Cate Blanchett Appreciation

By s. Monday, May 14, 2012
Catherine Élise Blanchett
 (14 May 1969, Melbourne, Australia)

“If I had my way, if I was lucky enough, if I could be on the brink my entire life - that great sense of expectation and excitement without the disappointment - that would be the perfect state.”

Today is Cate Blanchett's 43 birthday. She is one of my favorite actresses who always delivers amazing and very charismatic performances and infuses them with so much grace and charm, you can't get them out of your head. The first performance of hers I saw remains my favorite one - in "Elizabeth" which incidentally should have been her Oscar win. Blanchett won years later for her performance in "The Aviator". She delivered so many astonishing performances and she is one of those actresses that can play inspiring heroines and the dangerous villains with the same credibility.

5 favorite performances:
Elizabeth
Notes on a Scandal
Veronica Guerin
Heaven
Coffee and Cigarettes

5 favorite movies:
Elizabeth
Notes on a Scandal
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

5 fun facts:
  • Enjoys making lists and crossing items off as she accomplishes them
  • By winning the Oscar for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn, she became the first person to give an Oscar-winning portrayal of a previous Oscar winner.
  • Is of French descent.
  • Received the 2,367th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on December 5, 2008.
  • After completing work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy in the role of Galadriel, she kept and bronzed her elf ear prosthetics.

    1. She is really wonderful in I'm Not There, but for some reason I didn't find the movie particularly memorable.

  5. This is delightful! I'm working on a Cate Blanchett roundup on my blog for the end of the month, though I feel like I haven't seen enough her work. She's just remarkable, isn't she?

I thought she killed it in The Aviator.

    1. Absolutely, can be both a horrible and the most honorable of people in her performances. She and Tilda Swinton are the two best actress nowadays, at least for me.

    1. I'm glad there is so much love here for her work in Benjamin Button, the movie seems to be so hated. It has both Cate and Tilda in it and for me that is magical.

  14. Cate Blanchett is so beautiful, and completely versatile. I haven't seen many of the films you've mentioned here, but I really enjoyed Notes on a Scandal (I liked the book too). My favourite film of hers is probably Benjamin Button, but I recently saw Little Fish; bit different to some of her other roles but she's just as great

    1. I never saw Little Fish but I will definetly see it soon, I'm sure as always she was wonderful in it.

  15. Damn, excellent post! Love the shout out to Coffee and Cigarettes, I'm still impressed by her work in that one. Clearly, the camera loves Cate if she can hold our attention for a full segment on simply her and her alone. Though of my favorite of her characters has to be her villain in Hanna, even if she's done better performances.
