Saturday TV Special: Game of Thrones season 3 - 10 awesome things worth waiting for

By s. Saturday, March 9, 2013 ,
(no spoilers, just teasing)

We now have 22 days to the much awaited premiere of season 3 of Game of Thrones. This season will contain abut 2/3 of events in Storm of Swords and some from later books. The next season will most likely be a mix of book 3,4 and 5. Because of the trailers and casting news we now have at least a bit of a confirmation of what we will see in the upcoming season.

The way we left things Robb was winning his battles, while Theon Greyjoy took Winterfell and was captured by men that previously fought with him. Tywin became the Hand of the King while Tyrion was deprived of power. Sansa remains on the court, though her betrothal to Jeffrey was ended, Cersei grows more and more insecure and Joffrey more and more sadistic.

Brienne is taking Jaime to King's Landing on Catelyn's orders to exchange him for Sansa and Arya. Arya continues her journey, as Bran continues his escape from Theon and Jon Snow is now captured. Sam is facing the whole army of White Walkers who are heading south, on the wall.

Since Storm of Swords is my absolute favorite book in the series I can't wait even more than last year.
Here are only some of the awesome things you can expect this season:
10. House Tyrell
Status? Confirmed - synopsis for the first episode of season 3.
Since Margeary is now the very lucky fiancee of Joffrey, her entourage is visiting King's Landing. Among them is Queen of Thorns, one of the most beloved characters when it comes to Tyrells - she is Margaery's grandmother. Let's just say that the Lannisters will meet their match. I'm also looking forward to the scenes with Margaery and Sansa.
9. Jaime becoming much more complex character
Status? Confirmed - trailers.
While at this point in the story it seems that everyone changed at least a little, it's Jaime who is about to transform the most. I think he is the most interesting character in the series and as entertaining as his sarcasm and witty lines were, just wait till you see what lies ahead.
8. Brienne being even more badass
Status? Confirmed - trailers.
This season's most interesting storyline in terms of character development will most likely involve Jaime and Brienne and she has so many fantastic upcoming scenes. She is on her way to become new fan favorite. The problem is that the show runners will have to get very creative in future seasons as Brienne disappears for while in the book series.
7. Daenerys finally getting her shit together
Status? Confirmed - trailers and episode titles.
With the aid from awesome Jorah, things will finally start happening for Khaleesi after the disappointing storyline in last season.
6. Tywin, Tyrion, Cersei and Joffrey on the court
...and all kinds of showdowns between them as the trailer promises. Charles Dance as Tywin is one of my favorite performances in the show and his scenes with Tyrion are always terrific. Cersei will add a lot of paranoia to her current hobby - wine - and Joffrey....well what do you expect?
Status? Confirmed - trailer.
5. Reek, Reek rhymes with weak.
Status? Implied - trailer
I'll say no more.
4. DRAGONS!!!
Status? Confirmed - trailer.
As we saw in both trailers for the new season, the dragons are growing and they are even flying by now too. And Khaleesi will use them this season. Another good news is that they won't get stolen again so no more flyers with "WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS?" on bus stops.
3. Ramsay Snow
Status? Confirmed - casting.
Prepare yourself for Patrick Bateman of Westeros. No wait. Ramsay is worse. And you can't really prepare yourself for him. This dude will make Joffrey look normal, my sweet children of Summer.
2. Whole new kind of supernatural event
Status? Theory.
That one is tricky. The epilogue for book 3 can be used either as the ending to season 3, season 4 or it can actually be used as the last scenes for both seasons  - if they go by timeline of the events as ending to season 3 and then feature what actually happens in the epilogue in season 4 ending. I'm leaning toward the third possibility. Either way I think the show will continue with the tradition of involving a supernatural/magical element in the last scene of the season and you won't believe your own eyes when it happens.
1. Episode 9
Status? 100% confirmed.
I'll say no more.
With what is widely considered to be the best book in the series the source material is there. The actors are there. The resources are there. All we need is for the guys who adapt the books to do the good job. They are more than capable of doing that as they proved repeatedly with few major set backs - eg. House of Undying.

Another thing - does HBO really have no limits? The amount of violence in this season will be astounding. People will be hurt and killed in extremely gruesome ways. Sure there was a lot of violence on HBO but  the things that were truly disturbing were usually fantastical (True Blood) or just implied (Carnivale). Here we have full blown, season long blood bath. And it won't get any easier as we go along. But man, oh man, is It all amazingly written, entertaining, gripping and thrilling? YES.

  1. I just started reading A Storm of Swords yesterday. I am hoping to finish it before the series starts. If they are covering parts of 4 and 5 as well in this season, it won't help much but well, I got to read it some time.

Really excited for this season after this post. Lets see how nasty does it get. :P

    1. Awesome that you are a fellow fan! I think they will use parts of book 5 this season, but it's mostly going to be material from book 3.

10 months of waiting, why does HBO hates happiness? :/

  3. ZOMG who is this Ramsay Snow? Surely no one is worse than Joffrey.
Gah all this is making me want to read the books before the show starts but I don't have time or brains or book space (all of which are unread) for it :(

    1. I wish you were right...Joffrey is just a spoiled brat, Ramsey is so cruel and very inventive when it comes to causing pain.

The show is beautifully adapted, so it's not a bad thing to get to know the story like that instead of reading the books :)

  4. Sneaky girl you... keep making me read about Game of Thrones! Anyway, omg, Iwan Rheon is cast as Ramsey! I love Rheon... which makes me very excited. Hope I can read the books before the season starts but I doubt I will get to the third one - they are so long!

    1. I don't know his work, but I know people were excited when he got cast, apparently he was a fan favorite for Ramsey so that's a good sign!

    2. I only know him from Misfits.. and he's a musician as well. I don't know Ramsey's character yet so.. I trust the fan favorite aspect. :D

    3. I think he will do a good job, he has the right, dark look for it, though he is quite good looking and Ramsey looked...unpleasant.

  5. I really need to get around to watching this show and giving it a try while it's still early enough in its run that catching up wouldnt be too hard.

    1. What about HBO GO? I think it's cheaper. I don't think you will be able to avoid spoilers for that long :(

    3. He handles himself so well in The Hobbit - they wouldn't even need to train him for GoT :) And we desperately need more male nudity from HBO :P

  9. I've read all the books and now just waiting for this series to be over. I like to watch it all at once, couldn't stand watching 1 episode per week. :)

    1. It's terrible but it's like a small fix, 10 months of withdrawal is bad enough :P

  10. Another good GoT post. I liked the third book, but it's not my favorite. One of my favorite characters is Arya and she didn't really get to advance much in the third book, so that was a disappointment. I'm hoping the show gives her more to do. Also, I've been told I'm "not normal" when it comes to anticipating what's coming in movies, and perhaps that extends to books, too, but the "big event" you are referring to I felt was completely telegraphed in the books, right from when they were talking about how the character that precipitates it reacts when he/she does not get their way.

    1. Oh yeah Arya didn't really have that much to do unlike in two previous books, but I think she will still get to have some awesome scenes in season 3.

I was kind of suspecting something but still I was shocked when Martin did what he did by the end of that thing. If HBO does this right it will certainly involve some powerful imagery - I just hope they won't change anything fearing it may be too violent.

  11. Season long blood bath? Patrick Bateman of Westeros? Khaleesi doing real shit? With dragons? Count me in. This list actually got me more excited than the trailers honestly. I kind of forgot how everything went down last season so hopefully HBO will do one of their nifty recaps that they usually do. I'll certainly need it. The items on your list that you didn't even expand on actually hyped me on the most. They must be fantastic if you can't spare a detail!

I do hope there is some awesome stuff that happens with Arya though because I'm pretty sure she is my favorite character.

    1. Awesome, thank you for that considering how amazing the trailers are! :)

I think they did one, called A Gathering Storm or something like that, with clips from previous seasons and the cast filling in the blanks.

Yeah I can't say anything more, with one thing I'm scared to even give the official name for it, fearing it may get people intrigued enough they will google it.

Arya will be in many cool scenes this season but unless they change the book storylines we will see less of her here than in last season :(

  12. AWESOME POST! I cannot wait for Jaime and Brienne. And Tywin putting Tyrion, Cersai, and Joffrey all in their place. And Ep 9, and Dany's dragons being all badass.

    God, I'm excited.
