Johnny Depp Appreciation

By s. Saturday, June 9, 2012
John Christopher Depp II
9 June 1963, Owensboro, Kentucky, USA

Today is Johnny Depp's 49th birthday. The guy is 49! The biological clock obviously stopped for him around 15 years ago as he looks the same as he did back then.

He is extremely talented, though in recent years his finest work was a cameo in "21 Jump Street". Like him or not, you know he is a living legend. He is wonderfully weird, he is so kind to his fans, he loves kids - one time he even dropped by nearby school in his Jack Sparrow costume - and I do not think I have ever seen him deliver weak performance. Even in The Tourist he managed to be quite funny.

I saw almost all of his movies and from his wonderful work in Don Juan De Marco through deliciously deranged CIA agent in Once Upon a Time in Mexico to his legendary work as Jack Sparrow, he is always enjoyable to watch. I know there are many movies out there he did like Astronaut's Wife that people don't like, but I actually enjoyed that one.

I didn't like his directorial debut - Brave which was one of the most boring movies I've seen and recent film he was in - Dark Shadows - but that one was not his fault. There are many celebrities out there that feel fake and phony but Depp is not one of them - I always tune in when he is on Letterman as the interviews with him are always fun to watch.

  • Adopted Goldeneye, the one-eyed Andalusian horse who played Gunpowder, Ichabod Crane's steed in Sleepy Hollow (1999), thereby saving him from the glue factory.

  • Is scared of clowns, spiders, ghosts.

5 favorite quotes:
  • "Anything I've done up till May 27th 1999 was kind of an illusion, existing without living. My daughter, the birth of my daughter, gave me life."
  • "I don't pretend to be captain weird. I just do what I do."
  • "If you catch me saying 'I am a serious actor,' I beg you to slap me"

  1. I still love Johnny Depp. I still think he's one of the best actors working today. Only if he and Tim Burton made better movies.

I still love him as Captain Jack Sparrow. Once I saw that first Pirates film, I realized only he could play that role. And he was my 2nd choice at the Oscars behind Bill Murray but both lost to that overrated ass-clown Sean Penn.

    1. Yeah, better movies or took a break for each other for some time.

Haha, I'd really love if he won, I think Penn deserved to win for Milk, but for Mystic River...not so much.

    2. But over Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler?

Hell no!!!! Penn should've won the Oscar back in '95 for Dead Man Walking.

    3. Oh he was wonderful in Dead Man Walking. Definetly better work than those two combined.

  2. What a coincidence, I was watching a few 80s TV series on Youtube and 21 Jump Street was one of them (highlight was a then unknown Brad Pitt sharing a scene with the already famous Johnny Depp) and the theme song is somehow stuck in my head. Didn't know it was his birthday.

I love Johnny. He is the epitome of cool. I haven't seen the recent 21 Jump Street movie but my favourite of his recent work was on a episode of the Ricky Gervais/Warwick Davis TV comedy, "Life's Too Short". His best work however are his earlier ones.

    1. Brad Pitt was in it too? Woah!

21JS is really funny and his cameo is the best part, you should check it out! I saw this episode, really funny, loved Depp pretending to be pissed off about Gervais's GG massacre :)

  3. This is a great post, so well planned out. Depp is a great actor, I'm looking forward to his future roles, his last great role for me was back in 2007 with Sweeney Todd, although I loved his cameo in 21 Jump Street.

I compared his and Portman's films in honour of their birthday also :D

  4. Oh Johnny Depp, the love of my childhood- I used to watch Cry Baby obsessively when I was little because he was so cute and the movie also had great music and was little (at least when I was young I thought so). I still think he is fantastic! Happy 49 mister Depp, we love you!

  5. Gotta love Depp. May have made some questionable decisions over his career but who hasn't? Love those quotes you found. He's a funny and cool guy with some great roles. To me he'll always be the dude that got sucked into his bed in Nightmare on Elm Street!

  6. He's great. I don't care if his movies are not that impressive nowadays than they were a decade or so ago. After all, my love to film began with Pirates of the Caribbean.

    1. The things he says are really great, there were a bunch of quotes I considered. He has fantastic sense of humour.

  8. Agree that he's still as good-looking as 15 years ago, but I think his style was a little more attractive then. I'm just not so into beards. But he looks great in the Dark Shadows trailer.

I haven't seen many of his essential films, but still love him, no matter how bad some of his recent films are.

  10. Really talented actor but I wish he wasn't wasting his time with Tim Burton. He really isn't choosing the best movies to star in these days...

  11. He's done some fantastic work in the past just wish he'd make some better choices these days. Out of his recent work, Capt. Jack is probably my favourite stuff. Though for me, he'll always be Edward Scissorhands. Probably my all time favourite role of his.

    1. He's just the cutest as Edward! I really hope he will start choosing some more interesting, ambitious projects, he is too good to repeat his work over and over again.

  12. I LOVE those icon drawings of his movie roles!!

Depp is one gorgeous man, and yeah you're right that this guy stopped aging from 15 years ago. And the fact that he smokes and drinks just amazed me, how does he stay soooo young??! He hasn't changed much since 21 Jump Street!

I think my favorite role of his is Chocolat, and though I hated the movie, he's quite funny in The Tourist, I do agree.

    1. Yeah, I found them on tumblr and just had to include them, so cool!

I know! Robert Downey Jr is another one that looks pretty young for his age, considering what he put his body through.

I love Chocolat, such a lovely movie and fun performance from Depp!
