The Oscars are behind us and it was quite the show, after the ridiculous and awful hosting of Seth MacFarlane last year Ellen DeGeneres did quite the job last night. She called Matthew 'dirty pretty'. I loved that.
Sure, she was far from the best but she actually got pizza for the people there - a joke that was funny and quite adorable mostly because Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey served the guests Angelina looked weirded out - like. what is pizza? I feel so bad for her
Ellen also took a selfie but that selfie includes Jennifer Lawrence, unfortunately:
Speaking of that, it fell on red carpet again. I've been saying her fall last year was on purpose. That one was no different. She also always falls when camera is on her. She's pathetic. There was also this weird attempt to get laughs when she was presenting - 'who are you laughing at?'. No one laughed. She's so fucking selfish - it wasn't about you, you dumb bitch. She also talked through McConaughey's speech. Just compare that to the grace that is Lupita. This is what happens when you insist on making trash famous:
I didn't catch much of red carpet since I only turned the volume up for McConaughey. He brought his wife and his mother which was adorable.
The highlights of the ceremony are obviously American Hustle winning nothing and McConaughey taking the stage twice.
He presented Animated features award with Kim Novak and he was such a gentleman I seriously almost melted.
Pharell, whoever he is (I listen to Lana Del Rey, Southern Gothic and instrumental soundtracks exclusively) performed and Lupita, Meryl and Amy danced a little. It was awesome.
Have you guys seen that John Travolta introduction of the song from Frozen? What was he on?
At one point one of the recipients sang and Bill Murray leapt to his feet. That was awesome.
U2 also got standing ovation.
The award for supporting actress thankfully didn't go to Jennifer Lawrence but to Lupita Nyong'o which was met with explosion of joy in Dolby theatre. I'm just gonna throw in Benedict Cumberbatch crying during this for all of your horny mama bear instincts to kick in:
Lupita gave a very good speech but the winner when it comes to speeches is still Jared Leto, whose speech moved me to tears.
Jared also mentioned Ukraine. He was the only one who did. I gotta tell you, European media are loving this man now - they keep showing his speech. I thought it was just wonderful how he actually acknowledged the outside world especially since apparently the show was censored in Ukraine out of the pure fear someone will mention anything. This is madness.
Dallas Buyers Club also won for best make up - the budget of which was $250 dollars. McConaughey gave his colleagues a standing ovation. I almost melted again.
There were so many random music performances - Bette Midler? Pink? I started wondering if I didn't accidentally get high.
Kevin Spacey presented a short clips of the Governor's ball awards where Angelina Jolie received an award for her charity work. After the clip was shown that happened:
Gravity scored 7 wins last night with only 3 going to 12 Years a Slave. Ellen did call them out of that in her monologue - if you don't award 12YaS you are racist. And the Academy members are scared shitless of being criticized. But apparently they are cool with being homophobes. Never Forget, Never Forgive, Brokeback Mountain. Also they got Will Smith, who just won a Razzie and is continuing his career suicide as Satan in Winter's Tale, to present Best Picture. I mean....what?
Cate Blanchett won. What else is new?
Matthew won which was awesome. DiCaprio hugged him which caused a flood of "You broke my heart, Fredo!" memes on my tumblr. Matt was great on stage, so grateful, poised and happy, mentioning his dad, thanking his family. His wife is so goddamn lucky, by the way.
The place went silent when McConaughey mentioned God. Come on, I'm the farthest thing from Christian but honestly? It's his speech, his win and since he is religious he can praise God all he wants. I personally hoped he would reprise his final dance from Magic Mike...but hey, I'm just happy he won.
Steve McQueen pretty much reprised his BAFTA speech but the high point of that BP win is that Brad Pitt finally has an Oscar.
Here are some picks of the dresses. Chris Hemswoth's wife's dress you guys. What. the. fuck. Also Margot Robbie looks horrible as a brunette.

Great writeup Sati. Omg, the last GIF. This is sad and funny the same time ))
ReplyDeleteLeo was a good sport last night :)
DeleteOMG that last gif!! Poor Leo.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea wth Jennifer Lawrence was doing during her presentation. I think she does try to play up the "awkward girl" schtick way too much now.
I think the reason Angelina looked so strange in that pizza pic is because she's not used to eating.
She is seriously getting so much backlash for her behavior last night. I'm just sitting back and I laugh like a Disney villain.
DeleteLOL at your JLaw hatred. I love that chick mainly because I find her to be one of the freshest celebrity faces who cares so little about being proper and just wants to have fun...but whatever.
ReplyDeleteI still can't get over the fact that McConaughey has an Oscar, which is just horrible, but I'm happy for you since you're so happy about it.
Gravity winning 7 Oscars and then losing BP was ridiculous, but they are afraid of being perceived as racist and they were practically told for months that 12 Years HAD TO WIN...but at least Gravity had the hugest haul of the night and Cuaron is a two time Oscar winner!!!!
LOL at Travolta too. What an idiot. I blame him for fucking up Idina's nerves!!!
It's not that she doesn't care, it's that she can't - she has 0 class.
DeleteHe is a fantastic actor and a wonderful person, so yeah I couldn't be more happy.
I think Travolta tried to do something good but it just came off wrong.
Do I sense snark? LOL, love you Sati! I do kind of love that you detest JLaw and love the hell out of McCon, and I'm kind of the complete opposite.
DeleteI don't detest him though...I just don't get it.
Yeah I think I'm gonna boycott her next movies, though with the mess that is X Men, my lack of interest and The Hunger Games and the reported trainwreck that is Serena I'm not missing much :)
DeleteI'm so glad Lupita won, she looked stunning and her speech was lovely.
ReplyDeleteShe looked so great, speech was wonderful indeed!
Deletelol jennifer lawrence is her own most important person. jared--and his speech--just so awesome. i really want to be his friend, and then maybe offer him style tips.lol how did i miss the dirty pretty joke? (i must have been too busy recovering from the wonderfulness that is jared leto). anyway, go Lupita! and i loved ellen! surely one of the most memorable hosts i've seen recently
ReplyDeleteYou should cut his hair, he seriously looks like Jesus :)
DeleteEllen was really good, don't know why so many people are complaining.
Your last GIF was amazing. Yeah that speech from Leto was amazing. Cate Blanchett and Karen O looked the best to me. I thought Lupita's win was well deserved but I thought J-Law was very sincere and nice to everyone there. I agree with Fisti in that it's refreshing that she doesnt care about being proper and wants to have fun. She was still the best part about American Hustle
ReplyDeleteI don't think talking through someone's speech and acting like a spoiled brat qualifies as nice. She can have fun in her own time.
DeleteI think it was quite on mark this year and I can't even be mad at any of the winners out of the bunch because with one exception *cough* Hustle *cough* every Best Picture nomination deserved a win.. it was also nice that they split best picture and best director between the two big ones.. and like I predicted, The Wolf didn't get any because it was probably too controversial for the Academy but hey, at least they got nominations!
ReplyDeleteAll in all, a pretty great list of winners and I can't say I'm not liking any of the winners, Leto's speech kind of hit my heart so I'm glad he won as well. Also, since I've seen 30 Seconds to Mars live and they are coming to Estonia this month again, I can say, I've been very very close to an Academy Award winner! :D
Exactly, it was really weird to me how people kept predicting Wolf it's a terrific movie but the voters are mostly middle aged/elderly people - do people really think that they will vote for this over good old fashioned dramas?
Deletethat's really cool! He is having a European concert tour, I think, after his Ukraine comment they will be welcoming him here with opened arms.
Great stuff. I spewed my bottled water when I saw your last gif. Brilliant!!!
ReplyDeleteI know, right? That scene is golden on so many levels now :)
Delete'Speaking of that, it fell on red carpet again.' :D :D :D
ReplyDeleteYour hatred towards JL goes to new heights, especially referring to her with 'it' :D.
I also think was year's fall was on purpose, I mean...it looks so obvious (apparntly she thinks that she is so high in the socity's ladder that she felt the need to 'fall' for a moment so as not to get too high).
And that last gif is really cool.
I'm glad that McConaghey won, that guy is astounding in his roles.
I hate spoiled people who don't have enough respect for those who deserve respect. She is a spoiled, overrated brat and I don't think such behavior is refreshing - it's just disrespectful to people around her. Grown woman acing like a 5 year old is not something I consider admirable.
DeleteExactly.
DeleteGreat roundup! Poor Leo...
ReplyDeleteMcconaughey inspirational speech was my favorite, talking about what he cares about, which is good to see. Even if someone disagree with him, you can't fault his honesty. Leto and Lupita Nyong'o speeches were heartwarming, and I liked those too.
Exactly, he was so genuine and he always speaks his mind, I think it's Woody Harrelson who said that Matthew is an incredibly sincere person. And it was his moment so he should be free to talk about what's important to him.
DeleteThat last gif is just fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI thought JLaw talking through McConaughey's speech was awful. A lot of the stuff she does I can allow because it's clearly part of a well constructed public persona but her behaviour while presenting really wasn't cool at all.
I didn't see Benedict crying for Lupita, that's a really sweet moment. She really deserved that win and looked incredible. Great post!
She is always trying to make things about her, not only is media overexposing her, she adds to that constantly.
DeleteI really hope Lupita has better career than other black actresses who got Oscar lately.
That is a great write-up. I think Travolta either put his wig on too tightly or had a bad botox injection. Liza Minnelli and Kim Novak looked better than him.
ReplyDeleteI loved Matthew's speech. Especially the part about his dad walking in his underwear with a Miller Beer in one hand and a pot of gumbo in the other. He is the man. His mom is gorgeous.
I feel bad for Leo. I wanted him to win. My dad wanted him to win.
I also liked the speeches that Lupita, Jared, Cate, Alfonso, and Spike Jonze gave and they deserved to win.
Lupita is the best dressed of the night as I also liked what Amy Adams, Emma Watson, Charlize Theron, and Cate Blanchett wore. What the fuck is up with J-Law's hair... YIKES!!!
Thank you! Hahaha, that wig was just surreal. They did, but only a little bit.
DeleteMatthew really paints quite the picture, doesn't he?:D
JLaw really looked like she tried to do Hilary Clinton movie soon. Charlize probably looked the most beautiful, I'm so glad Sean Penn didn't come with her.
Sati-- Thank you I needed this. I've been eagerly awaiting your recap. Oh the JLaw fall and the shouting on stage? What the heck? Come on, It's like pull it together lady, you're not at the VMA's, you're at the Oscars-- you don't shout at the audience whilst on stage. It's not funny anymore.
ReplyDeleteI will say that I disagree w/ this whole premise that '12 Years A Slave' won solely based on content and not merit. It was a great film. It seems like this best pic win is being particularly picked on and singled out. I mean seriously "Unforgiven" won best picture in 1992. IMO, it was btw 'Gravity' and '12 Years.' I preferred 'Gravity' but I was fine w/ either. Someone on Twitter said it best, "White America: #12YearsASlave winning #Oscar ISN'T: 1) Reparations, 2) Proof of 'Post Racial" US, 3) End of Racism, 4) End of Slavery."
I missed Cumberbatch crying...awww that makes me wanna cry.
Chris Hemsworth's wife is soooo pregnant. I've been pregnant before so I can say that I would not have left the house, let alone have gone to the Oscars if I was that pregnant. I would just sit on my couch and watched the Oscars with ice cream. But to each her own. Perhaps it was the dress. The dress looked like a sling holding up her belly.
I thought I was the only one wondering about Bette Midler performing 'Wind Beneath My Wings." I grew up in the 80s, so I've heard just about enough of this song thank you. Why was Pink singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow?" What was happening?
I don't know why people are getting on Matthew about his speech and his religion. It's his personal belief system and if they don't want to believe that way then they don't have to.
Whew, this is a long comment.
People keep saying she is young so she can be immature, but that's just fucking insulting. I'm a year older than she is and I would never act like this around all those accomplished people. She is like some sort of circus monkey.
DeleteGiven how Gravity won so much more that night it just seems to me that they truly were afraid not to award 12YaS. If 12YaS swept, then sure, but it didn't.
It really looked like that! I wish she wore something different, the other pregnant ladies looked lovely.
I have no idea what the deal was with Midler and Pink. That was so insanely random to have them perform.
I think it's just a bunch of disappointed DiCaprio fanboys who thought their belief he will win will indeed bring him Oscar and now they lash out on people.
I came back to your site b/c I saw your 'Only Lovers Left Alive' review. Woot!!! Yes, JLaw is a bit too trailer park for me.
DeleteMy husband was saying the same thing about '12 Years.' He thinks it won b/c people were trying to be PC. I guess I just hope that's not the case, b/c my goodness 'Gravity' was one heck of a film. It would make so sad if '12 Years' won just b/c of that. IMO just being an Oscar nominated film for best pic means a lot.
I heard someone mention that Hemsworth's wife was pregnant w/ twins. If that's the case, then that explains why she's so huge. I just can honestly say that I wouldn't leave the house. I know that may sound backwards and old fashioned, but if I was that pregnant, my feet would be up, with a burrito in one hand and the remote in the other. Hemsworth would have been home w/ me. He wasn't nominated so why did he have to go?
I agree about the Leo fanboys. Leo will win one day people. He will. It just wasn't his year. I understand b/c Leo is a fantastic actor. He was great in 'Wolf of...' But Matt had a great year. It was probably the best year of his career. He probably won't have another year like that.
I think Hemsworth was there because 1. he was announcing the nominees and I think each year the person who does 2. gets to present (he was on stage with Theron) 3. he was in short mock movies Jimmy Kimmel had on his show after the oscars 4. the superhero theme was the theme this year and he is Thor :)
DeleteI hope Matt will have many years like that, he was still in that place where he had to wait for scripts and had trouble getting movies done but now that he has an Oscar I hope people will make it easier for him to find more amazing roles and movies :)
Great recap! I loved that Lupita won for supporting actress - I was ready to throw stuff on my television if Lawrence won that award. Most of the films had their awards locked, and despite Gravity not winning Best Picture, I think they went home big. Also, the last gif...AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteSame here, I kinda suspect they won't give Gravity BP win but I'm so happy it won so many awards, such a wonderful film.
DeleteI didn't watch it as usual so thanks for the all-encompassing round up. I'm guessing you're not a fan of that pic of JLaw 'stealing' the Oscar from Lupita. Love Lawrence but thank the higher powers that Lupita won!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso that last gif is pure genius.
Yeah, she felt this obsessive need of her to feed off some else's big moment.
DeleteThat last gif is fucking brilliant! :) poor Leo. Did you read the Vanity Fair article "explaining" why he never won and probably won't win an Oscar anytime soon? it makes sense, I guess http://www.vanityfair.com/vf-hollywood/leonardo-dicaprio-oscar
ReplyDeleteEven though I am not actively blogging about film anymore, I still follow your blog and it's amazing, you're getting better and better.
You live in Europe? where exactly, I always thought you were in the US :)
Diana (aka Aziza's Picks)
I glanced at it, it just seems to me each time there is an Oscar buzz around him, except for Aviator, it's fan generated.
DeleteThanks so much! I like to think all bloggers are the same, we all love film and that unites us, so I don't pay attention to things like that.
Nyong'o and Leto's speeches were truly awesome!
ReplyDeleteGreat writeup.
Thanks! Loved their speeches.
DeleteLoved your write up! There were no surprises with the winners and I thought all of their speeches were lovely. I thought it was ballsy for MM to mention God and JL to mention both the Ukraine and Venezuela. That being said, if I age as well as Jared Leto's Mom, I would be a happy camper. That is one stunning woman.
ReplyDeleteLupita is so adorable. I wasn't loving her dress at the Oscars, but she's been so flawless on the red carpet this season, I give her pass. She really looked like she was having a great time there and her joy is contagious.
On to Mrs. Hemsworth, she's pregnant with twins. I have twins...there comes a point in the pregnancy where you just get big, I don't care how great your pre-pregnancy shape is. That dress was not flattering on her and considering who she is, a designer a definitely could have made her look stunning. Granted both Olivia Wilde and Kerry Washington are pregnant with one but I thought they looked really good. But I have to give her credit, she had to approve the dress and she had the confidence to wear it. During my pregnancy you wouldn't have found me without sweatpants, Birkenstocks and a slab of Velveeta cheese. And I certainly would have stayed home.
Jared's mom really looks amazing, they seem to have very good genes in this family.
DeleteKerry and Olivia both wore the dresses that would be flattering even if they were having triplets, honestly her dress makes her look really awful and it's so distracting - I don't think the dress would be fine even if she wasn't pregnant but the way it was there just made her look weird.
Great recap! That selfie is one of the best things to ever happen. Kevin & Brad seem to be having the most fun, just winging to whatever Ellen had planned. It was nice compared to everyone else who didn't really participate in anything.
ReplyDeleteLeo's time will come - it's great entertainment to watch everyone act bananas because he didn't win. There are plenty of deserving filmmakers who will never get the chance to be recognized by The Academy - I don't think losing the Oscar keeps him up at night.
Thanks! Yeah they are both such nice people, I was a bit surprised Matthew didn't rush in to help, but I think he was backstage during this part.
DeletePrecisely, the dude has tons of cash and great career, it amazes me people pity him.
Haha, love the last GIF.
ReplyDeleteSo happy that Lupita won. Her speech was so genuine, too. Really hope she has a long and fruitful career.
Me too, way too many actresses win Oscars and go on to star in crappy movies.
DeleteExcellent recap Sati! Love your choices of gifs. So many teary moments this year. I particularly loved Leto's speech as well. And who could ever forget the wickedly talented, one and only, Adele Dazeem.
ReplyDeleteADELE DAZEEM! Still laughing :)
DeleteGreat recap! Everytime Gravity won an award I kept thinking "Where's Clooney?", as they kept cutting to Bullock.
ReplyDeleteHaha, that last gif is brilliant!
I think he stayed in his house in Italy this Oscar season :) He probably hid there especially after MM flopped/
