Scene of the Week - Se7en

By s. Monday, August 27, 2012 , ,
Searching for clues
directed by David Fincher

The scene: In a film as thrilling and suspenseful as this one the scene like this is like a peaceful, beautiful moment when we can take a breath - detective Somerset goes to library and searches for clues that may help him solve the case of brutal and unprecedented murders. He is making a list and photocopies to help up young detective Mills, whom we observe sitting at home, staring at the crime scene photos, trying to figure out the case on his own. The scene has beautiful "Air" by Johann Sebastian Bach playing in the background which only adds to the solemn atmosphere of it, as we watch Somerset walk though dusty library and then looking at horrific images in the books.

  1. Most people will cite Fight Club as their favourite Fincher film, while some will say The Social Network, but mine has always been Se7en.

Love this scene. Freeman says it perfectly: "All these books, a world of knowledge at your tips, and you play poker all night"

    1. Fight Club used to be my fav, but Se7en is indeed better, it's Fincher's masterpiece.

Freeman is just incredible in this movie, my favorite performance of his.

  4. JUST watched this movie. Loved this scene too.. Fincher captured it all brilliantly. For some reason, I could feel that I could even smell the books as Freeman walked through the library.. such a great setting and such a great scene. Made it all creepier without having to do anything.

  6. I don't think I can watch this movie again, so creepy and heartbreaking. This particular scene with the glorious 'Air' theme by Bach is fantastic. You're right that the quieter scene is often the most powerful. I quite like Pitt here and you know I'm generally not fond of him, but I do love Morgan Freeman in everything. Well done, as always!

  8. Now I want to watch this again. I don't know if I would say it's better than Fight Club but it's close real close. That's a great scene you broke down for this segment.
