Visual Parallels: Skyfall + The Dark Knight

By s. Wednesday, March 6, 2013 , ,
Skyfall and The Dark Knight - both highly successful and considered by many to be the best films in their respected franchises. Both directed by acclaimed directors, featuring iconic hero and fantastic villain.

The very first of similarities I noticed was in the way Silva and the Joker are shown - often surrounded by shadows but usually in the centre of the frame, controlling it, much like they control everything in the movie. Hell, they even use the same disguise at one point, they both bring havoc to the city and they both threaten the person the hero loves.

On close examination, the setting of the characters in the scenes is very similar in these two movies. There are even some characters that have the same purpose. While the villain has many scene stealing moments the hero is presented as brave but flawed and also - very cool. Both films feature killer ride of the protagonist and its destruction which apparently left many in the audience heartbroken.

Next in the series - Breaking Bad and Pulp Fiction

  3. Great stuff! I hadn't made this comparison. Look forward to the next episode.

I hope you do a visual parallel of Amelie (2001) and Double Life of Veronique (1991), the look of those two films is similar.

    1. I'm not sure about this one, they are similiar indeed, but I try not to use the same film twice and I already paired up Amelie with The Artist.

  4. I love this series. The amount of work you put in to find the same shots are astounding, great work. I think Christopher Nolan should direct the next Bond Feature, and Sam Medes should direct the next Batman movie

    1. Thank you! That would be really interesting, I think Nolan is a big fan of the series so with enough cash they could probably persuade him to do this :)

  6. Glad to know it wasn't just me who saw the comparisons, visually, between these two. When Bond was in that building fighting some bad guys, it all felt too Christopher Nolan to me (especially the way it was shot).

    Good post, as always!

    1. Yeah I think there are some huge influences between the two, Mendes probably looked up to Nolan's style given how this was if I'm not mistaken his first adventure with action genre and Nolan is highly regarded in that field.

    1. Thank you! The last one is so obvious, but I only noticed it after taking screencaps :)

  8. Oh my goodness, you're just brilliant Sati, this is amazing!! I kept nodding my head all the way down. I had to share this with my husband who's a User Experience designer and he's very impressed with your work here. I LOVE that last one, WOW!! Awesome work, once again.

    1. Thank you! :) It's fun doing those, especially last stage with making the graphics but going back and forth to take shots can be tiring :)

Fortunately the next one is a bit easier as I know Pulp Fiction so well it's not even that hard to find all the moments to take screencaps from :)

    2. So do you have both DVDs, I mean I can imagine it could be very tedious to do sooo many screen captures. But this is one of those posts I don't see ANYWHERE else Sati, so well done!! Looking forward to the next one, and MORE!

You definitely are getting tons of LAMMY noms from me. I personally would rather take myself out of it, I'm not even going to do a FYC poster this year.

    3. Thank you! I know the films I feature in VP pretty well, usually when I take the caps I know in which scene to look, in worst case scenario I just rewatch the film :)

Thank you! I don't much care about that as it seems to me that some people have a head start just by being long time friends of the LAMB and the creators, but I'd do FYC poster, probably, why not put up a fight :P

  10. Still haven't seen Skyfall... but yea, great visual memory you have. I wish I had something like that but nope, I have to remember weird things and unimportant stuff. I have a visual memory when it comes to reading though. Anyway. Yay for visual parallels!

    1. Skyfall is definitely worth seeing, I don't think it has much of rewatch value, though next time I'm having a big movie night, who knows :)

I'm good with reading too, but when it comes to remembering things I've heard...oh no :) I don't think I remember any of the lectures from the last term, much less prior to that.

    2. I think I remember things I hear.. but mostly, it's the kind of memory that remembers where the definition is in the certain book (page 55, upper right corner besides the picture of a dog) and NOT what the actual definition is. :D

    3. Oh yeah I have that too! I still remind myself it could be worse, my memory could suck completely and that would be a big problem :P

  11. Great one! This could have been just as easily called visual AND narrative parallels! Can't wait to see Breaking Bad and Pulp Fiction!

  15. I know these take you a long time to put together, but damn if the work doesn't pay off. Just mesmerizing, really. The fact that you're able to draw such similar visual parallels is really quite impressive. GREAT work.

  18. Wow, great work as always here, Sati! I noticed a lot of conceptual similarities between Skyfall and TDKR, but didn't really think about a visual connection with TDK. Very cool stuff here, makes me want to rewatch both films!
