Scene of the Week - Snow White and the Huntsman

Mirror, mirror, on the wall....

The scene: Though the entire Snow White and The Huntsman was a bunch of people walking and one wasted talented chasing another, I did enjoy Charlize Theron's work here and if I ever get around to watching Director's Cut of the movie that has been rotting on my shelf for months, it will only be for her performance as the iconic Evil Queen.

Not the fairest of them all

Snow White and the Huntsman was really shaping out to be a good movie - all the trailers, TV spots and pictures promised darker, more exciting and mature take on the famous classic fairytale. Unfortunately, the film falls flat because of the very poor script and film's unnecessary prolonged run time. Even when some elements do work here, because there are so many story arcs the film frequently abandons its greatest achievements and replaces them with boring sequences that at times make the film quite a snoozefest.

After the loss of her mother, Snow White is living alone with her father, the King in the castle and spends a lot of time playing with her friend - William. Soon the land is attacked by the mysterious, magical army. When the King defeats them he finds a prisoner - beautiful woman named Ravenna and instantly falls prey to her charm. Ravenna murders him during wedding night, takes over the kingdom and imprisons Snow White.

With the release of Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart as the iconic princess with pale skin, red lips and black hair I decided it's time to look at the other versions of Snow White's story. There is something about those pure girls from fairy tales that is a great source of inspiration for musicians, writers, poets...it's the same with Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland. Here are some of the versions of the story which while always have the familiar elements also contain some crucial differences to the classic fairytale.

I had no idea so many great actors will be playing the Dwarfs in the film - Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Nick Frost, Ray Winstone...also I adore the little dance between them and Snow White.

Brand new featurette promoting "Snow White and the Huntsman" showed up - it features Charlize Theron, who talks about her character - evil Queen Ravenna.

Extended Preview and TV spot for "Snow White and the Huntsman"

Searching the youtube today I found some great promo materials for Snow White and the Huntsman, where we get to see more of the footage than we did in the trailers. The movie is a new version of the classic fairytale about Snow White (Kristen Stewart) who wakes the wrath of evil Queen (Charlize Theron) by being more beautiful than she is. The queen sends the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) after her to kill her.

While I'm pretty sure the magic forest sequence may cause me to puke on the children sitting in the row in front of me, the film looks pretty great and Charlize Theron was a fantastic choice for the part of the Queen, in spite of the fact that it's pretty hard to believe she could be envious of anyone.

2nd trailer for "Snow White and the Huntsman"

"Lips red as blood. Hair black as night. Bring me your heart my dear, dear Snow White." Although the movie seems to rely too much on the CGI which looks only slightly less embarassing than in "Alice in Wonderland", this is nice, dynamic trailer and one thing we can be sure of - Charlize Theron will deliver amazing work as an evil Queen. The logic however, behind casting her as the person envious of Snow White's beauty when the Snow White is played by Kristen Stewart is flawed, to put it mildly. Stewart is pretty, but Theron is pretty much a goddess. There are many beautiful shots in the promo especially when taking place in dark forest and on the snow.
