Ranking: Trailers for Awards contenders 2018

By s. Wednesday, October 24, 2018 , , , , , , , , , ,
With Oscar season upon us I thought it will be fun to choose the best marketing so far for awards contenders. I was originally going to do top 10 but honestly couldn't find this many good trailers - there's Welcome to Marwen which trailer is laughably bad, First Man trailers which are all pretty damn meh and stuff that looks so bland that I don't even wanna see those films (Boy Erased, Ben is Back). So I came up with 8 best ones, first 3 of which are truly spectacular.

8. Destroyer
US release date: December 25

This film may get a nomination for Best Actress for Nicole Kidman, doing her own Monster transformation here. A gritty, brutal crime thriller about a cop whose past iis haunting her. The trailer is all right but the combination of shots of Kidman as she is walking in three different scenes is really cool.

7. If Beale Street Could Talk
US release date: November 30

Very pretty trailer for Jenkins' follow up to Moonlight with performance from Regina King that may threaten Amy Adams' Oscar win chances.

6. Widows
US release date: November 6

Great trailer making the most of the use of Nina Simone's song that also highlights the impressive cast. Kaluuya, Davis and maybe even Elizabeth Debicki have a chance to be nominated for this.

5. The Favourite
US release date: November 23

With Olivia Colman going lead for the film the race is certainly interesting now, leaving Weisz and Stone to maybe both get nominated in supporting category. The trailer is dynamic, quirky and showcases both the humor and the strength of the performances.

4. The Mule
US release date: December 14

Clint Eastwood returns in front of the camera - after 6 years of absence - and also delivers yet another movie he directed. The story may not seem particularly groundbreaking but this is one hell of a trailer and who knows, if the film does well it may get Eastwood Best Actor nomination.

3. Vice
US release date: December 25

3 years ago The Big Short came out of nowhere with a great trailer featuring When the Levee Breaks. And now, much in the same fashion - the film is skipping all the fall festivals - here comes amazing trailer for Adam McKay's follow up to 2015's most rewatchable movie, this time featuring The Killers' the Man. The trailer is wonderfully edited and a bit misleading - don't expect a lot of Sam Rockwell in the movie - but it certainly makes you wanna see the film. Christan Bale and make up nominations are practically guaranteed as is Adams who is usually nominated and maybe this time she actually wins.

2. Green Book
US release date: November 21

The beautiful trailer for Green Book features wonderful song by Sam Smith & Logic "Pray" and uses it as the background to highlight the story of what will be, I'm sure,a very charming and wonderfully acted movie. And the editing is so good - I love that moment when Viggo fires the gun. And it is so much fun to see him in a lighter material.

1. A Star is Born
US release date: October 5
This trailer 17 million views on YouTube (Green Book is the second most watched out of this list -with over 3.700.000) and is not only the most popular but it is also the best one. We saw it so many times in the theatre yet it never lost any of its power. Featuring what will probably be the Best Original Song win - Shallow - and the stellar editing - that moment when Gaga starts singing mixed with the sound of motorcycle is incredible - this is the greatest trailer since the first trailer for Logan. And perhaps much like the trailer takes the top spot on this list, the film will win big on Oscar night.

  2. The Mule looks so....not my thing. lol. I loved the If Beale Street Could Talk trailer, it's gorgeous. I agree with ASIB being towards the top, even though I ending up not liking the relationship in it at all.

So ready for Vice! Great post!

    1. Vice is gonna slay. I just hope the people in USA aren't too tired of ridiculous and horrible stuff in the politics and won't be discouraged from seeing this

  3. Some really good ones here. I quite like "Green Book" and "The Mule". I found "Moonlight" to be wildly overrated but "Beale" looks really promising. And my gosh Kidman's transformation is stunning.

  4. All solid choices here. I actually was turned OFF by both Green Book and A Star is Born trailers...the former seeming campy and the latter seeming cheesy. Fortunately, they are both great! A Star is Born is actually spectacular...my mom said it was overrated, but I also think she was drunk.

Skip Boy Erased. You get all the best scenes in the trailer, and they're not even that good.

    1. LOL, I wonder what my mom will think of it :P

Boy Erased looks bland as hell other than Kidman's performance

    1. It was so well done! WB managed to release just this one single, full trailer for the movie and that was enough
