Saturday TV Special: What We Do in the Shadows

By s. Saturday, May 9, 2020 ,
Plot: A look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of three vampires, who've lived together for over 100 years, on Staten Island.
Structure: Every episode focuses on another issue our adorable vampires must face - trying to find food (ideally virgins), dealing with their living conditions (and avoiding a disliked roommate who happens to be an energy vampire), organizing a vampire orgy, dealing with animal control, trying to make sense of zoning committees, fighting with werewolves, and many, many others.
Verdict: This is easily way, way funnier than the movie. While the film was very amusing and clever, this series never fails to deliver the lough out laughs and is so incredibly witty. Also the characters are very likable in spite of being blood - or energy - thirsty vampires, which is quite an accomplishment.

Best episode: I think that would be "Baron's Night Out" but it's a very, very close race. Each episode is fantastic. Still, the quick cut to Baron dancing in the club with glow sticks and Nadja and Laszlo looking at him like 'what the fuck do we do now?' kills me every single time.
Who you may recognize: Matt Berry from The IT Crowd, Doug Jones, Beanie Feldstein (season 1) and Craig Robinson (season 2). Mark Hamill is making a guest appearance in next week's episode. The original trio from the movie makes appearance in one of the episodes along with a whole bunch of surprise guests. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are in charge of the series and direct and write some of the episodes.
Who will like it? Fans of the original movie, fans of documentary-style comedy series and quirky humor.
When and where? FX, Wednesdays. The show is currently in its second season.

  1. I'm so mad at FX right now because they don't have season 2 of Pose on demand, but I do want to start watching this. I'll have to look if their On Demand selection for this show sucks too. lol

  2. As much as I love the movie (it's one of my favourites), I have to admit that you are right, the series is so much more funnier. I cannot wait for next week's episode.

  4. I love the movie so much but I just don't feel up to starting a new TV show right now. Once the world starts to feel a little normal I will be on this show so fast though!

  6. That special episode was sooo packed with people, I was f--king stunned. Some great cameos, right?

I think I'm an apisode or two behind, but I really do love this show so much. Nadja just might be my favorite of the three because of how little shit she takes, but honestly, Matt Berry's delivery is so consistently hilarious, Laszlo probably wins out.

I recommended it to my parents and I'm assuming that's the last I'll hear from them.
