightful gore filled scenes and fucked up occurrences. Lana is now the unluckiest character on TV, while people are coming up with new theories each week what could happen to Dr Arden for justice to be served. Being eaten alive by raspers? Getting his dick cut off? Being forced to watch Honey Boo Boo?
