90h Annual Academy Awards

By s. Monday, March 5, 2018

We finally live in the world where Sam Rockwell has his Oscar!!!

Sam's speech was lovely, funny and filled with genuine gratitude. Unfortunately, it was one of the very few good things that happened at the ceremony.

Last night Oscars have been downright shameful. Practically no one took stand and the audience didn't even stand up for Annabella Sciorra, Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd which was saddening to watch. Thank God for Frances McDormand delivering nice Oscar moment and asking fellow female nominees in all categories to stand up but it was not enough.

Jimmy Kimmel was OK hosting but nowhere near as good as last year. Nothing memorable happened and the jet ski thing wasn't that funny.Almost the entire thing was so lukewarm, boring and underwhelming it reminded me of that dreadful ceremony Chris Rock hosted 2 years back. I mean it really says something when the funniest thing that happened was Armie Hammer getting hooked to IV the day of the ceremony because of 'stomach flu'.There is no one more thirsty for attention than this guy. Kimmel was funny and he really tried but he didn't have the material, last year he was fantastic.

I thought everything Kumail Nanjiani said and did was hilarious. He should host one day!

Also yep, Black Panther lovefest already began. Get ready for them to nominate this when they didn't Wonder Woman.

Highlights included the adorable cast of Star Wars (Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill and Kelly Marie Tran) and BB-8 being on stage. BB-8 rolled in and Oscar tickled him and that almost ended my life:

Unfortunately Kobe Bryant won. You don't nominate Franco but this you do?

But then Coco won and Oscar was so happy, he pulled Gael to him to hug him and that also almost ended my life:

How is Gael still alive?

I did like the theater bit Kimmel did where they went to the cinema to surprise movie goers and Mark Hamill awkwardly introducing himself to Gal Gadot was so adorable. The skit went for far too long though.

It was insane how it was 90th ceremony and they did absolutely nothing special. They did have pretty good presenters but it was all so boring. Some of this was downright cringeworthy like the best song acceptance speech. It's such a shame This is Me didn't win. That it such a rousing song and from what I've seen the only performance that got the standing ovation from the crowd. I wish Chris Pine was there to cry.

But other than the audience not even giving a standing ovation to Weinstein's victims to show them their support and to applaud their courage, Academy was shamelessly covering for Casey Affleck - they had Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence present Actress (Affleck said he won't attend) and to make sure no one watching will ask 'why are two women presenting actress and one person is presenting actor??' they had Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda present best actor.

Another cringe moment was Emma Stone saying "these four men and Greta Gerwig". When Natalie did that it was in poor taste, when Stone did it, it was just stupid.

It was a ceremony filled with cowardice so it makes sense the Shape of Water won instead of a movie that actually has something to say. And Faye and Warren showed up and did great job presenting but there wasn't even much of a reference to envelope gate. Best one was Mark Hamilll saying "don't say la la land don't say la la land' as  he was opening the envelope.

This made me laugh, though but the Damon shade with Jimmy apologizing to the men and women in military for including Damon in the montage was the best bit of the night. Also I cannot watch McConaughey laughing and not laugh myself.

  1. One of the dullest ceremonies I can remember. Sam winning was the ultimate highlight, then it went downhill from there...until McDormand took the stage...but that was HOURS later.

""these four men and Greta Gerwig" ... ugh I cringed. That was just stupid and tasteless and pointless.

    1. Like seriously, it's not the nominees' fault they were nominated. I thought the only person who addressed it well was Streisend at the Globes who was wondering how come so few female directors got nominated, but that was not during director category so it was not disrespectful to the nominees

  2. Man I thought I was the only who didn't like Natalie Portman's comment at the Globes. Glad other people share my opinion.

The show was soooooo long omg. Sam and Frances' speeches were definitely the highlight.

    1. It was very rude and it was directed at the wrong people.

Emma's was even worse because Greta was actually nominated here.

  3. It was OK. Happy Sam Rockwell, Roger Deakins, Jordan Peele, James Ivory, and Guillermo won.

BTW, J-Law looked either drunk or high on coke. She is such a phony. I really think you should take the consideration of having Scar-Jo 3:16 lay a can of whoop-ass on her. If J-Law has some people to back her up.... CALL THE BULLET CLUB (Scar-Jo 3:16, Cactus Jena, Queen Anne, Evil Olivia, PO'TMAN MOTHAFUCKA, ERW, & Tiny Canadian Destroyer).

    1. Guillermo winning over Nolan, though....

    2. I know, I wanted Nolan to win but with that line-up of nominees. I would've gone with anyone and not be mad about it.

    3. For me Nolan did something none of them would be able to do

  4. I agree with pretty much everything. It was pretty boring as far as the ceremony itself goes. Best thing about the night were the people who attended and created genuine moments, like THAT hug. My god, that was so precious.

Jimmy Kimmel felt way too cautious for me, like he was playing it safe?? Of course that's him and everyone around him responsible for the production. Some jokes did work though - like Damon's, yeah.

I cringed at that Emma Stone comment too, why the fuck. And I was shocked by how uninspiring the Sciorra / Hayek / Judd moment was. Thank god for McDormand indeed, the only one with balls, and the right ones.

    1. They really blew this #metoo moment so bad. The audience stood up for Common performing but for this they didn't stand up? Kumal's lines in that video were amazing but honestly it was all too little. It was just so depressing to witness

  5. It really was boring, its the first time I have ever watched the Oscars. The skits and pre-written lines didn't click with me at all.

Frances' speech was just incredible, so powerful.

And Sam Rockwell, goddamn he rules. Watching this made me immediately watch three billboards and god he really deserved that award. Time to rewatch Moon now. First it was Viggo, then Oscar Isaac, and now Sam. My man-crushes seem to match yours hehe :P

    1. Oh my God first time and this is the ceremony you saw? Damn, I've been watching for 15 years most years they are actually pretty fun. The last one was really good.

    2. i never really cared for them, seemed like a popularity contest with people getting all irked over snubs. But Billboards doing so well has changed that. I'll be watching next year!

One snub I did find odd was Streep. Why?? Vicky Krieps in PT was so, so, so much better

    3. They always nominate Streep. It's pathetic. Her last two nominations were really undeserved.

  6. This was very boring show and I don't get the logic behind nominating Kobe and Oldman but snubbing Franco. He really must not have been as big of a lock as everyone thought he was? I don't know.

I already forgot most of the ceremony.

    1. They are so hypocritical in their decisions, it's like they are 50/50 on everything and cannot take a stand on anything

  7. Didn't watch the ceremony, so I can't speak on that. I was pleased with Rockwell and Oldman finally winning something, and a handful of other wins here and there, but really the whole thing felt pretty blah for the most part. I guess that'll happen when I have barely anything to root for that's nominated. :P

    1. Also when everything is locked and everyone knows what will win :) BP was still a surprise to me. I thought they had some balls...but nope. They awarded Shape which is actually quite a conventional choice.

  8. I enjoyed the ceremony but I didn't get the whole jet ski thing. I didn't know about Bryant. I liked his movie but now I'm pissed he won. I love Emma Stone but her comment was awful.

    1. The jet ski thing was just something stupid that Kimmel's writers thought of but it was kinda adorable how the winners kept mentioning it

  9. Nice recap here! I just rewatched the Oscar highlights and the reception Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, and Salma Hayek got is indeed very odd. No ovation? No ecstatic applause? Like... what?
