Emily Olivia Leah Blunt

I hate hearing actors going on about how difficult their lives are. I’m not on a minimum wage, working in McDonald’s, trying to bring up a family. Actors are so indulged in many ways, really.
Today Emily Blunt hits the big 30 and sadly I have to say I was hoping by this time she will be a much bigger star. She has only one movie in production and its story has something to do with the aliens, which is never a good sign. Unfortunately for Emily, many times during her career she was under contracts she couldn't wiggle her way out - this is why she starred in terrible Gulliver's Travels instead of being Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Just think; she could have been in Avenegers!
Thankfully she still gives us wonderful performances even when the films are awful (Adjustement Bureau) or painfully mediocre (Sunshine Cleaning). Last year she appeared in cringeworthy 5-year Engagement, Your Sister's Sister, which I have yet to see but heard good things about, and terrific Looper, for which she got wonderful reviews. No matter how many stinkers she finds herself in, she always appears to bounce back fast.
Emily's best performance for me is still one of her first roles in My Summer of Love. She got the most attention, however, for her supporting work in popular The Devil Wears Prada (BAFTA, Golden Globe nominations). She actually won Golden Globe award the same year - for her beautifully nuanced work in TV production Gideon's Daughter alongside Bill Nighy.
She got 2 more Golden Globe nominations for splendid The Young Victoria and mediocre Salmon Fishing in Yemen. For a while it did seem that Emily will go with the typical route for most English Roses - costume dramas. She appeared as Catherine Howard in Henry VIII, awful The Wolfman and aforementioned The Young Victoria. She does seem to prefer quirky indie genre and romantic comedies, though.

12 fun facts:
- Co-star Meryl Streep has praised Blunt as the best young actress she's worked with in some time, perhaps ever.
- She was told to lose weight for her role as Emily in The Devil Wears Prada (2006). She revealed this in a 2006 interview with Craig Ferguson. Co-star Anne Hathaway tells a similar story, and reports that she and Emily were always hungry on-set due to being kept on strict diets to maintain the rail-thin "super-model" look.
- Acting and adopting new accents helped her to overcome a debilitating speech impediment at age 12.
- Admits she and her The Devil Wears Prada (2006) co-star Stanley Tucci competed to see who could be more over-the-top in their scenes. Tucci admits his young co-star won "hands down".
- Her ex-boyfriend Michael Bublé wrote the hit single "Everything" for her. She is also on his album "Call Me Irresponsible", where she sings briefly at the end of the song "Me and Mrs. Jones".
- Best friends with actress Anne Hathaway. Emily refers to Anne as "her rock".
- Had a hamster named Tigger.
- Was in consideration to replace Katie Holmes in the role of Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight (2008), but Maggie Gyllenhaal was cast instead.
- Was originally cast as Natasha Rushman/Black Widow in Iron Man 2 (2010), but dropped out due to a scheduling clash with Gulliver's Travels (2010). As a result Scarlett Johansson was cast instead.
- Best friends with actress Amy Adams. The two became very close while shooting Sunshine Cleaning (2008) in 2008.
- Sister-in-law of Stanley Tucci. He is married to her sister Felicity Blunt.
- Married to John Kraisnski.
I love her. Her Emily is one of my most favourite supporting performances of all time. And she is gorgeous. And one-half of the cutest married couple ever.
ReplyDeleteHer and John are beyond adorable!
DeleteI didn't know she and Bublé dated, and the song... that's nice. She'd make a fierce Rachel Dawes I'm sure, but I also liked Maggie G. I like Emily Blunt quite a lot too, even though it's not because of any particular performance... there's just something about her that I find very compelling. Like Eva Green.
ReplyDeleteI'd love her to be in tDK, I think she would be much better. She is really sweet and I think she seems like a genuinely kind and friendly person.
DeleteI like Emily Blunt quite a bit. She does seem to be in quite a few poor films, though. Hopefully she can build off the momentum from Looper because she really is a talented actress.
ReplyDeleteI really hope she will be in more good movies but for now it doesn't seem to be happening soon :(
DeleteTo be honest, i didn't really get the love for her until watching Looper. She was damm near amazing in that
ReplyDeleteGlad to read you liked her work there! I thought she was fantastic.
DeleteI LOVE miss Blunt. I think my fave role of hers is Young Victoria, but I also love her in Jane Austen Book Club and Looper. I even like her in the so so Adjustment Bureau.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen "Jane Austen Book Club" yet but I really need to! I heard it's a lovely film.
DeleteI do love Emily Blunt. My Summer of Love is still my favorite performance of hers. I also love her in The Devil Wears Parda, The Jane Austen Book Club, Looper, and Sunshine Cleaning. She is also very funny. I saw some of The Five-Year Engagement where she has some funny moments. Unfortunately, I felt the film needed more work in the editing.
ReplyDeleteSame here, she was just mind blowing in this movie. Oh definitely, "the 5 year engagement" was much too long for romantic comedies. Her and Segel were cute but the film had very few laughs in it.
DeleteI love her, she is one of my favorite actresses. I loved her performance in Looper, Wild Target and Sunshine Cleaning. Plus, she and John Krasinski are adorable!
ReplyDeleteThey really are! I think they are my favorite celebrity couple.
DeleteYou could see her potential in My Summer of Love (can never understand why her co star in this film hasn't had much success as she was great too).
ReplyDeleteBlunt can do drama & comedy & has great chemistry with her co stars.
Hope she gets some decent material, she's very talented.
I agree, the other girl was wonderful too. I think the film is underrated as a whole.
DeleteIt's really nice seeing that people love her as much as I do. I think she's very talented yet underrated :( Hope she gets good movies these coming years :D
ReplyDeleteI hope so too, she really deserves to be in great movies!
DeleteYay! Glad to see her performance in My Summer of Love at the top. I'd love to see her in more dramatic leading roles in the future.
ReplyDeleteShe was incredible in that movie! Me too, she is so talented, she deserves better than romantic comedies.
DeleteShe's married to John Krasinski?! I like him on The Office, but I can hardly stand him outside of that show... His nice-guy routine can irritate the heck out of me. I haven't seen quite enough of her films, I think I've seen five... She's very talented, though :D
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think they were married for 2 years now, really cute couple too. I liked John in the Office but I don't think he would handle more serious roles.
