Catherine Élise Blanchett
Today is Cate Blanchett's 43 birthday. She is one of my favorite actresses who always delivers amazing and very charismatic performances and infuses them with so much grace and charm, you can't get them out of your head. The first performance of hers I saw remains my favorite one - in "Elizabeth" which incidentally should have been her Oscar win. Blanchett won years later for her performance in "The Aviator". She delivered so many astonishing performances and she is one of those actresses that can play inspiring heroines and the dangerous villains with the same credibility.5 favorite performances:
Elizabeth
Notes on a Scandal
Veronica Guerin
Heaven
Coffee and Cigarettes
5 favorite movies:
Elizabeth
Notes on a Scandal
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Babel
Veronica Guerin
5 fun facts:
- Enjoys making lists and crossing items off as she accomplishes them
- By winning the Oscar for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn, she became the first person to give an Oscar-winning portrayal of a previous Oscar winner.
- Is of French descent.
- Received the 2,367th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on December 5, 2008.
- After completing work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy in the role of Galadriel, she kept and bronzed her elf ear prosthetics.

She's amazing. One of the most striking faces ever. Her performance as Jude Quinn in I'm Not There is one of my most favourite performances ever.
ReplyDeleteShe is really wonderful in I'm Not There, but for some reason I didn't find the movie particularly memorable.
DeleteSuch a wonderful post. Of all, I loved her roles in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and LOTR. She's such an excellent actress!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm gonna see the Hobbit just because she is in it.
DeleteGreat write-up, I LOVE Cate Blanchett. My top five from her (which is no easy decision):
ReplyDeleteCoffee and Cigarettes
Veronica Guerin
Babel
Notes on a Scandal
I’m Not There
Have you seen her on Inside the Actors Studio? She is so insightful, and really really funny too.
I haven't seen it, I need to watch it soon! Glad you liked C&C and Veronica Guerin, for some reason her performances in those two are so underrated.
DeleteI LOVE miss Blanchett, she's one of my fave actresses of all time. I've dedicated a post to her last year with 7 of my favorite performances (http://wp.me/pxXPC-37l). Elizabeth and Veronica Guerin are definitely on my list. Great post, Sati!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I could watch Elizabeth over and over again, she completely captured the essence of her character.
DeleteThis is delightful! I'm working on a Cate Blanchett roundup on my blog for the end of the month, though I feel like I haven't seen enough her work. She's just remarkable, isn't she?
ReplyDeleteI thought she killed it in The Aviator.
This is a great post!
Thank you! Im working on something too, Im kinda shocked that I saw so many of her films and reviewed so few. She was in some obscure movies too that I need to check out.
DeleteI'm so excited her, Gosling, Bale and Portman are gonna be in a film together! :D
ReplyDeleteHer and Gosling together on screen is really a great prospect :)
DeleteAhh, yes! It is only a matter of time before she is bestowed the title "icon". And she'll fully deserve it too1
ReplyDeleteShe really does! Not only is she a talented actress but her style and elegance are quite impressive.
DeleteCate Blanchett... awesome.
ReplyDeleteMy 5 favorite Blanchett performances.
1. I'm Not There
2. The Aviator
3. Coffee and Cigarettes
4. Elizabeth
5. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
I'm excited that she's going to be in 2 Terrence Malick movies with the Gosling, the Rooney Mara, Christian Bale, and... PO'TMAN MOTHAFUCKA!!!!
Who knows maybe because of the cast I will finally enjoy Mallick's movie :) It will be nice to see Natalie in the first ambitious movie since Black Swan too.
DeleteGreat spotlight. I love her segment in Coffee and Cigarettes, one of the many highlights of that film.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it was one of my favorite ones too, along with the one with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits.
DeleteGod I love this woman. She is so unbelievably talented and beautiful. I honestly think that she is one of the best actresses ever.
ReplyDeleteMe too, her performances in two Elizabeth movies are stunning enough. I hope we will see a lot of her in comming years, since lately she was making fewer movies.
DeleteGreat pics, can't really believe she is 43! Glad to see Notes on a Scandal represented in your lists. That's a performance that sticks in my head from the lovely Cate!
ReplyDeleteNotes on a Scandal is such a fantastic film, I really need to see it again some time. She does look fantastic indeed, I saw hwer recent pics from some magazine where she refused to have anything retouched and she looks beautiful.
DeleteA great post about a great actor. I am always amazed by how versatile she is. She is like a chameleon
ReplyDeleteS
Absolutely, can be both a horrible and the most honorable of people in her performances. She and Tilda Swinton are the two best actress nowadays, at least for me.
DeleteOne of my favorite actresses, she is just so beautiful, talented and with a lot of class and elegance. I loved her in Curious Case of Benjamin, and her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth was stunning!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad there is so much love here for her work in Benjamin Button, the movie seems to be so hated. It has both Cate and Tilda in it and for me that is magical.
DeleteCate Blanchett is so beautiful, and completely versatile. I haven't seen many of the films you've mentioned here, but I really enjoyed Notes on a Scandal (I liked the book too). My favourite film of hers is probably Benjamin Button, but I recently saw Little Fish; bit different to some of her other roles but she's just as great
ReplyDeleteI never saw Little Fish but I will definetly see it soon, I'm sure as always she was wonderful in it.
DeleteDamn, excellent post! Love the shout out to Coffee and Cigarettes, I'm still impressed by her work in that one. Clearly, the camera loves Cate if she can hold our attention for a full segment on simply her and her alone. Though of my favorite of her characters has to be her villain in Hanna, even if she's done better performances.
ReplyDeleteI really love her work in Hanna, she was so icy and sophisticated. She really was a terrific villain.
DeleteShe's such a striking beauty, isn't she. And that voice of hers is unique as well. Happy b-day to Cate and great post Sati!
ReplyDeleteThank you! She is gorgeous beyond belief, especially in Elizabeth.
DeleteBeautiful post! I love her but haven't seen enough movies with her... Ah, I wish I had time.
ReplyDeleteMe too, I still haven't seen so many :(
DeleteShe is such a stunningly beautiful woman. Classic looks that'll never go away. Amazing performances too. One of my favourites has to be Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator and Galadriel in LOTR. Great choice of screengrabs, Sati!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I can't wait to see her in The Hobbit.
DeleteI love Cate Blanchett, her performances are always great. Glad to read this appreciation post.
