Eva Green Appreciation

"She is so beautiful, it’s indecent." - Bernardo Bertolucci on Eva Green

Today is the birthday of one of my favorite actresses working today - Eva Green. She is the most famous for her work as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale and over the years it seems that she is always just one step away from real fame. She has starred in many interesting movies - her first feature film was The Dreamers, where she created very brave performance she was later on praised for and which opened the door to her career, in Womb where she played the woman who lost the man she loved and now wants to clone that man and give birth to the child, that will essentially be him and Perfect Sense which for me was one of the most underrated movies of last year - the story of the end of the world which begins when everyone starts losing their senses, one by one. She tried her luck in TV delivering strong work in Camelot, unfortunately the show was cancelled. This year it really seemed things will go better as she starred opposite Johnny Depp in Dark Shadows, unfortunately the film was an utter disappointment.

My favorite performance by Eva is her work in Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven. To this day I cannot forgive Scott for cutting so many of her scenes out of theatrical version of the movie. I firmly believe that if director's cut was the film that was released in theatres Eva would go on to win many awards as her work there was stunning, fierce and moving. Unfortunately, the cutting of the material took the biggest toll on her character's story arc in the movie, ironically one that was the most interesting part of it.

I love Green not only because of her talent and bold choices she makes in her career but also for her style, wonderful personality and good taste. Whenever she is giving an interview she does look very endearingly shy and always shows off her great sense of humour.  She says she wishes to live in a castle, surrounded by dogs. Her favorite actors are Edward Norton, Cate Blanchett and Jeane Moreau. She prepares herself for her work while listening to the music, for example during the preparation for Casino Royale she listened to Tom Waits. She says if she wasn't an actress she would like to be a cook. So there you have it - beautiful, talented and knows how to cook. If only she could finally have her big break.

  1. I LOVE your Appreciation posts, Sati, they're so fun to read/look at.

Vesper is my favorite Bond girl, I just love her, she's stunning but intelligent, no wonder Bond falls for her. I didn't really like Kingdom of Heaven but Eva was good in it, it's Orlando in the lead role that I didn't care for.

I love the pics you posted here, she really is indecently beautiful, what is it w/ the French girls!

I also like these promo pics from Casino Royale, she looks so relaxed here w/ Daniel:

    1. Thank you!

Orlando was a miscast, fortunetly with longer DC he doesn't even seem all that relevant anymore.

Oh these are beautiful! Their chemistry was a big reason why I enjoyed Casino Royale so much.

  2. Oh she is stunning. I so love her in The Dreamers. I don't know who I am attracted to most in that film.

Womb was a misstep, but she was gorgeous in Casino Royale, and the best part about Dark Shadows.

I love the black and white shots of her at the end.

    1. Womb was one crazy movie for sure. I agree, she was the best part of Dark Shadows, too bad the movie is such a poop.

Love that picture too, she is so much fun!

  3. Can't say that I knew much about Eva Green before seeing "Perfect Sense" (which I really liked, thanks for bringing that one up) but I think she'll be on my radar now.

  5. She is one of my favorite actresses at the moment + she's so damn beautiful. Really wish she would get her big break though, as she's only got one film in production right now which just isn't enough Eva.

    1. Exactly, unfortunetly Burton screwed up - if Dark Shadows was a bigger success who knows what would happen.

  6. She's stunningly beautiful. Your description of "Womb" and "Perfect Sense" has got me very intrigued to check them out, especially the former. Don't know anything about both, but they have very interesting storylines there.

    1. They are very interesting movies and Eva is fantastic in both, though Perfect Sense is a much better film in my opinion.

  7. I too, am a Eva Green fan though I hope she gets better parts in better movies. I still love her in The Dreamers as well as The Golden Compass (an OK film), Casino Royale (still my favorite Bond girl), and Kingdom of Heaven (I still have only seen the theatrical cut though I'm eager to see the Director's Cut).

    1. You really should check out DC - out of all Scott's movie I think that Kingdom of Heaven director's cut is the biggest improvement over theatrical cut. I of course wish he just fought for the longer versions to be released in the theatre in the first place.

  8. Oh gosh, I love Eva Green - I have since I was 11, I believe. She's so beautiful, and like you said, she makes bold choices. Something that we don't have enough of in today's films!

    1. Absolutely! I only wish her bold choices would finally pay up, she makes all of those good, interesting films and the only people who appreciate them seem to be her fans.

  9. If she never did anything else I would always remember her for the stunning recreation of the Venus d'Milo she did in The Dreamers - the first movie I ever saw her in.

  10. Great quote from Bertolucci! She is stunning! Not sure about the blond hair in that first screen cap though! I've only seen Casino Royale but really want to see Kingdom of Heaven and The Dreamers.

    1. Yeah, I like her much more with black hair, but that screencap is quite a lot of fun and sums up her work in Dark shadows for me :)

If you plan to see Kingdom of Heaven try to see Director's Cut it's so much better than TC.

  11. Hey, long time reader, first time commenter here.

Love her! Agree with your comments about Kingdom of Heaven. Also, she's probably the best bond girl of all time. Camelot was good tv and I'm surprised and a little disappointed not to see a second season.
Keep up the great blog work.

    1. Thanks for visiting!

I really loved her Vesper, she was so charismatic and complex - not just a pretty girl like most of Bond girls.

      Thank you!

  12. Eva Green needs to be in more films! For one thing, she's completely drop dead stunning. And another, hugely talented female actress. Loved her portrayal of Vesper in Casino Royale. She was the best thing about The Golden Compass and Camelot. Though, only saw a handful of episodes because it really was a bit dire....

    1. Camelot was quite a mess, it's a shame because if, say, HBO handled the material it could have been great and Eva was really fantastic in her role. I liked Kidman the most in Golden Compass, but Eva did a good job too.

  15. She's awesome. She's got that impossibly beautiful, larger than life look to her that only the classic femme fatales had. Have you seen Cracks yet?

    1. That's a great way to describe her. No, that is one of the few movies with her I haven't seen yet but I heard it's worth checking out.

  16. She is amazing – though my favourite performance of hers was in Dark Shadows. She can rock Burton's style impeccably! (And any hair colour.)

Lovely post, too. I love seeing people get appreciated on blogs.
