The Best (and Worst) of 2018

By s. Sunday, February 24, 2019 , , , , , , , ,
Best Movie: Aquaman
(2. A Star is Born 3. First Reformed 4. A Simple Favor 5. The Favourite 6. Can You Ever Forgive Me? 7. Paddington 2 8. If Beale Street Could Talk 9. Annihilation 10. Mandy)

James Wan's visionary and epic movie is without doubt the most entertaining film of the year. Funny, spectacular and filled with so much heart, Aquaman gave us heroes to cheer for, villains to fear and new, magical places to travel to. And the scale of the third act alone is one of the grandest things ever depicted on screen. I already saw it three times and I simply cannot wait to see it again.

Best Actor: Bradley Cooper as Jackson Maine in A Star is Born
(2. Ethan Hawke, First Reformed 3. Tom Hardy, Venom 4. Christian Bale, Vice 5. Viggo Mortensen, Green Book)

Cooper's beautiful and haunting work as Jackson Maine is his best performance to date. We like him, we root for him, yet we all know that his story won't end happily. Cooper's incredible singing voice adds so much to the movie but it's his haunted aura that really sells him as the doomed singer. It's an unforgettable work and one that it will be very hard for him to top in the future.

Best Actress: Lady Gaga as Ally in A Star is Born
(2. Emma Stone, The Favourite 3. Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me? 4. Toni Collette, Hereditary 5. Saoirse Ronan, Mary Queen of Scots)

Lady Gaga gives it her all as Ally - her heart, her soul and her incredible voice. She is shy, she is lost, she is strong, she is passionate. Watching her is so compelling because Gaga make her Ally feel like an actual person, with all the imperfections. And the most amazing thing is that Gaga's acting actually matches the strength of her singing voice here.

Best Supporting Actor: Sam Elliott as Bobby Maine in A Star is Born
(2. Nicholas Hoult, The Favourite 3. Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me? 4. Mahershala Ali, Green Book 5. John Krasinski, A Quiet Place)

Sam Elliot's beautiful work as Bobby adds so much to the tragedy of the movie - we don't know Bobby that well but we know just enough - we know he was there for his brother while also dealing with his hard life. A bit of a father to him, a bit of a companion but always a bleeding heart since he knows he cannot rescue Jackson from the darkness within him, always ready to claim him for itself.

Best Supporting Actress: Blake Lively as Emily Nelson in A Simple Favor
(2. Olivia Colman, The Favourite 3. Elizabeth Debicki, Widows 4. Emily Blunt, A Quiet Place 5. Margot Robbie, Mary Queen of Scots)

Blake Lively bravura turn as wicked and cunning Emily is - along with Tom Hardy's work in Venom - the most entertaining performance of the year. Her Emily is chic, fun and very dangerous. I really hope we will see more of Lively in the films actually worthy of her talents. In this one she proved she can do it all - comedy, drama and thriller.

  1. Great list! I love seeing Nicholas Hoult so many times, his performance is so underrated in The Favourite. I'm glad to see Rupert Friend in A Simple Favor too because I laughed my ass off when he was on screen.

I knew Aquaman would be the big winner. :)

I actually forgot Cloverfield Paradox came out last year, it feels so long ago. My annoyance at Mute still burns strong though.

At this point, I'm so sick of Roma I should actually re-do my Worst list and slap that on there as well, but I can't do that. lol

    1. Friend was so damn funny in that! He is actually really great in all of the stuff I saw him in.

The awfulness of Paradox was very memorable for me :)

  3. Awesome list!!!! Do you keep track of all your picks throughout the year? This is amazingly detailed.

OH BCOOP. Even though it's all rigged, and I really shouldn't care about the Oscars, I'm gonna be so disappointed tonight...I constantly have Sam Elliot in my head saying WTF after seeing your gif. lol So much love for ASIB. I CAN'T EVEN. There's so many subtle details in that movie, I have to cut down my Jackson/Ally post so it's not as big as a book. lol

LMAO YES Steve "I have a beard now and I do what I want" Rogers

I was so surprised to see Rupert in A Simple Favor. I felt like he fell off the face of the planet.

I kind of got from the ending of The Wife that she might write her own story about her husband, even though she threatened Christian Slate...but maybe she's just going to write her own stories in general? IDK. :/ But yes, someone should've outted him instead of keeping up with the lie. I truly hate the flight attendant saying that she could tell they were in love. Give me a break. He was a misogynistic abusive piece of crap.

    1. Yes, I update the draft after every single movie I see :)

It would be so cool if BCoop somehow won tonight, ugh!

That whole movie was a damn mess :/

  6. Holy Cow! What an amazing list! So much fun. I love that you love First Reformed, Nicholas Hoult, A Quiet Place, and soooo many others. And I applaud anyone who sticks up for their movie. You putting Aquaman as your #1 was kinda like me doing it with M:I-Fallout. Hats off to ya!

  7. Your list is honestly the best most comprehensive one I've seen! It's like looking back through the movie year for the good and the bad. (Worrisome thought Scarlet's going to likely have a much bigger role in Endgame.)

Nice to see some love for Awkwafina and Annihilation along with Hardy and Holt all underrated.

And thanks for the Jason/bearded Steve gifs! Happy Monday indeed :)

  8. Oh dear I'm in the enternal dog poo thing because I paid to see Bohemian Rhapsody. How do I get out? Though that said this should apply to anyone who saw it. Even seeing it illegally, talking about the gives it attention. I don't think either it worse than the other. Either way you both saw it...

I think some award shows should take some of your categories.

    2. Suppose. But i might actually have respect for people if they stood by their principles and didnt see the film at all.

Lot's of people are rightfully disgusted by the accusations but if they'd met that outrage with action then id respect them. And writing a negative reviews of BR for lols isn't action.

      Delete
    3. What action is that? I streamed the movie for free, that's it. And let me tell you, if you paid for it neither me nor anyone should care about whether they have your respect.

Kindly take your hot takes from my comment section now.

  9. LONG LIVE THOR AND ROCKET!

I haven't seen Bohemian Rhapsody yet and I very likely never will because Singer disgusts me SO MUCH. Not to mention Malek.

I love this all so much and it is almost inspiring me to add a whole bunch of special categories to my own awards. It will depend on if I have the energy to do it I guess. Regular awards categories coming soon!

  10. Oh wow, this is an amazing list; very complex and well thought! Great job, thanks for putting it together, I know it must have taken a long time :)

Interesting that Blake Lively is Best Supporting Actres...damn, I need to see that movie, I haven't seen "A Simple Favour" yet. Also, I need/want to see First reformed and If Beale Street could talk.

Scarlett Johnason- Worst Actress? Interesting, again. I wouldn't say it was horrible, just bland.

Yay for all the love on Venom, definitely an underappreciated movie and performance by hottie Tom Hardy

Blad is the worst, though. She is playing this character so many people like in the comics and she looks utterly bored doing it

  11. No Bohemian Rhapsody in best editing? Have you lost your mind? That movie is masterfully edited lol

    Jokes aside, great list!

  12. Lots of fun categories here! Pleased to see Mandy and Beale Street included in best music. Listened to Kingdom of Atlantis and I can hear the Blade Runner influence you talked about. Sure, Olga's dance was disgusting and that’s why it’s the most memorable/original scene to me.
The first half of Burning I admit has its dull moments and could have been edited better, but the second half I love as became a gripping mystery/thriller.

    1. Oh disgusting doesn't mean bad :D Just means that those scenes I picked there were really hard to watch for me. So glad you also hear that Blade Runner influence there! I thought it was just me going insane but it's really there! Such a lovely track too

I liked Yeun in it but that's about it

  13. So much to take in, but holy shit give it up for Rachel McAdams in GAME NIGHT!!!! Yesssss, I loved her so much.

Obviously, the rest of this list is great, but I'm afraid we're done once you read my review of A Star is Born. Uhhhhhhh......yeah. That should be fun.

(I totally came around on Venom...it's stupid, but like, endearingly so)
